I wonder if the bulls consider it a 'sport', JLM. It is barbaric as IRBS noted.

Right, give the bull even less ability to defend himself. Besides, half the fun for the blood thirsty crowds that watch this appalling spectacle are there for the gore.
sorry, I got mixed up with the other tournament in which the bulls are not harmed.

Maybe, maybe not, if so maybe the Calgary and Williams Lake Stampedes should be discontinued! I don`t think there is a unanimous conclusion about this. Thousands attend the Cloverdale Rodeo and the Falkland Rodeo. Regardless, did the man deserve to dieÉ. I certainly don`t think so!

He took his chances, had experience on his side and lost the battle. Ever watched a bull fight, JLM. Ever seen the bull struck and gored and used as a pin cushion? Sickening is what comes to mind.

It`s strange how when one suggests a judge impose a death penalty for the worst lowlife in the country a large percentage of the population is up in arms, but yet when someone dies engaging in a sport that is fairly widely accepted the drama queens applaud! :) :)

When it comes to capital punishment, there is, as we have often seen, always a chance that the person is in fact innocent
Death by sport has no such distinction

FPS, JLM. A convicted murderer is a far cry from someone who chooses to engage in any sport where death may be the outcome. As for fairly widely accepted, how many countries do you know of that engage in bull fighting?

More accurately SOMETIMES a chance!

Exactly the point I was trying to make! A person who engages in sport is not the heinous character who engages in raping and mutilating children and defenseless women. I have no problem with someone objecting to sport involving animals but that`s a far cry from dismissing their death as a valid outcome!

It`s getting to be a pretty sad world when we start applauding the death of competitors in sports. I`m not sure who the poor fellow harmed.

It's not a sport.

The people applauding are not the ones accepting the "sport". But if you are going to have it, then make it fair. Don't kill the bull just because he happens to win one. This "athlete" chose the risks and lost. End of story. 0 sympathy. Had he won he would have tortured and killed the bull for no reason whatsoever other than entertainment of the lowest form of society.

Some say it is! Any activity involving opponents can be considered a sport in my books, unless you happen to have a better definition. I'm not saying or even thinking it's a tasteful sport, but nonetheless still a sport!

In what "sport" do you kill the victor? In what "sport" is the loser expected to be tortured to death? If you want to make it a sport, put 2 people out there and let them fight to the death. Don't put an animal who has no means of consent to even be a participant.

Dogfighting. Cockfighting. Bear-baiting. Badger-kicking. All those fine, honorable sports.

There is a big difference between roping a cow and poking a dozen spears into one before it dies.

Gotta be right up there with skinning dogs alive so the meat is more tender.

Romans thought feeding christians to lions was a sport. Somehow it is no longer in vogue.

I would consider putting naked people in the ring with a grizzly fair game if they want to fight something to the death.

There's a huge difference between disliking and being disgusted with a "sport" & thinking the guy involved in it deserved to be killed. Like I've said before the most heinous murderers and rapists and child molesters don't even qualify for the death penalty and that was the ONLY point I was making in my post!

I neither thought nor stated that the matador deserved to die.

Bulls not the only animal to suffer injury

“But it’s part of their culture’ is the argument commonly used to defend bullfighting, but this argument is also used to defend female circumcision (genital mutilation). It could also have been used to defend witch-burning, bear-baiting and a multitude of other evils, “Culture” is not a magic word, and simply labeling something as such doesn’t make it right and above criticism. Also, the word “culture” suggests the enhancement and enrichment of people or a society, and watching animals being tortured to death doesn’t fall into this description."

And I stand by that statement. As a participant in this primitive 'sport', his death was unfortunate but deserved. If you want to protect lives like his, stop the 'sport'.

It's all a matter of degree, maybe we should kill all the guys who participate with cows and horses at the Calgary stampede.
