Ha.

You know there still is one open? In Bend, Oregon.

Woolworths is now Foot Locker.

Woolworths, or Woolies, as we used to call it, was a British retail firm famous for its Pic N' Mix (the glory days as a child in the Eighties when my mother used to take us in there and we were able to fill up a large bag with a shitload of sweets of our choosing). Unfortunately, it went defunct in January 2009 during the Credit Crunch. I always remember our Woolies being on Victoria Square opposite the town hall. I still miss it a bit.

There were several companies using the name.

Even though Britain decimalised its currency in 1971, I'm just about old enough (40 in July) to remember the shilling coin, which was in circulation from around 1550 until 31st December 1990 (when the shilling was completely abolished leaving us with just pounds and pence). From 1971 until 31st December 1990, a shilling was equal to 5 pence. The slang name for a shilling was "bob", so if you bought something for two shillings you said "It cost me two bob." I vaguely remember going into the Food 'N Tipple shop (where my mum worked) when we lived in Bury as a young boy with my pal and vaguely remember seeing a shilling coin in my hand.
