Liberals reject move to fast-track bill creating abortion buffer zones

The Liberal government has rejected an immediate ban on protests outside abortion clinics — a day after saying such a measure was needed to protect women from being harassed and intimidated.

In an unexpected move Thursday, Progressive Conservative MPP Lisa MacLeod requested the unanimous consent of MPPs from all parties to pass the Liberal bill on the spot.

But the governing party refused MacLeod’s motion to have its own legislation approved right away as has happened with other laws that have overwhelming support in the House.

“It’s wedge politics,” MacLeod (Nepean-Carleton) said to reporters after her bid failed. “If they really wanted to put women’s safety first… then they would have done this when issues started arising over a year ago, or they would have accepted my unanimous consent request.”

NDP MPP Jennifer French (Oshawa) told the Star she “can’t imagine why anyone would be having a conversation about delay.”

“The debate part and the waiting is garbage… to delay for the sake of wedging the Tories or playing politics, that is disappointing and it is not what… Ontario women deserve.”

But the minister of the status of women — who stood alongside Attorney General Yasir Naqvi just a day prior at their announcement on the importance of creating safe zones, given a rise in anti-abortion activities — said the bill needs to go through the “democratic process.”

“It’s a sensitive issue for many Ontarians, and we want to ensure all those voices have a place at the table and say what they want to say, and do this properly,” said Indira Naidoo-Harris.

Liberals love to twist their logic to fit every situation. A leftard on the news last night said "A group of protestors is not an individual so therefore does not have the right to assemble"

That sounds like a quote from Pierre Elliot Trudeau (for those of you old enough to remember him).

There should be a buffer zone.

"Well, you can exercise your most basic political right over there, but you can not exercise your right over here" is a non-starter with me (if on public property)

Let's be clear, you have no right to impede someone walking down the street. You have no right to spit on people, to threaten them, to interfere with them carrying on their legal activities. But you do have a right to say what you please to them, to display signs, to peacefully protest. Those walking down the street do not have a right to not be offended.

What is required is good security.

They also support a carbon tax.

*gasp*

Unfortunately, a carbon tax wont make ordinary people rich enough to afford 120,000$ Electric cars.

At least we can use it to fund more wasteful spending on useless tasks

And help maintain our borrowing levels

If we didn’t have to tax the shit out of people to pay for our debt. Maybe like in Dubai everyone could afford to buy a 120,000$ electric car

What about those GOD HATES FAGS idiots protesting the funerals of falling soldiers.

Should they be protected?

What if Catholics asserted their stance on birth control and set up in front of Pharmacies that sell prophylactics and morning after pills?

As it stands, if a women is going to get one of these government approved procedures, they should not be harassed on their way in or out of a clinic.

Yep, they should be allowed to do that. But other people should be allowed to stand in front of them so nobody can see them. And if they stand in the street, you're allowed to run them over.

I think people's tolerance or intolerance is rooted in how attached or detached they are to the issue. Some might think it's fine to let those God hates Fags Morons protest at soldiers funerals while they might be horrified at the right to lifers standing outside an abortion clinic. I find both actions equally abhorrent.

I'm a free speech guy. I believe you should be able to say or write anything you want, but I also believe that your freedom does not trump the rights of others privacy.
