Re: COVIDD-19 'Pandemic'

I still want to know what airline emissions and post office debt have to do with fighting Kung Flu?

Senate, White House reach $2 trillion stimulus deal to blunt coronavirus fallout

This pertains to the $500 billion loan and loan guarantee program that the Treasury Department would be tasked with administering for companies, states, and cities. Of that amount, $425 billion is supposed to go to businesses, cities and states. An additional $50 billion would go to passenger airlines, as well as $8 billion for cargo airlines, and $17 billion for firms that are deemed important to national security.

House Democrats released their own larger and more generous stimulus package on Monday, stuffed with provisions that would be non-starters for Republicans such as a $15 minimum wage requirement for airlines and businesses that receive funds. But that legislation would be set aside and Pelosi would attempt to move the Senate bill through the House.

Final issues included a push by Democrats for a dramatic increase in food stamp benefits in exchange for accepting billions more in funding for the administration’s farm bailout that Republicans have included in the stimulus bill. Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.) said in a news release that the legislation would increase the amount the Department of Agriculture can spend on its bailout program from $30 billion to $50 billion.
Democrats were also seeking more money for Native American tribes. And there was dispute about whether Planned Parenthood affiliates and other non-profits offering reproductive services would be able to access the small business loans. It was not immediately clear how that issue had been resolved.

“The easiest way for us to do it is to put aside our concerns for another day and get this done," Pelosi said Tuesday on CNBC. "My goal always has been to bring this bill to the floor under unanimous consent.”
However, any lawmaker of either party could object, and in an early warning sign Tuesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) voiced concern about the legislation over Twitter, writing that despite “vague statements” no one had seen text of the legislation that “seems to give a *HALF TRILLION DOLLARS* away to big corporations, w/ few worker protections.”

Congress has already passed two much smaller coronavirus relief bills: an $8.3 billion emergency supplemental for the health-care system, and a $100-billion-plus bill to boost paid sick leave and unemployment insurance and provide free coronavirus testing.

Re: COVIDD-19 'Pandemic'

Imagine if 10 years ago you were approached by a time traveler and he was like "look, I don't have much time to explain, all I can tell you is that the year 2020 is going to be an absolute circus. You know Donald Trump, the star of the apprentice? Well he's the president of the United States and at the beginning of 2020 he gets into a Twitter beef with Iran that almost starts world war 3. Australia catches on fire and a woman tries to save it by selling pictures of her boobs. Kobe Bryant passes away in a helicopter crash. Half the world is devasted, the other half just makes messed up memes. A little time passes and just when the world starts recovering from the loss of Kobe some dude in China eats a raw bat and starts a global pandemic that specifically kills maw maw's and paw paws. Everyone loses their minds. 40% of the population thinks it's the end of the world another 40% thinks it's all fake and 20% blames the whole thing on cell phone towers and Tom Hanks kids. The one thing everyone seems to agree on is that the only way to survive is by hoarding toilet paper. Grocery stores are ransacked and Charmin ultra soft essentially replaces the dollar as the United States official currency. Eventually as hysteria grows, world governments are forced to shut the entire planet down and lock everyone in their houses and the only person that can keep the people from completely flipping out and starting a huge riot is a gun toting, mullet sporting, homosexual, Oklahoma man with a meth addiction and 180 pet tigers...
oh and Carol totally killed her husband “

Re: COVIDD-19 'Pandemic'

'A fundamental shift': Nearly half of reported COVID-19 cases in Canada now from community spread

How a lab in Sask. that focuses on animals became Canada's $23M hope for a COVID-19 vaccine

In the global race to find a COVID-19 vaccine, the federal government announced Monday it is pumping $23 million into an academic research lab in Saskatchewan.
The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization - International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac) at the University of Saskatchewan started as a modest veterinary lab in 1975. But it has evolved into a world class facility that the Trudeau government is betting can develop a vaccine to stop the pandemic.
The Saskatoon lab already has a head start. It has been working on coronavirus vaccines, primarily for animals, for four decades, including successful vaccines for cattle and pigs.
Today, the vaccine centre is one of only a few high-level containment facilities in the world able to conduct research on a vaccine for COVID-19.
In a wide-ranging interview Friday, VIDO-InterVac research scientist Darryl Falzarano and associate director Paul Hodgson told CBC News that in the past, generating interest in funding research into a pan-coronavirus vaccine for humans has been a challenge.
While the focus is now on stopping COVID-19, Hodgson said finding a pan-coronavirus vaccine is their "vision statement," much like a universal flu vaccine has been a goal of scientists for decades.
"That's something we've never been able to get funding for," said Falzarano.

But that has all changed, at least for the foreseeable future. Today, there are 160 people working at the lab — and up to 30 per cent of them are working on a coronavirus vaccine.
The Public Health Agency of Canada gave VIDO-InterVac the green light to start researching a vaccine for humans in late January. Researchers isolated the virus from a sample and have since grown the virus in a cell culture and are now testing a vaccine candidate in animals.
One of the questions Hodgson says he gets asked frequently these days is, "Why can't you do a vaccine faster?"

The answer is complicated.

