DALORI, Nigeria -- A survivor hidden in a tree says he watched Boko Haram extremists firebomb huts and heard the screams of children burning to death, among 86 people officials say died in the latest attack by Nigeria's homegrown Islamic extremists.
Scores of charred corpses and bodies with bullet wounds littered the streets from Saturday night's attack on Dalori village and two nearby camps housing 25,000 refugees, according to survivors and soldiers at the scene just 5 kilometres (3 miles) from Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram and the biggest city in Nigeria's northeast.
The shooting, burning and explosions from three suicide bombers continued for nearly four hours in the unprotected area, survivor Alamin Bakura said, weeping on a telephone call to The Associated Press. He said several of his family members were killed or wounded.
The violence continued as three female suicide bombers blew up among people who managed to flee to neighbouring Gamori village, killing many people, according to a soldier at the scene who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to journalists.
Troops arrived at Dalori around 8:40 p.m. Saturday but were unable to overcome the attackers, who were better armed, said soldiers who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press. The Boko Haram fighters only retreated after reinforcements arrived with heavier weapons, they said.
Journalists visited the carnage Sunday and spoke to survivors who complained it had taken too long for help to arrive from nearby Maiduguri, the military headquarters of the fight to curb Boko Haram. They said they fear another attack.
Eighty-six bodies were collected by Sunday afternoon, according to Mohammed Kanar, area co-ordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency. Another 62 people are being treated for burns, said Abba Musa of the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri.
Boko Haram has been attacking soft targets, increasingly with suicide bombers, since the military last year drove them out of towns and villages in northeastern Nigeria.
The 6-year Islamic uprising has killed about 20,000 people and driven 2.5 million from their homes.

LOL My word but I am fed up with people behaving in the most despicable ways because of some book written by self proclaimed prophets. . In my opinion, these texts are not "holy" but an excuse to condone control, prejudice and ethically poor behavior in the name a supreme being which has given not an iota of proof it even exists!!

Taking delight in trying to enforce such beliefs on others in some other holy texts brings about pay back if not now then in the after life if it exists or in reincarnation if it doesn't. In case there are neither of these but simply non-existence, in my opinion is a very poor way to have spent the one and only chance at life.

MOORE, Okla. - An Oklahoma man accused of beheading a coworker in 2014 and attacking another had a not guilty plea entered on his behalf at an arraignment on Thursday to charges that include first-degree murder.
Alton Nolen, 31, is accused of stabbing and beheading 54-year-old Colleen Hufford in September 2014 during an attack at Vaughan Foods in Moore, south of Oklahoma City. Prosecutors have said they are seeking the death penalty.
Nolen did not speak at the hearing. He had tried to enter a guilty plea but the judge refused and court records show that a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.
Prosecutors have said Nolen was suspended from his job at Vaughan Foods when he walked into the company's administrative office and attacked Hufford, severing her head. He also stabbed another co-worker before he was shot by Vaughan Foods Chief Operating Officer Mark Vaughan, they said.
In October 2015, a Cleveland County judge rejected claims that Nolen was mentally impaired and declared him competent to stand trial.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been examining Nolen's background for any potential religious ties to the attack after former colleagues said he had tried to convert them to Islam.

I wouldn't convert to your religion for anything nor could I ever believe in your god or allah or whomever that expresses nothing but hate. I would be embarrassed to be a party to a religion that calls for so much hate. Hate is evil and those who express evil aren't people I want to be associated with - period!!

Just looking for a principle here. Ordinarily, we go to war with countries. You want to go to war with a religion. So what exactly does that mean? I work with several Muslims. I like most of them. Should they be killed, rounded up in concentration camps, deported (if so, to where? Some of them were born in the U.S.)?

