Fighting in Hockey

Fighting is what killed the NHL on USA television. Heck, even senior bowling got higher ratings than the Stanley Cup Championship.

In my years of watching NHL (which, thankfully, I don't do anymore) I've seen a player get killed, another have his eye gouged out, several rendered unconscious by sticks or by fists, two stabbed in the face or forehead by skates, several riots, and many deliberately caused injuries!

If you want to call that 'sport', help yourself. I call it pathetic as do most Yanks nowadays.

Yeah, Yanks find shooting children in Iraq a much more exhilarating sport.

I'm not surprised Americans don't have the stones for a real mans game.

Someone brought up baseball. Baseball has brawls. Hockey no longer has any brawls. Can someone justify why there could ever be a fight in a baseball game? Plus, the game is the biggest money maker in sports..senseless fights over nothing included.

The skill is higher then when? Like the 80's when it was regular for players to score 140+ points per season? You have a pretty short memory span when it comes to skill in this league, Tallola.

My memory is very sharp and accurate.
Goalies are twice as talented than they were then. Almost all of the goalies
in the nhl today are well trained in the butterfly style, much 'bigger' than years
ago. John Garrett wouldn't get past bantam today, way too small.
Skaters are far better, defencemen far better, much harder to break into
the scoring area, teams have to play as teams much more now, not many
solo heros, the defence is far too good to dipsy doodle around them, happens
sometimes but not much.
coaching is much better, all the videos they study, coaches for each position,
players have good coaching from kids now.
players are athletes now, those who would choose to sit around having a beer
and eating junk, or smoking, won't ever be there, diet and fitness is high
priority in the league.
Look what they did with welwood. The canucks staff made up his meals every
day from training camp, and all he had to do was heat them up, he was on a
very strict training program, as he was so out of shape, now he's doing fine,
but never would have made the team, if he hadn't obeyed instructions, his
strength and weight were checked constantly until he came up to expectations.

Sure there were good players before, but they were undertrained, and undertaught, and not as much discipline, and it was so much easier to score
on the goalies they had then.

Sure it was easier to score "then." Goalies did not wear equipment "then" which was wider than the net!

Alexander Ovechkin managed to score 60 some odd goals last years, I assume all the goals were against goalies with 80's equipment on?

The goalies 'themselves' are way bigger than back then, and last season the
equipment was cut back, it is quite noticeable.
Ken Dryden was considered a big goalie back in his day, and he was better than
average in skills, but today he would not be good enough with the style he used then, and not considered really
big, just average.

I agree that fighting should not be a part of a minor hockey, developing skill and having fun should be the first business of order. I personally don't care for the fighting at the NHL level, it's rather boring but it is part of the game. There needs to be a response when you have agitators & dirty players talking cheap shots at your best players.

That's what penalties are for.

John Garrett was a good goaltender, one of a few Canuck goaltenders of that time with a winning record. Good goaltenders have a certain, instinctive talent that can overcome shortcomings like size.

If fighting, and perhaps even hard hitting, were taken from hockey, you would get something akin to the All Star Game. Which I find totally boring. Goal, goal, goal, goal. It is nice that they have an avenue in which to showcase their talent, but it is certainly no fun for the goalies, and I would prefer a nice close game rather than a 20-15 score.

Like I said before, fighting has a place in hockey, but it cannot be dirty. Hitting should never go either as long as it is clean.

Apart from fighting and feigning, what are the prospects of the Senators?

I advocate that defensemen should be allowed to wear brass knuckles in the second period.

LISTEN to the ROAR of that crowd. Face it... the NHL will never be that big in the USA. It will be the #4 sport and that still is pretty good.

People love the fighting. I have been to many Bruins games and never have I seen a guy stand up and say...

"KNOCK IT OFF!"

...while a fight is going on.

The NHL does well in most of the northern states...

Are Bruins tickets hard to come by?
