COPENHAGEN — Danes expressed shock and disbelief on Wednesday over U.S. President Donald Trump’s cancellation of a state visit to Denmark after its prime minister rebuffed his interest in purchasing Greenland.
Trump’s proposal at first elicited incredulity and humor from politicians in Denmark, a NATO ally of the United States, with former premier Lars Lokke Rasmussen saying: “It must be an April Fool’s Day joke.”
But the mood turned to shock when Trump called off the Sept. 2-3 visit after Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called his idea of the United States buying Greenland, an autononomus Danish territory, “absurd.”
“Total chaos with @realDonaldTrump and cancellation of state visit to Denmark. It has gone from a big opportunity for strengthened dialog between allies to a diplomatic crisis,” former foreign minister Kristian Jensen, a member of the opposition Liberal Party, said on Twitter.
“Everyone should know Greenland is not for sale,” Jensen said of the world’s largest island, which has considerable mineral wealth and a U.S. military presence at the Thule Air Base under a U.S.-Danish treaty dating to 1951.
Frederiksen, who had been due to hold talks with Trump in Copenhagen, was unavailable for a comment as she was traveling after a visit to Greenland and Iceland earlier this week.
She said earlier this week Greenland was “not for sale” and she hoped Trump’s proposal was “not meant seriously.”
“SHOCKING”
“It is very, very shocking, when it is about a very close ally and a good friend,” Soren Espersen, the foreign affairs spokesman for the hard right Danish People’s Party, told Danish news agency Ritzau.
He described Trump’s cancellation as an offence to Queen Margrethe, Denmark’s head of state, and that he did not expect another visit by the U.S. president would happen.
Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were formally invited to Denmark by Queen Margrethe in July.
“It shows why we now more than ever should consider (fellow) European Union countries as our closest allies. The man is unpredictable,” said Morten Ostergaard, leader of the Danish Social Liberal Party. “Reality surpasses imagination.”
Trump, whose “America First” policies have resulted in strained relations with the EU over trade and other issues, said on Sunday that a U.S. purchase of Greenland would be “a large real estate deal,” though not an immediate priority.
“Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time,” Trump tweeted on Tuesday.
Greenland, which is gaining attention from world powers including China, Russia and the United States due to its strategic location and mineral resources, is self-governing but depends on Denmark for economic support.
Aaja Chemnitz Larsen, a lawmaker from Greenland’s opposition party Inuit Ataqatigiit party, said she was not surprised at the cancellation but it underlined the territory’s importance.
“The U.S. is an interesting ally for Greenland, but we also wish for Greenland to remain in the union we have today,” she told Reuters.

WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that his administration was seriously looking at ending the right of citizenship for U.S.-born children of noncitizens and people who immigrated to the United States illegally.
“We’re looking at that very seriously, birthright citizenship, where you have a baby on our land, you walk over the border, have a baby – congratulations, the baby is now a U.S. citizen. … It’s frankly ridiculous,” Trump told reporters outside the White House.
Trump has made cracking down on immigration a central plank of his presidency and re-election campaign, but many of the administration’s sweeping rule changes and executive orders have been stymied by the courts.
The Republican president had told Axios news website in October 2018 that he would end “birthright citizenship” through an executive order.
Experts have said such a move would run afoul of the U.S. Constitution.

The Constitution’s 14th Amendment, passed after the Civil War to ensure that black Americans had full citizenship rights, granted citizenship to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States.”
It has since routinely been interpreted to grant citizenship to most people born in the United States, whether or not their parents are American citizens or legally living in the United States.

'GREAT AGAIN': Florida man charged for stash of Trump-shaped ecstasy

A Florida man who was found to have ecstasy pills shaped like U.S. President Donald Trump’s head has been charged with unlawful possession of controlled substances, according Pinellas County court documents.
Brendan Dolan-King, 23, was charged on Friday in Clearwater, Florida after police searched his apartment in June and discovered fentanyl and five orange pills shaped like Trump’s head, which were later found to contain the hallucinogen MDMA, or ecstasy.
The confiscation resembles one in Indiana in 2018, when the Lafayette Courier-Journal reported that police patrolling an interstate highway seized an orange tablet in the shape of the 45th U.S. president’s head, with his lips puckered on the front and “Great Again” printed on the back.
As many as 5,000 such pills were seized in Germany in 2017, NBC News reported.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is challenging a federal appeals court decision that ruled he violated the U.S. Constitution by blocking people whose views he disliked from his Twitter account.
In court papers filed late Friday by the U.S. Justice Department, Trump sought a rehearing by the full 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York, calling the 3-0 decision “fundamentally misconceived.”
Trump has more than 63 million followers on Twitter, and often uses his account to make significant announcements, including Friday when his tweets about trade with China sent U.S. stock and oil prices down sharply.
The three-judge panel last month upheld a May 2018 lower court ruling that forced Trump to unblock several dozen followers.
Twitter Inc and the White House did not immediately comment.

