Interesting. In this weeks MacLeans the article states that GM can't produce the Volt fast enough to meet demand.
When did Wheels get into Partisan Politics?
In fairness to GM the Volt is a first generation electric car which is bound to have issues. I think they're moving in the right direction. We better start embracing this technology, fossil fuel will be a thing of the past.

People who say the government shouldn't have got involved do not understand
the reasons for doing so. It had nothing to do with the auto industry it had to do
with the mortgage industry. GM and GMAC were in with a company called
Di Tech.com and they were billions in the whole and indebted to the five major
banks for billions. They gave loans to anyone who could breath and the chickens
were coming home to roost. If a failure that big had taken place North America
and Europe would have sunk into a major depression that would lasted a generation.
Many do not realize that Japan did what America did in the early 1980's and they
have never really recovered from that recession the only thing that might save them
was the coming a huge Wave. All this nonsense about staying away from involvement
is simplistic nonsense period. The problem is the companies misused some of the
funds they were given, and we may in fact see a return to the problems of 2008.
I don't think the economy can be saved now as it stands without major cuts, but at least
they tried.

GM beta tested electric cars in California ages ago and destroyed all the cars after the test.
It seems to me that Toyota recently had a host of problems without any help from government bailouts. As RCS points out any new technology takes awhile to prefect. Since GM pretty much scrapped its electric car program it is really starting over from scratch so far as the Volt is concerned. Given enough time I expect GM will get it right.
I didn't see anything partisan in that article at all. Chevy had a problem with batteries that were not serviced after crash tests and an improperly installed charging station caused a fire, their engineers are looking into it, a Toyota sales rep compares the reaction to that Toyota received for their engineering shortcomings, sales are lagging GM projections, they call the Volt a competetive car in it's price range after rebates, the car rates higher than Porsche 911 and the Dodge Challenger in owner satisfaction, and to finish off the article:

Yes I know, but unlike then, I think this will become the norm and the technology will be adopted by the driving public.

It is . Just that the cargo carrying capacity is diminished by battery carrying. Besides trucks are not made for us anymore. They are built for city slickers that want to pull a trailer or go skiing a couple of times a year.
