Police call blitz to sack loose moose at Winnipeg Blue Bombers game
THE CANADIAN PRESS
First posted: Saturday, September 09, 2017 07:38 PM EDT | Updated: Saturday, September 09, 2017 07:53 PM EDT
WINNIPEG — There’s not much that can stop a football team, let alone two of them, but a roaming moose nearly delayed kickoff for the sold-out Banjo Bowl in Winnipeg on Saturday.
Winnipeg Police Const. Rob Carver says the calf was tranquilized outside Investors Group Field shortly before the game between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders was scheduled to begin.
Carver says police had to block off routes to the stadium to keep fans from getting in the way as conservation staff attempted to corner and subdue the animal.
He says officials with the Blue Bombers were calling police wondering if they would have to delay the game.
Joe Johannesson, the conservation officer supervisor for the Winnipeg district, estimates the male moose was between two and three years old.
The province says the moose is on its way to a remote location outside the city.
“It wasn’t a full adult, but it was still a very large animal,” Johannesson said on Saturday afternoon.
“We loaded him into a trailer and he is on his way to a nice, safe place.”
The team tweeted requests for fans to be patient, and careful, while routes to the field were blocked.
Carver said police also used social media to try to inform fans why their path to the game was temporarily closed.
Johannesson said conservation officers began tracking the young moose Friday morning when it was spotted behind a school in the city’s Fort Garry neighbourhood.
It went through some backyards and eluded capture, Johannesson said. It was spotted again Friday evening, but it got away by jumping into the Red River and swimming to the other side.
The moose appeared again early Saturday morning south of the University of Manitoba campus where Investors Group Field is located, and later that morning it was in a field a couple of hundred metres from the stadium.
Johannesson said the moose lay down for quite some time, but then got up and started to move.
By that point, a conservation officer that was trained to tranquilize animals had arrived, and the chase was finally over.
Johannesson said it’s rare for moose to come into the city, but there are natural corridors that make it possible.
“They follow major waterways and he was on the Red River, so he could have come from any direction,” he said.

Banjo Bowl's loose moose is dead
Tranquilizer combined with “stress and exertion” likely lead to animal’s death
DAVID LARKINS, Winnipeg Sun
First posted: Monday, September 11, 2017 11:34 AM EDT | Updated: Monday, September 11, 2017 09:06 PM EDT
A moose that was running free for two days and forced police to close a congested roadway in the lead up to the Banjo Bowl is dead, the province said Monday.
The moose, which was first reported running in the south end of the city Friday but gained great attention when it was spotted running around the University of Manitoba prior to Saturday’s CFL game, “did not survive transport,” a provincial spokesman said in a statement.
Manitoba Conservation officers and Winnipeg police managed to subdue the moose with tranquilizers just before the 2 p.m. kickoff of the game between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Winnipeg police said Sunday the moose was shot twice with tranquilizer darts and then a third time once it was on the ground.
“With thousands of football fans in the area there was a significant concern for public safety but conservation officers were able to tranquilize the moose and prepare it for relocation,” the provincial statement read.
“However, the stress and exertion of running through a populated urban area in hot weather for two days took a toll on the moose and unfortunately it did not survive transport.”
Camille Labchuk, the executive director of Toronto-based Animal Justice, applauded conservation officers making “what appears to be an honest and good-faith attempt to tranquilize and humanely relocate the moose.”
“What we’ve seen far too often — and in fact the default — for conservation officers these days seems to be to shoot first and ask questions later,” Labchuk said, referencing incidents in Ontario and British Columbia where other wild animals were killed by bullets.
Labchuk said the big question her organization has now for Manitoba Conservation is where it will go from here.
“If the goal of the conservation service is to save animals they should always be prioritizing looking back, seeing what they’ve done and how they can do it better next time,” she said. “Maybe this was an unfortunate situation where nothing could have been done and the moose was simply suffering from the heat and the stress of being tranquilized and that was the best that could be done. But maybe there are ways they can tweak their procedures and policies for next time.”