In the appellate court ruling, Circuit Judge Barrington Parker wrote, “the First Amendment does not permit a public official who utilizes a social media account for all manner of official purposes to exclude persons from an otherwise-open online dialog because they expressed views with which the official disagrees.”
White House social media director Dan Scavino, who was also a defendant, is also challenging the appeals court ruling.
The Justice Department court filing on Friday warned that if the appeals court ruling was upheld, that “public officials who address matters relating to their public office on personal accounts will run the risk that every action taken on that account will be state action subject to constitutional scrutiny.”
Parker, however, had said Trump’s account bears “all the trappings of an official, state-run account” and is “one of the White House’s main vehicles for conducting official business.”
Trump has made his @RealDonaldTrump account, which he opened in 2009, a central and controversial part of his presidency, using it to promote his agenda and attack critics.
His blocking of critics was challenged by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, as well as seven Twitter users he had blocked.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Justice Department has decided not to prosecute former FBI Director James Comey despite an internal investigation that found he improperly leaked information to the news media, the department’s internal watchdog said on Thursday.
The Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General said Comey asked a friend to share the contents of a memo with the New York Times to pressure the department to launch an independent investigation into his conversations with President Donald Trump.
In the memo, Comey described a meeting in which Trump allegedly asked him to drop the FBI’s investigation into Michael Flynn, who at the time was his national security adviser. Flynn has since pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his conversations with Russian officials.
Comey signed off on an investigation into the Trump campaign’s possible ties to Russia during the 2016 election and later emerged as a prominent critic of the president after Trump fired him in May 2017. Trump and many of his allies say that investigation should never have begun.

The Justice Department appointed a special counsel, Robert Mueller, to handle the investigation after Comey left. That probe unearthed numerous contacts between the campaign and Russian officials but concluded that there was not enough evidence to establish a criminal conspiracy.
Mueller’s final report did not reach a conclusion as to whether Trump’s efforts to interfere with the probe amounted to criminal obstruction of justice, but it also did not exonerate the president. Attorney General William Barr concluded that he did not see enough evidence to bring obstruction charges.
The Inspector General said on Thursday that while Comey’s memo did not contain classified material, he set a dangerous example when he shared sensitive information to create public pressure for official action.
“Were current or former FBI employees to follow the former Director’s example and disclose sensitive information in service of their own strongly held personal convictions, the FBI would be unable to dispatch its law enforcement duties properly,” the report said.
Comey said on Twitter that people who have accused him of sharing classified information should apologize.
“To all those who’ve spent two years talking about me ‘going to jail’ or being a ‘liar and a leaker’—ask yourselves why you still trust people who gave you bad info for so long, including the president,” he said.

It is the second time Comey has been criticized by the Inspector General’s office, which concluded last year that he made a “serious error of judgment” when he announced shortly before the 2016 election that he was re-opening an investigation into Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s use of a private e-mail server when she was secretary of State.
Trump said on Thursday: “Perhaps never in the history of our Country has someone been more thoroughly disgraced and excoriated than James Comey in the just released Inspector General’s Report. He should be ashamed of himself!”

White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham called Comey a “liar and a leaker” and said his decision to share information with the press led to a “baseless, politically motivated, two-year witch hunt.”

