For my sister Motar, Gerry, and distant Christian cousins.Matthew 27:54 The Roman centurian. "Truly, he was a son of a god." (Vero, filius dei erat)
Thank you brother Spade.
In context, this is a professional Roman officer who commands one hundred military men. Certainly he has seen some things in his career that would topple the average citizen. Yet, he and his fellow witnesses are startled by the events surrounding the death of Jesus. The record states: "When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, 'Surely he was the Son of God." (Matthew 27:54 NIV)
In Mark's account, the record goes: "And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, 'Surely this man was the Son of God!" (Mark 15:39 NIV) This soldier was familiar with crucifixion. The physical aspects of Jesus' death would not astound him. "How Jesus died" refers to something of the spiritual experience of Jesus in suffering and death. Christ impressed the man in a way that no other condemned and crucified individual had. And he articulated it thus: "Surely this man was the Son of God!"
For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.