Canada's richest woman, CFL chairman to lock horns in bitter court battle
By Sam Pazzano, Toronto Sun
First posted: Tuesday, September 12, 2017 08:55 PM EDT | Updated: Tuesday, September 12, 2017 09:01 PM EDT
An ugly civil trial involving Canada’s richest woman and the Canadian Football League’s chairman opens Wednesday morning in a Toronto courtroom and it will feature allegations of hard-core pornography and forgery.
James Lawson alleges in a statement of claim he was wrongly sacked from his top post running the investment company Westerkirk Capital Inc. in late 2012 by Sherry Brydson, the sole director and executive chair.
She’s the granddaughter of Roy Thomson and an heiress to the Thomson fortune. She’s believed to be worth and estimated $6 billion.
Lawson, 57, who was about to finish his eight-year contract in 2012, started with an $800,000 annual salary in 2004. He also scored lucrative perks, a $1.4 million forgiveable loan, yearly 4% raises and a pension payout totalling at least three years’ salary.
Four years ago, Lawson launched his wrongful dismissal lawsuit, seeking $24 million in damages. Lawson argued that Brydson punted him because his plan to run Westerkirk professionally, and invest its capital for the best return clashed with the family’s free-flowing management style.
“Sherry Brydson conducts herself as if she is the head or matriarch of the Brydson family and the owner of Westerkirk,” Lawson argued in the claim. “Brydson was in fact only a minority non-voting equity participant.”
Brydson hired celebrated employment lawyer Howard Levitt and his team scoured every detail of Lawson’s work at Westerkirk.
Brydson filed a counterclaim, alleging that Lawson exploited his position at Westerkirk to benefit himself and his relatives, while “publicly disparaging Brydson, her husband and family members,” and ran the business “as if it was his, not hers.”
Lawson, who enacted anti-pornography policies for Westerkirk’s subsidiaries, used his office “to indulge himself in graphic, hard-core racist and misogynistic pornography, as well as pornography graphically depicting sexual activities between humans and animals,” the counter claim documents alleged.
“He distributed some pornography to other persons, including some subordinates. This made Lawson a dreadful role-model of workplace conduct ... (which) poisoned the workplace environment,” alleged the document, concluding this misconduct alone justified his dismissal.
In earlier sworn testimony, Lawson admitted he forwarded porn to other Westerkirk employees from his office e-mail account. Lawson said it was inappropriate.
Lawson, who played two seasons with a Montreal Canadiens farm team after graduating from university, said some hockey pals relayed the porn to him. He asked them to stop.
The offensive tapes could be played at trial.
The counterclaim also alleges that Lawson had an assistant at Westerkirk forge his signature.
None of the allegations made by either party have been proven in court.
Besides his CFL position, Lawson is chief executive at Woodbine Entertainment Corp., a horse racetrack and slot machine complex in Toronto. He has denied most of the allegations, though he admits he asked an associate to sign his name.
Lawson says in his claim that he, “discharged his duties as CEO of Westerkirk faithfully, and in particular, ensured that investments were made carefully after appropriate due diligence.”
Westerkirk’s “amended reply to the defence to counterclaim” alleges that, “the only issue in this case is whether the serial misconduct, serial dishonesty and self-dealing of the plaintiff, James J. Lawson, is cause for his dismissal.”
If he’s terminated for just cause, Lawson would have to pay back a $1.4 million loan to Westerkirk, documents alleged.

Watching my Riders play the Cats today. We have an 8 point lead with just over 5 minutes left in the final quarter. It's a one possession game - accounting for a 2 point conversion.

In spite of the score this has not been a great game by any means for my Riders. For the best part of 2 quarters, the defense kept the team in the lead. Brandon Bridge has done a credible job as pivot but the receiving core save for the odd flash has looked flat. Duron Carter went to the sidelines with an ankle injury early in the game and has not come back. Grant and Roosevelt have been Brandon's primary targets and LaChance has done the ground work. ST's have not been as good as we all know they can be and discipline while solid through the first half, has broken down to the point where our last two have been 15 yarders. The defense had been the team's mainstay throughout the first half but Jones changed his game plan at half-time and there are holes all over the place in the 3rd Q plus tackles were being missed at every turn.

Thankfully, it appears that the defense has gone back to the original plan in the 4th and has so far kept up the pressure on Mazoli.

1:01 Hamilton ball with the score now 27 to 19

:13 Mazoli misses his target in the end zone because Ed Gainey gets called for an DPI

:05 Mazoli at the 5 yard line decides for reasons that will questioned for some time to come, to pass and misses his target in the end zone .............time runs out............and the Riders pull this one off by the skin of their teeth.

Final score: 27 - 19

Ed Gainey got himself another nice interception........in the end zone off an errant pass by Mazoli.......then ran the ball out to the 20. Riders were gifted with two interceptions and a defensive TO in the game.

When I settled in to watch the Argos vs the Esks this afternoon, the last thing I thought I would see is Toronto ahead by a TD near the midway point of the 2nd Q nor a score of 21 - 14 as the Eskimos have been bouncing right back with majors of their own. So, instead of a ho-hum game wherein the Esks dominate, we have ourselves a pretty decent ball game today.

Would really like to see the Argos win this one if only to reward the few diehard fans that have come to the game today. The Argos seriously need to find someway of bringing more people to the park. Playing for the love of the game is all fine and good but having a stadium full of screaming fans the majority of whom are on your side is a great motivator to any team. The Argos deserve no less.

