This is a giant tax increase for individuals and business gets all the benefit as they get it all back, you as an individual do not. Once again the governments are putting the
tax burden on us while business get the gravy, and I can't wait to vote against my
BC provincial government. These clowns spent all our money on the Olympics and we get to pay the cost now they bail themselves out with the HST, at our expense.
We will pay additional taxes plus we will face other tax hikes to pay for the games
all so a handful of special interests can benefit.

I think we should just hang and rattle until the time comes. One way or the other this scenario isn't likely to play out the way we're thinking now and the politicians (if they have a single brain cell) will be making changes, OTHERWISE we the consumer can easily see to it that business doesn't get all the benefit. All we would have to do would be to boycott restaurants for six months and by that time they'd start getting the idea.

I thought Ron meant one big screw instead of two smaller ones! Same old same old in other words. I was a lot happier with Harper when he was supposedly going to put a stop to this. Wonder who got to him!!!

Ottawa got to him, VanIsle. It is all very well to spout any kind of nonsense when one is sitting in the opposition. Governing is a different matter altogether.

The only thing I care about is them including it in the sticker price. Sure, I can do the math, but so could the computer that printed the sticker. Since they aren't going to include it, the whole thing still annoys me.

Thanks, Francis. I think those people are off their rails. If they want to tax stuff, tax stuff we don't need. Taxing stuff that people need like heating products, bicycles, fire extinguishers, and energy conservation items is just plain inane and insane.

I think that arguing on the basis of need is pitiful.

That's a decision made by the stores, and they do it because they want to show a lower price.

Woolco stores did this in the last years of Canadian operation ( before Wal-Mart bought them out ) as a sales marketing tactic.. It was very nice to see and I really think it was a great way to sell people on the idea but it didn't last long enough in my mind to catch on permanently..

You also have to put yourself in the mind of the Walton family members.

No tax revolt in sight; the tax rates are too low.

Are you seriously talking of tax cuts, big? What do you think that is going to do to the deficit, which already sky high?

If anything there will have to be a tax increase, in order to get the deficit under control. Once the recovery fully gets under way (say, in a couple of years), it will be time to seriously look at spending cuts and tax increase.

No big seriously means in my opinion that taxes are to low..

However in a country hell bent on not raising taxes to keep businesses and positions competitive, you will not likely see those going up. More then likely you will see programs axed and frozen to pay the piper.. Plan on seeing Provinces unloading the burden on you and programs as well..

You make a good point, Niflmir. Most European countries have VAT (Value Added Tax) and it is built into the price of the item, so the customer doesn’t see it. What the customer doesn’t see won’t hurt him.

Here it is out into the open. It sounds nice, to be transparent, to be above board, to let people see how much tax is charged etc. But when people see every time that they have to pay 14 or 15 % tax, it only aggravates them.

I think it is much better to keep it hidden, roll it into the price of the item. When I lived in Britain, they had 15% VAT, which is similar to what we have in terms of GST and PST. But it was included in the price of the item, so people did not have to see it every day, and it did not lead to as much aggravation.

I have been hearing that the B.C. government, (Liberal) are going to implementing a "Fart" tax, on top of the HST. I also hear that Campbell is going to be known as a "Fart Smeller" instead of a "Smart Feller." We all know the reason they are doing it now is because the government of B.C. is bankrupt and needs the money to buy more votes. By the time the next election comes around, they will have forgotten about the tax grab and elect the Lying Liberals again.

That's all well and good Fred, but do we have a viable alternative?
