Absolutely, and servicing the debt and flying politicians are annual expenses of larger proportions!

I don't understand why you're mixing this issue into other independent issues.

If you are interested in politician's travel habits; then vote for a party that wants to work from home. If it's debt you're worried about - the CBC is adding 2 billion annually to that tally

Essential service????? Even if you have access to Internet ??? Where does this stuff come from???

I don't know. I can live without radio myself, and have never lived in a particularly isolated area. Personally, I'd say scrap publicly-funded English and French radio altogether. But maybe JLM could enlighten us on this since I'd rather not assume radio is expendable without knowing what I'm talking about.

You mentioned $2 billion and I'm just pointing out that it is possibly a better use of $2 billion than other endeavours currently eating up the money. You should look at how many thousands of people if not millions benefit from that $2 billion!

For information, it's hard to beat the radio and it's only demanding on one of your senses, hence the ability to multi task while listening to the radio, but not so easy to do watching T.V.

Thanks for the info. I guess especially in isolated areas especially if it provides wheatehr information or danger warnings and such, then it might be more of an essential service. Of course there is a high bar to determine what is an essential service, but maybe you can fill us out on that.

I guess what we consider "essential" today would make our fathers and forefathers puke. I would rate ability to communicate and keep abreast of domestic and world events would be highly desirable. I guess essential in the strict sense would be air, water, food, clothing and shelter. Having said that, what kind of life would it be with only those amenities?

In the modern world, I'd include education too.

Your not very smart are you? Kinda a real dumbo!!

I was saying that the Government would tender a broadcasting service to isolated areas in the north, and then pay the selected broadcaster his tendered fee for the service. No need to only give it to CBC..
Man your dumb!!

What is this I see- your pleasant side perhaps?

As for the others though, yes they can be beneficial, but not that the private sector could not help there.

For instance, art is indeed essential to an enjoyable life, but not something the government needs to guarantee to any individual. Certianly the private sector could help there.

What the hell does the CBC have in programming worth watching, let alone whining about?

Apart from Coach's Corner of course.