NEW DELHI -- A man in western India fatally stabbed 14 members of his family, including seven children, early Sunday before hanging himself, police said.
Hasnain Warekar, 35, went on his overnight killing spree following a Saturday evening family gathering at his home, said Gajanan Laxman Kabdule, a spokesman for the police in the city of Thane, located outside of Mumbai. He said a motive was not known.
Warekar's extended family -- three sisters, their children and his parents -- were among those who apparently had gotten together for dinner, Kabdule said. Warekar's wife and two young daughters were also in the house and were among those killed.
The only survivor of the attack was a sister who was wounded, the officer said, adding that she was in a hospital and in "a state of shock."
Kabdule said that it appeared that Warekar began his stabbing spree between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., after everyone had gone to bed.
The victims' bodies were discovered early Sunday morning.
Kabdule said the reason for the killings was not immediately clear. The Press Trust of India news agency reported that a family dispute over property was behind the attacks.
The bodies were sent to a Thane hospital for autopsies.

MOSCOW - Russian police wrestled to the ground a woman in a hijab brandishing the severed head of a child outside a Moscow metro station on Monday and charged her with murder, in an incident that stirred fears of an Islamist terrorist attack.
The macabre episode was caught on camera by passers-by, with footage showing the unnamed woman in a black hijab wandering around in the street holding an infant's severed head high in the air.
"I am a terrorist, I want your death," she can be heard screaming in heavily accented Russian in a rambling tirade in which she appears to criticize democracy and talk about the end of the world.
Warning: The below video contains graphic content.
Investigators said they thought the woman had been working as a nanny for a Moscow family and had murdered a child in her care before setting fire to the family's flat and fleeing.
The child was three or four years old, they said.
"Given the clearly deranged behaviour of the detainee, investigators swiftly ordered her to undergo psychiatric tests to establish whether she is capable of understanding the significance of her actions," Moscow's investigative committee said in a statement.
News agencies cited an unnamed police source as saying the woman appeared to have been under the influence of psychotropic drugs.
Immigration authorities told media the woman was from the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan and had been working in Moscow illegally.
TERROR FEARS
With frequent warnings from government officials about the danger that Islamic State militants pose to Russia and a long history of terrorist attacks in Moscow, some onlookers thought they were witnessing an act of terror.
One eyewitness, a reporter from the RBC.ru news portal, said she heard the woman screaming "Allahu Akbar" (Islamic phrase meaning God is Great or Allah is Greater).
"I was on my way to the metro station from home," Polina Nikolskaya, the reporter, told Reuters.
"She was standing near the metro entrance and caught my attention because she was screaming Allahu Akbar. I saw that she had a bloodied head in her arms, but I thought it was not real. People in the crowd said it was real."
Lifenews.ru, an online news portal with close contacts to the police, said a policeman had first approached the woman to check her documents near the Oktyabrskoye Pole metro station in the north-west of the Russian capital.
The woman had responded by removing the child's head from a bag and shouting that she had killed the infant, it said, saying she had also threatened to blow herself up.
Footage of the incident showed a policeman wrestling the woman to the ground before a group of colleagues helped restrain her.
Some rights activists warned of a possible backlash against migrant workers from Central Asia who have in the past been targeted for beatings by far-right groups.
Security services are on high alert for a possible terrorist attack after a Russian passenger plane was blown out of the sky above Egypt in October, killing all 224 people onboard. Islamic State said it was responsible and had acted to avenge the Kremlin's decision to launch air strikes in Syria.

MOSCOW -- None of the main Russian television channels carried reports about the arrest of a nanny accused of killing a 4-year-old girl and then waving the child's severed head outside a Moscow subway station, even though videos posted online had caused a sensation among Russians throughout the day.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman on Tuesday denied that the news was withheld at the request of the Kremlin or out of concerns that the killing could stoke ethnic tensions in a country with many Muslim citizens and migrant workers.
The suspect is a 38-year-old woman from Uzbekistan. Her religion was not known, but she wore a head covering and some witnesses said she shouted "Allahu akbar" while waving the bloody head on the street on Monday morning. In videos posted on Russian news websites, she was heard shouting "I am a terrorist" in Russian.
Investigators said the woman, who was the child's nanny, appeared to be mentally unstable.
Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the television stations made the decision themselves not to air the videos, which he described as "too horrific to show on television."
Most of the TV channels carried reports on their websites and major Russian newspapers also reported the details of the killing, but television is the primary source of news for the majority of Russians across the country.
In memory of the little girl who was killed, Muscovites placed flowers and children's toys outside the subway station Tuesday.
Russian children's rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov responded to the killing by urging parents to ask prospective nannies to provide a doctor's certificate confirming their mental health.