The Argos are blowing this game wide open and after a 125-yard TD by Maurice Jackson now have a respectable 16 point lead over the Esks midway through the 3rd.

Jason Maas is losing his mind on the side-lines after using his one and only challenge for naught only to see his QB sustain a hit to the head unnoticed by the refs and unchangeable.

The Argos will win this one 34 to 26 and the Esks fall to 5 straight losses - something that other teams in the West will greet with some glee. I don't know what Marc has done with this club, but I have to say he has most definitely found a winning formula and the Argo players have obviously bought into it.

Next up, Calgary vs BC

Canada’s richest woman and CFL chair settle differences
By Sam Pazzano, Toronto Sun
First posted: Monday, September 18, 2017 08:29 PM EDT | Updated: Monday, September 18, 2017 08:50 PM EDT
Legal proceedings between Canada’s richest woman Sherry Brydson and James Lawson, chair of the Canadian Football League and head of Woodbine Entertainment, ended Monday with a sincere apology.
“Mr. Lawson has apologized unreservedly to Ms. Brydson for the circumstances that led to his departure from Westerkirk,” stated a communications release Monday.
“Mr. Lawson has also unequivocally withdrawn all prior allegations made by him involving Ms. Brydson, her family, employees and advisors in the legal proceedings and otherwise.”
The apology ended what has been a public and nasty civil dispute after Lawson was sacked, wrongfully he claimed, as boss of Westerkirk Capital Inc. in Nov. 2012 and sought $24 million in damages.
Terms of the settlement agreement were not disclosed. Neither Lawson, Brydson nor their lawyers would comment afterwards.
Brydson is worth a reported $6 billion. She’s the granddaughter of Roy Thomson and an heiress to the Thomson fortune. She fired Lawson in Nov. 2012 from the top post at investment company Westerkirk Capital Inc., where she was executive chair of the board of directors.
In 2013, Lawson sued for wrongful dismissal, claiming $24 million in damages.
In allegations from his court documents — none of which were proved in court — Lawson had asserted Brydson sacked him because he was trying to run Westerkirk professionally, and invest its money for the best possible return.
Lawson further claimed in his statement of claim that in 2006, Brydson used her bank signing authority on behalf of Westerkirk to withdrawn $106 million for personal expenses and investments without proper authorization.
Her share of equity interest in Westerkirk was subsequently lowered from 21.8% to 19.8% “to rectify this unauthorized appropriation of Westerkirk’s funds” by Brydson, the claim alleged.
Westerkirk officials told Brydson “her continued spending exceeded her personal cash means,” alleged Lawson.
He asserted his management clashed with the family’s wild spending and erratic style.
Brydson categorically denied Lawson’s allegation in court pleadings.
Lawson further alleged Brydson “demanded approximately $87 million from Westerkirk” so that she could buy a private jet in 2009. It was ultimately approved, but her equity interest in Westerkirk fell to 17.9% from 19.8%, his court filings documents claimed.
Brydson, in response, hired celebrated employment lawyer Howard Levitt, whose team investigated Lawson’s work at Westerkirk and launched a counter claim seeking $14 million in damages from Lawson.
Brydson’s lawyers alleged that Lawson exploited his Westerkirk position to enrich himself at the company’s expense, while “ridiculing various family members as irresponsible, clueless, stupid and lazy to colleagues, subordinates and third parties.”
Lawson had categorically denied those allegations in his statement of defence.
She also accused Lawson of making questionable real estate deals and downloading of hard core, offensive pornography. None of those allegations were proven in court and Lawson also denied those claims.
The counterclaim also alleges that Lawson received senior appointments to the Jockey Club and Woodbine — without the approval of Westerkirk or Brydson. He allegedly earned approximately $22,035 a month for several months in 2012 from Woodbine.
Lawson said he worked weekends and took no holidays to perform his Woodbine duties while still discharging his responsibilities at Westerkirk.
None of these allegations have been proved.

The best I can say about my Rider's performance so far is that they've somehow managed to hold the Stamps to a couple of FGs. Glenn sucks completing 6 of 12 so far. The defence goes from being a brick wall in one play to completely porous the next.

Kevin hurts his hand on his last successful but ultimately pointless completion of the first half as the time clock runs out and is holding it as he leaves the field.

Stamps lead 6 - 2

Riders are holding their ground and Calgary only thinks they are invincible. Winning this or the next will put us the eastern wildcard position. There is potential to end up in the Grey Cup.

Red Blacks are only 5-8 on the season but 1st in the East.

