MIDLAND, Ont. — A man who doused himself in gasoline and lit himself on fire at a Midland, Ont., service station looked like a fireball running from the scene, a witness said.
Cole Hunter, 31, of Collingwood, Ont., walked up to the gas bar at 1 p.m. Wednesday, set himself ablaze and ran off. He made it as far as a nearby churchyard, where he collapsed. People who ran after him doused the man in water in an attempt to put out the flames.
Hunter died overnight in hospital.
“When I got outside, I saw this giant fireball,” said Paul Northcott, who lives nearby and had run downstairs to investigate when he heard the commotion.
“At first, I thought someone was pushing a car away from the pumps, but then I realized it was a person.”
The flames threatened the gas station as well.
Six fuel pumps, including one almost charred beyond recognition, were damaged in the ensuing fire.
The coroner is to conduct a post-mortem.

Well, he got his wish. He wanted to commit suicide and was, in the end, successful.

Man found dead at London, Ont., power plant

LONDON, Ont. — Workers at a London, Ont., power plant arrived Friday morning to find a man with no vital signs who appeared to have cut his way into an area that contains 27,000 volts of power.
Paramedics had to wait nearly half an hour for Hydro One officials to cut the power to the area before they could assess him.
Employees told police that trespassers frequently cut their way into the compound to steal copper, despite the hazard signs and barbed wire that surround it.
Police said they must notify next of kin before they can release the deceased’s name.

A 3-year-old boy who was mauled by jaguars after falling into their exhibit at a zoo in Arkansas on Friday is in critical condition, a hospital spokesman said.

The child was seized at the neck by one of two jaguars and at the foot by the second cat after falling 15 feet (4.5 meters) into the enclosure at the Little Rock Zoo, his father and grandfather, who were with him when it happened, told Little Rock police.

The boy suffered extensive scalp lacerations, a depressed skull fracture and several puncture wounds, the police report quoted a doctor at Arkansas Children's Hospital at Little Rock as saying.

The wounds did not appear to be life-threatening, the police report said.

The boy's father and grandfather said they threw a camera bag and an empty water hose spool at the animals, causing them to drop the child, according to the police report.

When zoo personnel arrived they entered the exhibit and used fire extinguishers to keep the jaguars at bay until the rescue was completed, according to police.

Authorities said they were trying to establish how the child fell into the open-air exhibit at the zoo, one of the state's most popular attractions.

A hospital spokesman declined to identify the child, citing the family's request for privacy and the age of the patient.
The child's family lives in Maumelle, a Little Rock suburb, according to the police report.

The jaguar exhibit has been closed to the public pending further review of the incident, a zoo spokeswoman said.

The mysterious disappearance of a missing 200 pound pig pits neighbor against neighbor. And it ended rather violently.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s office got a call for a domestic disturbance just after 10:30 p.m. Monday.

Joshua Finke is charged with felony first degree assault. Authorities say the 38-year-old victim and his roommates believed Finke had something to do with the disappearance of their 200 pound pig and confronted him at a home in Winfield.

A fight broke out and authorities say Finke stabbed the victim once in the back of the head with a screw driver and 22 times in the back.

The victim was treated and released from the hospital. We spoke with him on Tuesday, but he did not want to be identified.

Finke is being held on a $100,000 cash-only bond.

The pig is still missing. Police think it may have run off.

DALLAS - A Texas man doing high-speed spins in his sports utility vehicle at a Dallas-area Walmart parking lot died after his car crashed into a loading dock, trapping him inside, and caught fire, police said on Wednesday.
North Richland Hills police said they responded to reports of reckless driving at the mostly empty parking lot early Tuesday morning and found the vehicle stuck in a pile of wooden pallets, engulfed in flames.
The unidentified driver reportedly drove in circles backward, doing "donuts" before crashing, police said.
Emergency personnel were not able to rescue the man from the vehicle and he died at the scene.

Golfer killed by crocodile during late-night swim

JOHANNESBURG - A four-metre-long crocodile has killed a South African golfer who went for a late-night swim at a dam called Lake Panic in Kruger National Park, a park official said on Friday.
Deep sea diver Jacques van der Sandt, 29, was dragged under water by the crocodile at around 10 p.m. on Wednesday and was later found in the jaws of the reptile, which was killed in order to recover the body.
"It had him in his mouth and was swimming in the water with him," Danie Pienaar, acting head of Kruger National Park, told 702 Talk Radio. "It was in the public area ... we also don't know if there is anything wrong with the crocodile," he added, explaining the reasons for shooting the animal.
Local press reported Van der Sandt had been drinking in the clubhouse before he went looking for golf balls, jumping into the lake where there is a resident crocodile.

I really don't understand the necessity of killing the croc, since the stupid victim was already dead!

Revenge. Man needs revenge so much, that he will sometimes actually call it justice.

Police car strikes, kills student lying on Massachusetts road

A Chatham, Massachusetts, police cruiser ran over and killed a college lacrosse player lying on an unlit road early on Thursday, authorities said.
Garrett Gagne, 22, of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, was lying on an unlit road at about 4 a.m. when he was struck by a Chatham police car responding to an emergency call, police said in a statement.
Gagne, a senior at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, was taken to Cape Cod Hospital where was later pronounced dead, the statement said. It said the incident was under investigation and it was not known why Gagne was in the road or his condition.
Gagne, a four-year lacrosse player at St. Lawrence and a government major, had been in Chatham to celebrate New Year's Eve with friends.
William Fox, president of the university, said the school had set up a memorial website for Gagne and would hold a memorial gathering for him.
"Wisdom and meaning seem impossible right now in the midst of our immediate, heart-breaking sadness," he said in a statement.

Saskatoon woman dies in cleansing ceremony in Peru
By Kristy Brownlee, QMI Agency First posted: Wednesday, February 04, 2015 02:53 PM EST
A 32-year-old Saskatoon woman died after drinking a nicotine-based brew during a cleansing ceremony in Peru, a local report says.
Jennifer Logan died Jan. 17 at a spiritual retreat at Canto Luz in the jungle in southeastern Peru near Puerto Maldonado.
Logan's father, Fraser, said police in Peru are investigating her death and it's expected to take close to a month.
Logan collapsed moments after she swallowed the concoction and died before reaching the hospital, Peru's 24 Horas reported.
The Canto Luz website says it offers ayahuasca ceremonies where participants drink on-site prepared medicine that contains a variety of traditional plants to cause the drinker to purge evil spirits.
A statement on its website says the company "is aware of a growing trend, created by massive ayahuasca tourism in Peru, to brew extremely psychedelic and often dangerous potions, by adding other psychotropic plants."
But it says staff at the centre "prepare the brew strictly with ayahuasca vine and chacruna leaf with no other admixtures and work towards continuous education of our guests about the traditional healing and long term effects vs short lived elation of a recreational trip (sic)."
Fraser said the coroner told him his daughter died of pulmonary edema, a condition where fluid fills the lungs. But he said it's unclear whether it was caused from drinking the fluid.
Jennifer earned a bachelor's degree in international studies from the University of Winnipeg and a master's degree in geography from York University in Toronto, according to her obituary.
