When it comes to agriculture, the World Food Prize is the equivalent of the Oscars.

This year, the prestigious award went the mastermind behind Monsanto’s big move into genetically modified crops. In foodie terms, that is like a commercial blockbuster winning best picture rather than an independent, artsy film.

Started in 1987, the prize aims to recognize people who improve the “quality, quantity or availability” of food in the world. The founder of the award, Norman E. Borlaug, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 as the father of the Green Revolution, which vastly increased grain

output.

On Wednesday the World Food Prize Foundation said the honor and the $250,000 cash prize would be shared by Robert T. Fraley, Monsanto’s executive vice president and chief technology officer, and two other scientists, Marc Van Montagu of Belgium and Mary-Dell Chilton of the United States. The foundation said the work of the three scientists, who helped devise a way to insert foreign genes into plants, led to the development of higher-yielding crops that can resist insects, disease and extremes of climate.

Well deserved. Good for them. Nothing more important than growing food.

Frankenfoods. Great! Words can't describe my disgust. It is like giving Dr. Mengle the Nobel Prize for inventing human tatoo skin lamp shades. Monsanto is a criminal organization of the worst kind.

Godwin's law strikes early in this thread. You go right ahead and continue with your hunting and gathering because if you buy anything processed from the grocery store it for sure has some GMO in it.

As I said before cliffy. I'll set you up with a quarter of land, you grow your way and I'll grow mine and we'll see who has the better product and who will survive to farm another year.

Are you up for the challenge?

You would have to insist on growing food items or at least legal ones ;-)

Ghost and UFO sightings take giant leaps every fall during harvest.

I've heard plenty of stories from the old guys that usually start out
"One year while harvesting rye I saw...

Thank goodness I have a HEPA system on the combine.

So the World Food Prize is an industry circle jerk and not a reliable judge of quality and achievement?
What is lacking quality?

What is lacking quality?

Anything Monsanto has their label on.
