Stinson: It's unclear Tiger-Cats learned anything from Briles incident
By Scott Stinson, Postmedia Network
First posted: Tuesday, August 29, 2017 09:10 PM EDT | Updated: Tuesday, August 29, 2017 09:16 PM EDT
HAMILTON — Among my e-mail correspondence today came this: “(Art) Briles had nothing to do with what went on at Baylor. Not one single thing.” It concluded that the CFL and people like me “will one day look like idiots.”
This is not a particularly surprising reaction from a reader to a story such as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ brief employment of the former Baylor University football coach, fraught as it is with allegations that have not been tested in court.
What is surprising is that the Ticats still seem to feel that way themselves.
Head coach June Jones spoke to a group of reporters at Tim Hortons Field on Tuesday, when he was originally supposed to be introducing Briles as his new assistant coach, before that idea was squelched by a 12-hour blast of controversy.
Jones, a former NFL and U.S. college coach who was given the Hamilton job late last week, said he and Briles have been friends for 40 years. Jones said he was about “helping people.” And he said that this — the hiring and forced un-hiring — “was really an emotional thing for me.”
And then he said he didn’t want to talk anymore about it. Football questions only, please.
Jones had decided to name a new starting quarterback. No one cared. It takes some doing to get a bunch of media members to be unconcerned with a quarterback controversy.
Asked if he thought Briles — who was fired by Baylor last year when an independent review by a law firm found his football program had, among other things, failed “to identify and respond to a pattern of sexual violence by a football player” and “failed to take appropriate action” in response to reports of a gang rape carried out by players on his team — had been treated unfairly, Jones stopped short of saying yes, but only just.
“I have my own opinion on the whole thing, but it’s meaningless right now,” Jones said. But he was happy to talk football. There was, notably, not one attempt to apologize for the initial decision to hire Briles.
This came a few hours after Tiger-Cats chief executive Scott Mitchell did some media rounds on Tuesday, and was contrite, but only to a point.
Speaking to Toronto’s Sportsnet 590 radio station, he said the Ticats “underestimated the tsunami of negativity that was going to happen” as a result of the hiring. Later, speaking to reporters at Tim Hortons Field, Mitchell said they reversed course on Briles when it became clear that “what was being contemplated was totally unacceptable to the general public.” And also to “the media.”
After saying again that the public found it unacceptable, Mitchell allowed that “it was a poor decision that shouldn’t have been made.”
Again, no apology. Only Tiger-Cats owner Bob Young offered one of those, saying in a prepared statement, “We want to apologize to our fans, corporate partners and the Canadian Football League.”
So, in summation, the Tiger-Cats are sorry for making a decision to hire someone who left his last job in the middle of a huge sexual assault scandal because they didn’t realize the public would be quite so outraged about it.
This remains an utterly baffling explanation for what happened.
Aside from being “football myopic,” which Mitchell also copped to, the decision to bring in Briles only starts to make a bit of sense if you squint at it a certain way: if Hamilton management believes that he had been unfairly railroaded at Baylor.
There’s certainly evidence that this is what they were thinking.
After acknowledging that the “circumstances of what happened down there are horrific,” Mitchell said, “I think it will play itself out as to what responsibility, specifically, Art Briles had.” In his earlier radio comments, Mitchell said “there’s the truth about what happened, and there’s what is out there in the media.” Coupled with Jones’ “own opinion on the whole thing,” the conclusion looks like the team thought that Briles was some sort of scapegoat, and so they, and his old friend, threw him a lifeline.
And this is where it is fair to wonder if Ticats management has learned anything here, other than that news does, in fact, travel across international borders.
Art Briles isn’t in football exile because he made a couple of dumb mistakes. He was, at the very least, at the head of a football program that did not take certain accusations of sexual violence seriously, and allegedly much worse than that.
Head football coaches at big U.S. schools are all powerful, usually paid more than school presidents and often much more than any other public servant in their state. And while this scandal was unfolding in his program, over many years, Briles was, in his estimation, an unwitting rube.
It’s not that Briles doesn’t deserve a second chance because the public will be angry, it’s that public was right to be angry. The Tiger-Cats had no business offering someone image rehabilitation just because they made his pal head coach five days ago.
It is odd that the Hamilton front office remains unclear on that. This will play itself out, but quite possibly not in the way Scott Mitchell imagines.

