It's what every nation tries to do. It is one of the prime functions of government. That, and feigning democracy.

The fact that we can criticize like we do means that we have a democracy. Like Goober mentioned, to much democracy (as in Calif.) can be harmful. We just cannot afford it. I am happy with what we have.

California has Proposition Laws - These when passed by a popular vote then force the State Govt to implement that Proposition. Look at the mess California is in in large part due to some of these Propositions.

I recall a management consultant giving a seminar on "democracy." He said, "Ask the underlings for input on where they want the Xmas party; for important issues slam the door shut and make the decision yourself." The commitment to democracy by government, provincial, state, or federal is no stronger.

The freedom to criticize is simply a pressure valve; the process continues uninterrupted.

Well I would disagree with that consultant. Did everyone just lap that one up???

Besides Israel, there are all kinds of nations and special interest groups attempting to
influence the free press of the world. Free Press of the World is something akin to a
cruel joke though. Most of the media institutions are owned by some of the biggest
special interest groups and very large conservative conglomerates. They are by nature
not friendly to anything that does not support their view. Oh they are obliged to cover
the opposite side of view, but that is done with some times less that objectivity.
There are times though the media will present the situation head on where ever the
chips may fall. There are also some people in the political middle and left that do present
the other side.
Israel has every right to put the best people they have on the public relations front line.
The problem for the Arabs and others is, they are better at it. They look sincere and they
are not radical, they don't make death to whomever statements, and they are not linked
to radical suicide bombers and others deemed to be terrorists.
See people don't tend to take the word of radical groups like that, and they view any of their
positions with suspicion as they should. The only way they are going to compete with the
Israelis is to denounce all violence, accept human rights, and exchange handshakes and
smiles declaring violence over, with their Israeli neighbours. We all know how likely that is
to happen don't we? Until that happens, I personally don't give much credibility to the
anti Israeli point of view. Mind you I view the positions put forward with more favour but
not much more favour. Neither side are angels by any means but Israel does not make
bomb plots against the west, so who would I side with? It won't be with those who want to
end the western way of life in favour of bowing to the east five times a day that is for sure.

The more senior staff knew he was simply describing the culture within the organization (either corporate or government.) For some younger members, it was similar to being told there was no Santa. You know, Goober, the myths by which we live and die: for Queen and country, for freedom and democracy, the Senate and the Roman People,...)

I would say the both Liberal and Conservative Govts that we have had since Chretien came to power are a perfect example.

That also goes hand in hand with misinformed voters - Getting sucked in on emotion.

And our Parliamentary system sucks - I often admire the UK parliament.

Yup! We have the freedom to whine.

"Oh look harry, the slaves are whining again. Isn't that precious?"

"Let them eat cake!"

That's not the point.

I'm not trying to say who is the lesser evil.

Our democracy is a whhore to the highest bidder
The system is broken and easy to exploit.

Just a suggestion - Research Media Concentration in the Western Countries. You might be surprised. Then post a thread - Lots of meat on that one particular topic. Also look at NB and the Irving's, just a tip
