not unsurprising given the way some of them carry themselves even on this small board.

anyway, dat asymmetry:

Democratic voters are almost three times as likely to have "blocked, unfriended, or stopped following someone on social media" after Donald Trump's victory, according to a study released Monday.

The nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI ) found 24 percent of Democrats distanced themselves from people on social media because of a political postings. Nine percent of both Republicans and independents reported doing the same to those in social media circles.

Additionally, 28 percent of liberals surveyed said they removed someone from their social media circle because of the content that person posted, compared with 8 percent of conservatives.

For moderates, 11 percent said they blocked, unfriended or unfollowed someone due to what that person posted online.

The survey shows considerable splits along gender lines as well.Women were "twice as likely as men to report removing people from their online social circle because of the political views they expressed online," 18 percent to 9 percent, according to the study conducted by Daniel Cox and Robert P. Jones.

Three in 10 Democratic women said they removed someone from a social media platform due to a political opinion shared. This compares to just 14 percent of Democratic men doing the same.

Republican men and women were about equal on this front, with 10 percent of GOP men saying they blocked, unfollowed, or unfriended someone on social media because of political postings and 8 percent of Republican women following suit.

Meanwhile, 5 percent of those polled said they will alter plans to spend less time with select members of their family because of their political views.

This, too, showed a partisan divide: 10 percent of Democrats said they planned to avoid certain family members, and 2 percent of Republicans said they would do likewise.

The PRRI survey was taken Dec. 7–11 among 1,004 adults with a 3.6 percentage point margin of error.

There are reasons why people unfriend on social media. I for one rarely do but a few
more conservative types unfriended me and that's alright their privilege.
I do not take kindly to people posting things of my facebook page that are blatantly racist
or demeaning to women or consistently verbally abusive. A few were shown the exit I admit.
I do not wish to be included with individuals who are not respectful of others. That should
bring a laugh, however here I have made an exception. On my social site I have business,
political and even grand kids with access and I feel when someone goes over the line I
contact them personally rather than just pull the plug.

I've never unfriended anyone because of their political views. Although I've had a few unfriend me because I refuse to buy into their nonsense.

I don't have that problem - I rarely go on Facebook and I don't currently have any conservative friends - conservative relatives, yes - but you can't choose those.

I'm wondering why this is even a story. Has society deteriorated to the point where the threat of being 'unfriended' is somehow mortally distressing? Unfriending an Interwebs friend?

Are there safe spaces for people who have to live through the trauma of being unfriended? Can one claim a disability pension or contact a lawyer to sue for damages?

Hi, I'm Joel Hyatt. Somewhere in these dusty law books, an idea was lost. That the law is for people and if you've been wronged, you deserve compensation. At Hyatt Legal Services, we can help you recover legally and financially from the trauma and stress being mistreated on social media.

We've helped a lot of people overcome the pain of being 'unfriended' on Facebook, or having your picture removed from someone's 'favourites' on a social media site.

Have you received a thumbs down or a red flag when you've posted to a website? The personal suffering from discovering that you've been attacked on social media can send you into a spiral of depression, physical distress and self loathing.

But it doesn't have to be this way. At Hyatt Legal Services, we cannot help with the medical problems associated with being called a name or getting blocked from accessing someone's Internet page, but we can ease the financial stress and help you recover.

Here's an unsolicited testimonial.

It happened to me when a friend called me a 'war monger', just because I asked if anyone voted for Donald Trump. And his friends said mean things like, 'You gotta big nose!' Then he unfriended me on Facebook and removed my picture from his page! I was crushed! I couldn't go to work and stopped eating properly. In less than a month, I lost 30 lb and developed a fear of computers. I thought my life was over, until a friend suggested I phone Hyatt Legal. They got me a cash settlement of $120,000 and helped improve my self esteem!

I'm still anxious going near my laptop, but Hyatt Legal was there for me when all my Internet friends weren't.

Call Hyatt. Hyatt helps!

What's missing from the original post is some indication as to the content of the so-called offending posts, and what sort of behavior actually precipitates the "unfriending". If one can take what happens on this site as any indication of the larger picture, the more one moves to the political right the more likely they are to sacrifice reasoned debate in favour of insult and ridicule. I'm not thin-skinned by any means but my ignore list here is not empty. We all get to choose our friends don't we? damngrumpy touched on it above, some people are just jerks.

Totally agree. Personal political views are no reason to look down on anyone (well, okay, short of cutting peoples' heads off and stuff like that), but bad behavior of the socially unacceptable sort is a good enough reason for me. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but if they can't express that opinion with some degree of courtesy and respect then fukkem, they're gone. You know the type, the ones who can disagree with you without calling you names.