Comey wrote seven memos during the first few months of Trump’s presidency, detailing one-on-one meetings in which Comey says Trump demanded loyalty and tried to influence the actions of the FBI, which is supposed to enforce the law in an impartial manner.
The Inspector General’s report said Comey should not have held on to the memos after he was fired because they were official FBI documents. Comey gave one of them to his friend Dan Richman and told him to share it with a New York Times reporter, according to the report. Richman declined to comment.
Congress made redacted versions of those memos public last year.
FBI spokesman Brian Hale said the report underscored the need for all agency employees, regardless of position, to obey rules about official records. The Justice Department declined to comment.
Some Republicans said the Inspector General’s report provides more evidence that the FBI was motivated by political considerations when it started investigating the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russia.
“This is the first of what I expect will be several more ugly and damning rebukes of senior DOJ and FBI officials regarding their actions and biases toward the Trump campaign of 2016,” Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham said in a statement.
The Inspector General’s office is currently examining the FBI’s conduct during the investigation, and Barr is also overseeing two inquiries into the origins of the Mueller probe: one led by John Durham, the top federal prosecutor in Connecticut, and another involving senior intelligence officials.
Although the Justice Department will not prosecute Comey, he could face other disciplinary action because the Inspector General’s report has been referred to the FBI and the department’s Office of Professional Responsibility, which investigates employee misconduct.
Democrats in Congress are split as to whether Trump should be impeached for the actions detailed in Mueller’s report, while Republicans have largely stood by the president.

Former Canadian prime minister Kim Campbell and U.S. President Donald Trump
Kim Campbell, Canada’s former prime minister for a coffee break, desperately wants to be relevant.
She’s been searching for it since 1993 when her political career went down in flames along with the Progressive Conservative Party she led at the time.
When she was finished, two seats in the Commons were all the PCs had left after nine years of majority government under Brian Mulroney.
There haven’t been many humiliating defeats like that in Canadian political history, although Donald Trump’s shocking win over Hillary Clinton to become U.S. President in 2016 rivals it.
Campbell has kept busy over the years with a diplomatic posting, teaching law and chairing the Council of Women World Leaders.
Clearly, she doesn’t want to be remembered as Canada’s first — and only — female prime minister, who put Canada’s founding political party on the path to extinction.
So what did Campbell do last week?
She took to Twitter to wish harm on Trump in order to get attention — fashionable among certain armchair warriors who imagine themselves as provocative and cutting edge.

As the U.S. east coast from Florida to the Carolinas was preparing for the wrath of Hurricane Dorian, Campbell didn’t offer words of support or encouragement for those who might be in its path.
She offered no comfort to those agonizing over whether and where to flee.
Instead, obsessed by her scorn for Trump and his Florida resort, she tweeted: “I’m rooting for a direct hit on Mar-a-Lago.”
Campbell has since deleted the post, saying it was a single mistake and she only intended to be sarcastic.
Really?
When people responded with understandable outrage to her initial idiocy, Campbell responded with a critique of Trump’s climate polices, telling one of her critics to “get a grip.”
Eric Trump, the President’s son, tweeted in response: “Our family is rooting for the safety of millions of homes, businesses, families and wonderful people in a great state of Florida. #Classless.”
When Eric Trump is the voice of reason in a controversy you single-handedly created by your own crassness and stupidity, it’s time to re-evaluate your priorities.
This isn’t the first time Campbell has taken a cheap shot at Trump.
Earlier this year, amid concerns of a U.S. government shut down, she responded to a tweet by offering her charming analysis of Trump, writing “he really is a motherf—–.”
She also unloaded on First Lady Melania Trump, suggesting she doesn’t do a lot.
Twitter doesn’t seem to be a good medium for Campbell.
Last year, she honoured us with her opinion that female TV anchors shouldn’t wear sleeveless outfits on air, apparently believing she a feminist in a position to judge other women — successful ones — for what they choose to wear.
Former prime minister Kim Campbell was serving as justice minister when she posed for this provaocative photo in Barbara Woodley’s book “Canadian Women in Focus” in 1990.
Predictably, Campbell’s venom for Trump won’t cost her anything.
She remains Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s hand-picked adviser on Supreme Court of Canada appointments.
In the circles she travels in — the Laurentian elite — her comments will be applauded because among that smug crowd Trump Derangement Syndrome is an epidemic.
The mere mention of his name sends purportedly rational people into a frenzy.
Whatever happened to attacking policies rather than the person?
You would think Campbell would understand that better than anyone, given her disgusting campaign ad in the 1993 federal election mocking Jean Chretien’s Bell’s palsy.
This on her way to reducing the now-defunct Progressive Conservatives to two seats, which was the beginning of a 13-year Liberal dynasty.
The good news is that Campbell is less likely to again wade into cheap personal attacks on political leaders after the huge backlash she provoked this time.
The bad news is that means she’ll be looking for relevance in other places. You’ve been warned.