KABUL - Afghan women and girls accused of so-called moral crimes are often forced to endure invasive and scientifically questionable "virginity tests" by government doctors, according to human rights advocates.
Improving the lives and rights of women remains a major challenge in Afghanistan nearly 15 years after a U.S.-backed military campaign ousted the Taliban's hardline Islamist regime.
Of 53 woman and girls interviewed in a dozen provinces across Afghanistan, 48 said they had been subject to compulsory gynecological exams by government officials after being accused of adultery or escaping from home, investigators for Afghanistan's Independent Human Rights Commision found in a study conducted last year.
The study's findings were publicized by Human Rights Watch on Monday.
"Since gynecological tests are conducted without consent of the victim, it can be considered sexual harassment and human rights violation," the commission concluded, noting that the tests violate the spirit of the Afghan constitution as well as international principles.
In most cases the tests, which can include invasive genital as well as **** exams, are carried out in the presence of male guards and others, and often amount to "torture" with "horrible effects and consequences," the report found.
The tests claim to verify whether a woman has been sexually active outside of marriage, but the veracity of the exams has been widely debunked by scientists.
The report said the tests lacked a scientific basis.
Girls as young as 13 were among those who reported being forced to endure the tests, and a number of the women were accused merely of leaving their homes without permission, which is not a crime under Afghan law. More than a third of the women reported being examined more than once.
In a conservative culture where great value is attached to a woman's virginity, the "aggressive" exams can damage a woman's personal dignity, emotional health, and social status, the report warned.
In some cases, women unable to prove they were virgins on their wedding day have faced violence, and some have been killed, the commission said.
"The continued use of degrading and unscientific 'virginity exams' by the Afghan government is part of a broader pattern of abuses in which women and girls in Afghanistan are jailed on spurious 'moral crimes' accusations," Human Rights Watch senior researcher Heather Barr said in a statement.
She joined the Human Rights Commission in calling for the government to explicitly ban such tests and to end arrests of women accused of trying to leave their homes.

Osama bin Laden was paranoid one of his wives might have been implanted with a tracking device when she went to the dentist.
In one letter released Tuesday, bin Laden worried a trip to an Iranian dentist provided an opportunity to implant a small chip under her skin.
"My dear wife," he began. "I was told that you went to a dentist in Iran, and you were concerned about a filling she put in for you. Please let me know in detail ... any suspicions that any of the brothers may have about chips planted in any way."
The Iranian dentist might have used a slightly enlarged syringe to make such an implant, bin Laden wrote in the letter. The U.S. translation is undated.
"The size of the chip is about the length of a grain of wheat and the width of a fine piece of vermicelli," bin Laden said. He asked her to recall the exact date of her dental work, "also about any surgery you had, even if it was only a quick pinch."

MOSCOW - A woman suspected of beheading a child in her care before brandishing the severed head outside a Moscow metro station said on Wednesday Allah had ordered her to commit the crime.
Police on Monday wrestled to the ground Gulchekhra Bobokulova, a 38-year-old divorced mother of three from the Muslim-majority ex-Soviet state of Uzbekistan, after she wandered around a Moscow street holding the infant's severed head in the air and shouting Islamist slogans.
Eyewitnesses said at the time they believed she was carrying out a terrorist act, but since her detention, Russian investigators have raised the possibility she might be suffering from mental illness.
Investigators said she had been working as a nanny for a Moscow family and that she had murdered and beheaded one of the children in her care before setting fire to the family flat and fleeing.
State television channels did not report the incident, a move that drew accusations of censorship from some opposition activists but which the Kremlin endorsed, saying it would have been wrong to broadcast such "horrific images".
Bobokulova told reporters on her way into the courtroom on Wednesday that Allah had ordered her to do what she did but that she had repented and agreed with her arrest.
Sat in the metal cage reserved for defendants in Russian courts, Bobokulova waved and said:
"I am Allah's messenger. Hello everyone."
Her head was uncovered and she appeared relaxed, occasionally yawning, in contrast to Monday when she had been dressed in black and wearing a hijab.
MILITANT ISLAMIST THREAT
Government officials have issued frequent warnings about the danger that Islamic State militants pose to Russia, especially in the light of Russia's military intervention in Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad.
Investigators have opened a criminal case against Bobokulova, saying they formally suspect her of murder. They have not mentioned suspecting her of any terrorism-related offence.
The court agreed to detain her for two months while the investigation continued after hearing that she presented an "exceptional risk to public safety."
Investigators have said she will undergo psychiatric testing.

