SHould Canadians that live and pay taxes in foreign lands for a number of years be permitted to retain citizenship?

A person has a right to a nationality, but if we based rights on residency rather than citizenship, foreign nationals living, working, and paying taxes in Canada would get to vote while citizens living abroad would not. He who contributes...

First it is not a business. It is a society which means we must balance the need of the society
with the business aspects of government services.
As for poor Donald I don't know who he would vote for however I don't think he should vote if he
doesn't live here. The five year rule being out of the country and not voting or paying taxes is
the rule you are a Canadian but not contributing to the society of Canada why should you be able
to vote?

How 'bout if you don't have income?

You're completely ignoring my point, this is about taxation without representation for citizens living and working abroad. I could care less about Sutherland personally, but if he's required to file a Canadian tax return due to meeting our residency requirements to do so, then, at least in theory, they could be collecting tax dollars from him. In my books that means that he should have a say in how those tax dollars are spent.

While on the topic of expat voting, do you know who votes in two countries' elections? #cdnpoli

annnyway...

Sheila Gunn Reid ‏@SheilaGunnReid

Court ruled long-term expats are too out of the loop to be allowed to affect domestic policy. Sutherland proves that.

Fine by me. Dual citizenship is legal and he has always lived here anyway.

We dont know if he pays taxes here or not. Its quite possible. If he owns property here (Id be surprised if he doesn) then he does.

for the knuckleheads:

Donald Sutherland left Canada in 1957, he hasn't been allowed to vote in Canadian elections since 1993, so obviously it is Harper's fault and we need to vote him out.

Watch my response.

Another sound and conservative policy from Canada.

Anyone can come to the US and vote. No ID needed... just have a name and address ready when you show up at a polling station.
