the park is near the city, as far as i can tell, and they're recommending the city folk kill all the squirrels to stop them getting into the park

Are they seriously recommending random city dwellers to kill the squirrels? they were quoted as suggesting this? Or are they asking professionals to come in and do the deed?

Killing them is indeed the answer, but by professionals... not every joe blow with a couple of bricks and a blow torch.

or hedge trimmers?

or a pair of sturdy boots?

Phil, do you have a pet duck?

Not anymore... It was euthanized by a Fox.

I had tried, on several occasions (sp?), to put it down quietly with the business end of a shovel, but to no avail.

and this shall be the last we speak of it.

I'm sure that the company that sells those traps believe it's the humane way to trap and kill them. But all you have to do to find out for sure is to look at the pictures on the internet of what suffering the animal goes through when the animal does not hit the trap just right.

Personally I'd only recommend those traps on poachers.

the advice given out is that anyone with greys in their garden should trap and kill them

Northern Ontario,
My Dad taught me when I was a young pup not to kill any animal unless it was a pest or for food....To me all squirrels grey, black or red are pests, and the fact that they taste good is a bonus.....

Two years ago some squirrels build a nest on top of my truck engine right in front of the distributor pump, causing the fuel pump monitor to overheat which cost me $550 to replace....lucky that gave out before the pump....that would have cost me $2000 with labour.....believe me they are pests.:angryfire:

You should see what I do to crows that make a mess of garbage bags at the curb......All the neighbours have a problem with that.....not me......It's true what they say....that crows and ravens have a good memory...for survival.;-)

Ok, I bite...what do you do with crows?

We actually don't have any squirrels here. We have everything else under the sun, including wild turkeys...but not squirrels.

I can't do it with ravens because the are protected, I've learned over the years, that crows and ravens have about a seven year memory or cycle...so every six or seven years I shoot one with 22BBCaps...No noise...I don't let the garbage people pick it up....the rest of them are mad as h_ell the rest of the day in the surrounding trees......but they leave my garbage alone for six to seven years while they play havock with the neighbour's

Oh DaS...what can I possibly say to that?

I know I shouldn't laugh, but I can just see you out there with your Red Ryder in hand. Personally, I can't tell the difference between crows and ravens and I didn't know they lived that long, anyway.

Hmmm, is a Red Ryder a wagon or a gun? Oh well, you know what I mean.

Raven's (and crows) are amazing birds! They fashion and use tools. I watched documentary that showed a raven rolling down a hill covered in snow, he then got up, walked back up the hill and rolled down again! He did it several times. He was playing... AMAZING!

Ravens have shaggy throat feathers and heavier bills than crows. Illustration by Giovanni Maki.

Yup. That's why I cringe when I hear people talking about killing an animal bacause it's "just a pest".

Guess what, YOU are not the center of the universe, and by YOUR definition, YOU ARE THE WORST OF PESTS!

(not YOU Twila, I mean pest people  )