Pete, I'm beginning to believe these guys are the 'real deal' and that we just might have a legitimate run at the play-offs. Of course, there is an entire second half of ball to play and the Hoovers aren't slouches - Matt is top of the list of QBs in the CFL and Mike O'Shea is known for coming up with some really nifty play calls. Still, the Riders in these last few games have proven their worth to me and given me loads of hope for the rest of the season. And, I give Chris Jones full credit for turning things around. Plus, he has a legitimate reason for wearing his shades today. LOL!

I must add Kevin Glenn to the list of people I give credit too especially as he has proved me wrong about his ability to lead this team. He just went over 300 yards in this game and we're still in the 3rd Q.

I love this. Will be one of the first things I will want to see on my next visit to Regina. I vividly remember the days of Ron and George. They have a very special place in my heart.

Unless I read my standings wrong, Saskatchewan is now tied for 4th in the west which will be good enough for a trip east in the playoffs. Not sure how the Riders fare for tiebreakers with BC.

You read them right, IRBS. We are tied with BC but ahead of them by virtue of winning 1 more game then the Lions. Sask 5 - 4/ BC 5- 5. Looking pretty darn good for the rest of the season so far.

Long-suffering Ti-Cat fans finally had reason to celebrate tonight as their Cats won their first game of the year beating the Toronto Argonauts in a game that saw a 2-hour rain delay and even at that it was a nail-biter to the end. But after the longest game in Labor Day history the Cats prevailed. Final 24 - 22.

Boo.

Now the #1 team in the east has a worse record than the #5 team in the west. The CFL should do like the NFL. Division winners get in and next 4 in as wildcards. Right now the #4 team will head east as road team to play a team that has a worse record and then go on the road again to face another team (which had a bye) also with a worse record.

The 2017 edition of the Banjo Bowl will get underway at noon today on TSN 2 and 3. The game was sold out almost as soon as the ref blew his whistle to end the Labor Day game last week with the Riders walking away victorious. Looking forward to a great game. May the best team on the field today win with as little interference from the refs as humanely possible.

End of 1rst half: Bombers 29 - Riders 20

I don't know how this game will end but have a feeling it could go down to the wire today. Some really great football being played out there by both teams. Bomber fans are loud and proud - especially now that the fans who were stopped on the highway by a moose that wouldn't move until the RCMP and Conservation officers were able to get it off and fans on their way to the stadium. You can't make this stuff up.

Riders are not helping themselves with the penalties they are taking. Grant it that the involuntary interference call was a heart-breaker as it lead to a the last Bomber TD of the 2nd Q - though it took them 14 plays until they finally crossed the goal line. Chris has to read the guys the riot act about penalties especially as this CFL reffing crew gives out more off-sides than any other and Sask has been hit with way too many already.
GO RIDERS.................ROCK THE FIELD GUYS!

Boo, eh IRBS. Well I'm happy for the fans and the players who had absolutely nothing to do with the hiring of that American coach. They deserve this victory and I'm truly happy they finally have something to celebrate.

The Ticats are my least liked team and the Argos are my #2. Thus the Boo. Don't really care who they hire as coach.

Well we lost to the Bombers by a lot of points, didn't bother to catch the final score. We lost because we forgot everything we did right last week. Grant it that the Bombers definitely brought their A game to the field and Matt Nichols was spot on most of the game. Discipline and some sketchy play-calling, an unchallenged PI along with poor performances from STs and our D added up to a pretty easy win for the Bombers.

The Ti-Cats on the other hand appear to be energized under their new HC. They lead 10 - zip late in the 1rst Q