MOSCOW -- A nanny accused of decapitating a four-year-old girl and brandishing her head outside a Moscow subway station said during an apparent interrogation captured on video that the killing was an act of revenge against President Vladimir Putin for Russian airstrikes in Syria.
Asked about the video, which was released Thursday, Putin's spokesman said it was difficult to judge the testimony of a woman he called "clearly deranged."
Gulchekhra Bobokulova, 38, was detained in Moscow on Monday after the child in her care was killed. Video footage posted online Thursday appeared to show police interrogating her. It was not clear where the video originated, and The Associated Press could not verify its authenticity or the circumstances in which it was taken. She appeared to be wearing the same clothes she wore during a court appearance on Wednesday.
In the video, she says the killing of the child was done in revenge. Asked who it was revenge against, she says "the one who has spilled the blood." Asked who that was, she replies: "Who spilled it? Putin has been dropping bombs."
Russia has been carrying out airstrikes in Syria for five months to support Syrian President Bashar Assad's offensive against rebels. Russian officials have flatly denied numerous reports by international aid groups that accuse it of killing not only Islamic State fighters but also Syrian civilians.
The Investigative Committee, Russia's top investigative agency, would not confirm or deny the authenticity of the video, but spokesman Vladimir Markin warned that Bobokulova's words should be treated with caution.
"The motive for a crime committed by a person who was diagnosed with schizophrenia often does not coincide with the explanations that they give later," he said, adding that investigators will look into all possible theories.
Russian officials seem to be sending mixed messages about the suspect, focusing on her mental record but also suggesting that she probably did not act alone. Prosecutors told the court Wednesday that individuals who may have "incited" Bobokulova to kill the child may still be at large.
Russian media have reported that Bobokulova, originally from the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan, was first diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2003. She has not yet undergone a psychiatric examination in Russia.
Markin rejected reports that Russian investigators found phone numbers of Islamic extremists in Bobokulova's contacts.
In the video, she tells investigators she reads the Qur'an and prays day and night but that they can go kill her three children in Uzbekistan, who don't read the Qur'an.
Peskov, Putin's spokesman, said it would be wrong to draw conclusions from the video.
"It appears obvious to me -- although I may be wrong, I'm not an expert or judge -- that we are evidently talking about a woman who is clearly deranged," he said.
Russian state television has not covered the murder. As social media users scramble to get information about the grisly death, Russian opposition figures have accused the Kremlin of gagging the press in order to prevent a legitimate discussion about migrant workers in Russia.
Nationalist politicians have for years campaigned to impose visas on citizens of Central Asian nations who make up the most of Russia's migrant worker population, citing crime rates and the scarcity of jobs for Russians. Government officials have acknowledged the problem of undocumented migrants but have said imposing visas on Central Asians would cost Russia its influence in this strategic region.
"She entered Russia without work permit," opposition politician Vladimir Milov tweeted on Thursday. "This would not have happened with the visa regime in place. The child would be alive."
Opposition leader Alexei Navalny said in a blog post Thursday that the Muslim community should be more proactive in fighting Islamic extremism.
"The spreading of such a half-deranged religious extremism is clearly a problem of the Muslim religious community," he said. "If a person goes mad because of personal or medical issues and has decided to turn to religion, it is the task of the community (not the government or entire society) to make sure she meets the people who could help her deal with this crisis in the head."
