It's the F*cking South CHINA Sea. What business is it of the US. Do these idiots never learn. Next will be a few Chinese flying planes into some west coast highrise and the Americans will wonder why. Facepalm!!

You may want to do a bit of googling...there is a lot of traffic through those waters, and China is trying to assert control over a large portion of water outside what The Law of the Sea Treaty grants as economic zones. China views these waters no differently than it views it's interests in Taiwan or Tibet. Obviously, it's more than just Americans involved here. Canada is as well as Japan and Australia and many other nations.

The fact is the sea lanes are vital to all nations. There are territorial waters
and then waters of interest. Taiwan is considered Chinese territory by China
not the rest of the world. In this case we decided to become beholden to the
Chinese during the Reagan Bush era and now we are stuck with the situation.
Large corporations that pose as American, Canadian and so on diverted their
financial interest to employ slave labour or the equivalent of slave labour so we
could have cheap running shoes.
The people are their own worst enemy. These companies are about money
period. No patriotism, no social conscience, and no sense of responsibility.
To boot the people are behind them because the retirement money is invested
in them. Even if they rip us off, behave like something lower than pirates and
put us out of work we support them.
In addition we cozy up to dictators and monsters giving them incredible power
over our way of life and then we are offended when they won't play by the rules.
We have done this with commerce, with immigration and with the social structure
of our society.
It is not Obama entirely here, it is us collectively in North America. We have the
resources, the education, and all the ingredients of make the best of everything.
What do we do? We let our companies and our governments turn our advantage
over to foreign interests and then we complain. But before we complain we need
to understand The Republicans re-wrote the rules to deregulate and streamline
things for business and now we are paying the price. We need to regain control
of our interests both at home and abroad.

China has not threatened any shipping. They are projecting their sphere of influence over an area which likely has abundant natural resources including oil.

China's claims are now based on the 600 person town (Sansha) they just built on one of the previously uninhabited islands. That newly populated island becomes the reference point, not mainland China. Vietnam, the Philippines and other nations claiming parts of the China Sea would be wise to follow the Chinese example.

The US is meddling in China's affairs. If the Americans kick up too much of a fuss, the Chinese could convert their trillion US dollar reserve into another currency or gold and knock the US into a recession...

Shakes head. Some lawyer you are.

What you must realize is that no nation on earth interprets the Law of the Sea Treaty the way the Chinese do. Their interpretation of the law is novel and unique. Even if what you say happened to be true, what about the right of free navigation?

The Chinese don't subscribe to the existing liberal oriented world order because they didn't have a hand in its creation. They are building a new world order based on reestablishing the Middle Kingdom.

Too many Western policy makers have no insight into the way Chinese think.

China won't have to go to war with Obama in order to defeat him. His spending habits give them a hook. The Han simply want to humiliate Obama.

First off,China and the USA will not go to war..period. That's just stupid childish talk.

We are living in a new age of Global Economics... every country has it's hooks into some other country as far as resources, imports, exports.. whatever.

Much to my regret I must agree. Obama is all hat and no cattle. He'll get America in trouble without thinking this matter through.

I didn't suggest the Chinese will go to war. However, Obama may stumble into conflict.

The Chinese have seized Globalization from America and made it their own. In doing so they have disempowered American workers.

China has not threatened any shipping....
Yes they have. They have threatened two Vietnamese deals with oil companies. They have challenged Indian ships leaving Vietnamese ports. The Chinese have challenged the USS Implacable on a surveying mission. The Chinese have challenged Filipino ships. A Chinese naval vessel ran aground on a Filipino island about two weeks ago.

I have in laws who are members of the People's Liberation Army. They would love you.

China's claims have nothing to do with blocking the sea lanes. This is about who has the right to this region's rich resources. I'd say China has the best claim to this area... until another country builds a community on an uninhabited island.

An issue that has seen the Chinese install military fixtures.

Which raises the stakes in an area that has far reaching international importance.

If a war breaks out between anyone in the region, shipping will be endangered.

Actually, China takes the position that American naval vessels can't transit international waters in the South China Sea.

What your position boils down to is that Might Makes Right and that Might Entitles Nations to act Unilaterally.

Are you aware that the Chinese also are talking about a role in the Arctic just north of Canada? Isn't there a thread on the forum called Voyage of the Snow Dragon?

BT, the italics, is meant to denote sarcasm.

My apologies for the confusion.
Thanks for the heads up. :)

Bingo.

Which effectively cuts the US off, from the western pacific.

Excellent observation, but it's OK. Might only makes right to EAO, so long as it isn't the Jews or the US doing it.

Thanks for the heads up. :)
No worries.

humm so if Russia plants a city in the far reaches of Northern Canada.. then I guess the disputed lands that both Russia and The Netherlands claim, that has always been part of Canada geography.. well then Russia would the best claim.. is that it?