The federal government's multimillion-dollar funding announcement, part of a global push to develop a vaccine, comes in the middle of an international health crisis that has already killed more than 18,000 people worldwide. As of Tuesday, Canada had more than 2,700 COVID-19 cases, resulting in 27 deaths.
Over the past two decades there have been global outbreaks of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), both caused by coronaviruses. But when the outbreaks subsided, so did the research into a vaccine.
In 2003, VIDO-InterVac was part of the rush to develop a SARS vaccine in Canada, dubbed the SARS Accelerated Vaccine Initiative. Although promising candidates were developed in a relatively short period of time, ultimately a vaccine for SARS was never put through trials and no vaccine exists today.
"Until MERS came along [in 2012], there probably wasn't that strong of evidence that a coronavirus would be something that we should worry about, and that's going to happen again," Falzarano said.
Hodgson said scientists are using knowledge gained from SARS and MERS. But for years prior to the current outbreak, finding a pan-coronavirus vaccine for humans wasn't a priority for governments or the big pharmaceutical companies. And when it comes to finding vaccines, the research follows the money.
Two years ago, VIDO-InterVac earned a four-year grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the federal government's funding agency. The government of Saudi Arabia also kicked in grant money. The research project? A vaccine that stops the transmission of MERS from camels to humans.
"We've been working more immediately on MERS vaccines and always moving, very slowly, looking at different ways you could start to try to sell the concept better of a pan-coronavirus vaccine," Falzarano said. "It's disappointing to me. It's something that I planned to do when I worked here and then it seemed clear that nobody was too interested in [funding] that concept."
Now, funding vaccine research has become imperative. The Trudeau government has committed $11 million to VIDO-InterVac's vaccine research and an additional $12 million to increase manufacturing capabilities for clinical trials.
According to Hodgson, Canada's capacity to manufacture a vaccine domestically is concerning.

"From a national security or emergency preparedness perspective, the manufacturing capacity we have has really started to go down," Hodgson said.
VIDO-InterVac had been pushing the Canadian government to increase manufacturing capacity.
'Our ultimate goal'
Three times a week, scientists from the Saskatoon lab start their long day on an early morning conference call with the World Health Organization as they spearhead Canada's contribution to the global effort to find a vaccine.
So far, Canada is one of 10 countries participating in a research network the WHO calls Solidarity, which is studying existing drugs that could potentially treat COVID-19.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO's director-general, told a news conference Friday that international co-operation will provide the level of data necessary to determine the most effective treatments.
As of Friday, neither the U.S. nor China were listed by the WHO as participating in the Solidarity trials.
Back at VIDO-InterVac, the team is focused squarely on developing a vaccine to protect the world.
"That's our ultimate goal," Hodgson said. "It would be fantastic if we developed a cure and made $100 million and were self-sufficient from this point forward, but our vision is protecting Canada and the world from infectious diseases."

Re: COVIDD-19 'Pandemic'

Hi back at ya.

Thanks for the info about NZ. It is great getting a feel for the situation directly from someone that lives there.Like most responsible countries , sounds like you are buttoning down and following protocol. Some folks here are still hoarding........a sign of fear / anxiety .....and greed ;-) Toilet paper is worth more than gold at the moment ;-)
Stay healthy, safe....... and keep coming back here as it is so nice to see you.
there are some work around's to the shortages we are seeing. For instance you might find disposable mechanics gloves at costco where you will not find medical disposable gloves. You will also find dog poop bags that you can carry with you and put over your hand if you have to touch something.

Btw, China after a few weeks with no new cases had 47 new ones yesterday. Pack those churches in a few weeks and see what happens but I'll guarantee Trump wont be anywhere near one himself.

From Unist’ot’en Solidarity Brigade
Molly Wickham
“While most of us are hunkered down avoiding the spread of covid 19, CGL and RCMP are ramping up work on the territory and governments are patting Canada on the back for working so well together in a crisis.
MEANWHILE, REALITY CHECK= CGL continues to import workers on the territory bringing in pipe, clearing the right of way in Gidimten and Likhts'amisyu territory and transporting man camps around. RCMP continue to import and export CIRG members from all over the province to facilitate the deduction of our territories.
It's not a coincidence this is happening while I'm about to give birth, and while our people are preparing for discussions with government and now a pandemic. SICK SICK way to keep profit over people.
Way to go BC and Canada!!

While we are in self imposed isolation, the government is sending thousands of men to work on pipelines and Site C. Convenient, eh!
there has been a lot of talk about the construction industry in general in BC. The building that are being built seem to still be worked on every day.

I am surprised the pipeline work continue, endangering everyone and especially the local populations and emergency services.

My wife gave birth during the SARS thing and I feel badly for anyone who has to go through it with hospitals now crowded with highly infectious people.

Construction in BC has to halt. Period.

There are protocols put into place to continue work safely I received mine for upcoming work a couple of days ago, much better than even screening at airports:) use precautions and carry on

By Easter this will be over.

50,000+ confirmed covid-19 infections in the US.

Half of all confirmed cases are in New York state

NYC now has more cases per capita than Italy

Why would they lie about new cases after a week of none?

If they are lying (which wouldn't surprise anyone) about the amount or the pause and its actually more, then it makes my original concern greater.

Perhaps. Sometimes its just plain racism.
