"soccer"

Originally called "Association ball" --- soccer is short for that term

As for American football, under the old rules, there was far more foot in the game than today. In fact, touchdowns yielded zero points. You had to score a conversion in order to be awarded points. It retains its old name but the foot has been virtually taken out of the game.

Yup. It (socca) used to be slang for the sport back in the late 1800s.

Cool. I didn't know that about the North American version of rugby. lol They should rename it carryball. Tote-the-ball? Throw-the-ball? :D

LOL, that sounds like a pretty stupid idea.
Oh, I know. I was once told it was a perfectly gay thing to call football. I've been just joking, though. I can't have any fun playing or watching CFL and sports and games are supposed to be fun so I tease about them. :D I play real football where the ball is actually kicked around a lot. :D

In the old days some folks called it "American rugby football".

Today in RSA union rugby you have a guy like Brian Habana playing both offense & defense. And while rugger fans appreciate his great offense, I think his defense is even better. The rules on the game allow for a 200 lb player like that to be on the field at all times. But American football allows specialization so that it is largely comprised of powerful but unskilled mammoths who lack stamina. It would be so much better if the old rules were brought back.

Les is happy you're not kicking two around.

Well tallola, the pussycats beat my Roughies by two points yesterday in game full of errors and mishaps, apparenlty. Everyone was trying to get the kinks ironed out. Haven't read the Sun today, so don't know what it is saying about the game. There were several articles in the Leaderpost so I gleaned what I could from them.

The Riders started their main man, Darian Durant, but played him only a few times before putting in our back-up QB, Ryan Dinwiddie. He apparently conducted himself well and looks to have second position sewn up. The team that met the Lions yesterday was mainly composed of starters as Ken Miller has to make a decision soon about who to keep and who to let go.

From what I read, the Lions still have some QB problems to work out but played a good game otherwise.

Can hardly wait till the first season game. Go, Riders, Go.

actually lulay (sp?) played an excellent game, but so many of his passes were dropped, or he would have
had much more passing yardage. He is an excellent prospect, and will most likely be no. 2 behind casey
printers, and with those two playing 1-2 punch, they should do very well. What they have to get the
kinks out of is the O line, will probably take awhile, lots of new players, so we must be patient, and
watch them grow.
I didn't watch the game, but have passed on what the 'talking heads' have been saying post game.

The Riders got whupped by the Stamps yesterday in a game that saw them take too many costly penalties. It seems some of the US imports are stil having problems with CFL rules. The offense was lack lustre and the defense was almost nonexistant. The Riders finished the exhibition season 0 - 2. Ken Miller will be making the final cuts this week to pare the team down to 53 players.

Calgary 41 - Sask 17
BC went down to Edmonton 36 - 32
Montreal took the Argos 31 - 23
Hamilton beat Winnipeg 38 - 20

The Allouettes will be travelling to Regina for the season opener with the Riders on July 1rst.

The Argos will be in Calgary, Hamilton will play the Bombers in Winnipeg, and BC will be travel to Edmonton for their July 1rst games.

Not sure about the exact time, tallola, but yeah it was real close. Watched clips of the game on Global today, the Lions looked really good and you are right, their QBs are impressive.

You know what bugs me? We wait all winter and spring for the games to begin and then there are four games on one day - sheesh.

Just ten days to go!

GO, RIDERS, GO!

I was house-sitting for friends and they don't have satellite radio either, so I missed the broadcast too. Talked to my sister in Regina and she gave me the details late yesterday, then I read several online articles this A.M. - not the same by a long shot.

Saskatchewan said goodbye to Ron Atchison yesterday. Ron was a long time member of the Roughrider team, playing in a defensive position. Ron was also the first home-grown Roughie to join the team. He is remembered for his toughness on the field as well as his humanity off the field.

“Atchison joined the Roughriders in 1952 and played in 237 regular season games until his retirement in 1968. During his time with the Green and White, he was named a CFL West all-star six times.
Atchison was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1978. He was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1980 and was one of the inaugural members of the Roughriders Plaza of Honor in 1987.”

Get out your game day gear and be ready to cheer long and loudly for your teams. Tomorrow marks the opening of the CFL season and I am so thankful it has finally arrived. I will be dressed to the nines in my Rider gear and paste on tats from my sister.

The Sask vs Montreal game starts at 4 pm on TSN, followed by the Calgary Stampeders who are hosting the Toronto Argos. I don't get TSN2 so I don't if the BC game is on that channel or not.

GO, RIDERS, GO!

I love it! Kicking it old school. That's the way you had to block back in the day. It reminds me of my old Table Top Football game. The one where you set up the plastic FB Players and flick the switch and the whole board vibrated. Anyone know what I am talking about?