Yes, well they better change that 3-man rushing defence because Messam is walking through the holes they are leaving for him. I also agree with the panel who say that the Riders need to establish a running game, though I honestly don't see that happening against Cal's D.

I believe we will make it to the play-offs, pete - have for awhile but am still looking for a consistently good offense and defence from our guys.

Man, that hit that Naaman took had me sick to my stomach. He looked utterly lifeless out there for awhile. No one on the panel figured it was an intentional helmet to helmet hit though. I am on the sidelines with my opinion after watching the video review a few times. I don't think it was intentional - and Duron needs to muzzle his mouth.

Really snarky interview Jones gave the TSN guy on the sidelines - he needs to have better control of himself than that.

Ah great way to start the second half....................with a penalty. Sheesh

Glenn sacked for 2nd time in game

There goes Messam..........waltzing within a yard of 1rst down and follows that up with Yak yards on 2nd and 1. Yeah, Jones your defensive strategy is working sooo well. No wonder you are so damn snarky.

Well the Stamps aren't having any problem what-so-ever running the ball for down after down.

Yet again, Sask stops the Stamps from getting a major but give up another 3 points. That was Messam's drive all the way.

Well that is something, having denied the Stamps a major our back-up QB gets us the first TD of the game.

TD must have inspired the D as they sack Mitchell for a loss then stop the Stamps from getting a first down. Riders get the ball back down 15 - 9 with just over a minute to go in the 4th.

Riders look like they are done but wait.........

Jones using his challenge saying there was pass interference on Bagg and wins giving the Riders a really needed first down.

Brandon gets 4 yards on the ground himself then is sacked and fumbles the ball on the next play and the Stamps will walk away with the win having not a single TD in the game. We had a chance there, we really did, damn it.

Wait a minute, I thought TO was first in the East.........going to check that out, pete. The Argos are ahead by a point with a 5, 2 and 0 record. RBS are second at 4, 3 and 0. That is in virtue of the fact that TO won handily over the Als and the RBs were crushed by the Bombers this weekend.

The talk this week in Riderland and around the league will be about Brandon vs Glenn as starter against the RBs next week. I was not at all impressed with Glenn today and wonder if that injury to his hand which he first suffered in last week's game, is not worse than we are lead to believe.

Hey, that was a loss I can easily live with, it's still a stain on the Stamps stats.

We have but little choice, pete. I am quite happy that we stood up as well as we did against the Stamps and were it not for Paredes being on his game tonight, the score might have been a bit more in our favor.

If I don't see Brandon Bridge starting the 3rd Q of this game, I will take off my Rider T in absolute fury. KG was barely capable in the first half and was totally incapable when he threw that interception. The ground game - no shame on LaFrance who is doing the best he can, still sucks, everything we are putting out there is being read and read well by the defense.

Whoa............the TSN panel is with me 100% on Brandon replacing Kevin Glenn. We need to win this game.

Back to my critique................it's hard for me to judge our receivers considering how inaccurate many of Glenn's passes were or how, in taking so long to develop, they were fore-destined to fail.

Now for the defense which as William Powell (111 rushing yards in the 1rst half) ably demonstrated, sucks. They can't contain Lindley. They can't contain Powell. Sinopoli, Ellingson and Spencer - who managed to run through numerous Rider defenders as if he was covered in fairy dust - all made mincemeat of them. It was a sad thing to see considering how good they've shown themselves capable of being in past games.

Into the 3rd now and our defense.............still sucks.

3rd Q:

10:17 RBs TD

17 zip - denied the 2 pointer though

Chris Cuthbert commenting on shot of JOnes on the sidelines, "Chris Jones figuring things on defense."

Me: (screaming at the TV) You were supposed to have figured things out long before now. They call it a game plan. If that plan doesn't work then at half-time you go back to what has worked in the past - you DON'T stay the course when it goes off the rails.

6:57............the RBs are having their way with us.........all game long..............and looking at the guys on the field, I don't see a whole lot of enthusiasm..........mind you in a nod to the D .......they've spent a hell of a lot of time on the field tonight.

The only reason the RB's offense get off the field is because of an errant pass by Lindley or they get a FG

OMFG.............................Tristan Jones just thrilled every single Rider fan in the world.....with a 96 yard punt return to the end zone for a TD....and we are on the board.........hope indeed springs eternal.

RBS 11 - Riders 7

Now, we'll see if this puts some fire in the defense ..........and if Jones finally puts Brandon in as pivot.

RBs with a quick 2 and out

Kevin Glenn is still in the game/ LaFrance with 6/ KG misses his target on 2nd and 4/ there is definitely some disconnect between Kevin and his receivers tonight. Riders 2 and out

End of 3rd: RBs 17 - Riders 7

Geez........even Suitor is calling for Brandon to come
