Gouda, cheddar, goat cheese, swiss, camembert, brie, havarti, there are so many, for so many occasions.

A recent cheese I tried, Irish Guinness Cheddar. One of my favourite beers, a very nice cheese!

Never heard of leerdammer until CB said something about it. It's fairly new and is supposed to be competition for emmenthal cheese.

It's kind of like what I know as "swiss cheese" but I think I like it better. Nice stuff...just the right amount of "strength" for me as a good cheese for say, a big thick grilled cheese sandwich. With sliced sour pickles. And grilled onions. And a dab of hot mustard. (Is it lunch time?)

That sounds damned good. We both love cheddar and stout. Maybe we'll try a half-wheel.

I'm fairly certain I've seen this at Sobey's. Probably easier to try out in a small package before shelling out for a half-wheel.

I have no idea what a Sobey's is. I found the company that makes the stuff and if I'm going to pay $18 for shipping cheese (the nearest outlet to here is Calgary), I won't be buying a $8 chunk. If we find we don't like it, we have neighbors. lol

Here's their URL: https://springbankcheese.ca/

lol.. fair enough. Sobey's is a grocery chain, perhaps it's Albertan, not Canadian. I fail to keep them all straight (due to lack of giving a **** on a normal day... lol).

I believe it's an Eastern-based chain (Ontario or Quebec) that doesn't find its way into BC...

Wait a minute... I used to shop at Sobeys when I lived in Fort St John. Mind you, we tend to not count that as having lived in BC so much as an offshoot of Alberta with PST. lol.

lol That's as good a reason as any. :D
Yes, CB, it's an Ontario outfit. Safeway might be able to get it. If people ask them to bring something in they try to and most of the time succeed.

Oh.... and I walked to one when we were camping in Golden I'm pretty sure.

Are you sure y'all don't have Sobeys?

Just gave me an idea. Maybe we can find someone heading for Calgary or going through there. Have to ask around. :)
No Sobey's around here. I'll look em up and see where the nearest is.
Invermere. That's a 4 hour trip to get there. lol I'll check Safeway.

I don't see why they wouldn't. I've yet to see much serious difference in accessing that kind of stuff between the major chains. Just, sitting right where I am, I know the Sobeys nearby has a better cheese selection and more interesting varieties.

Oka has been my favorite Canadian cheese for close to 50 years. Even though it's no longer made by monks, Oka still is heavenly in its nutty creaminess.

Sobeys is what used to be IGA in Alberta when the chain got bought out.

As for my favorite cheeses, you guys have nailed most of them. I love aged cheddar, camembert or gruyere for a snack. Swiss, mozzarella, mild cheddar or colby on sandwiches. I used to make small meals out of a chunk of cheese, a chunk of sausage (usually landjaeger or a dry salami) and a roll or some crackers... one of my favorite lunches :p I have rarely met a cheese I didn't enjoy: I know someone mentioned Limburger, and I liked the flavour but had a hard time initially with the odour...

There is a 30 year old Gouda you can buy here in the Netherlands which is positively amazing.

My favourite would have to be Parmigiano though. Goes great with pear. I enjoy pecorino from time to time, mostly when visiting the in-laws. Fresh mozzarella goes great in a salad too.

Cheeses really vary region to region. Back in Berlin I can't get the gouda I can get here in Leiden, so I go for an emmentaler. The parmigiano is terribly expensive outside of Italy.
