The government is not stupid at all. The thing is that such substances as marijuana and most psychedelics expand people's consciousnes and make them see things in a new light and think, really think for themselves. <snip>quote]

Whoa ... that remark probably requires a link before it can be stated as fact. My observations are that people that use drugs lose their life drive and ambition. They are satisfied with going to a menial job, getting a little money and making themselves stupid with drugs. Analytical thinking is usually severely compromised. People on drugs have difficulty following directions and when they can't follow directions, they think it's funny. Long term drug users are fixated on the past ... ever met a 40 year old that is still talking/complaining about something that happened in high school and 10, 20 years ago? Drugs do that. Drugs cause people to lose their train of thought mid-sentence and generally speaking ... there is no expanded consciousness or new light, it's just a blanket of dullness that bores most people so much that they move on.

I think it is true that people on drugs are deluded and believe that their consciousness has expanded, but in reality it's nothing more than a confused illusion. They think for themselves in circles ... around and around and around.

You're right to a point. I know people just like you describe. People who had so much potential to succeed in high school and now, 20 odd years later, are still pretty much in the same place they were in at the time. They sit around in rooms smoking their dope and talk about how bad the world is, but what exactly are they doing about it? Lighting another joint...

I can't say I know much about the stronger drugs, seeing as I've only smoked pot, and very low-grade pot at that. However, as a person who has a bit of shamanic experience I can understand how some, high-quality and non-toxic hallucinogens can be bennificial when doing a journey. The thing about those drugs (and I'm just saying what I know, by no means are these facts) is that they alter your conciousness to a point where it brings out your subconcious thougths and feelings and allows you to view and interpret them in a concious light. The whole point of meditation and journeying, beyond the relaxation, is to discover more about what we already know and draw realistic and personal conclusions from those discoveries, which in turn allows us to grow into a more rounded person. It's possible to create the high without the drugs, once you know how. The problem is learning how to do that, and that's where the drugs often come in - they're an easy way out.

Vereya- Excellent post (the "govt is NOT stupid" one)

I agree to a large extent- and rather than get into difficult-to-prove stuff, you could even stick to plain ol facts- the government has made pot a boogeyman, like satan for christians- forget about the facts (and I do believe they are facts, no link to back that up) that it DOES force people to think, as you so eloquently stated...

IF the government suddenly deflated that boogeyman, I think it would cause at least SOME of the "non-questioning" folks (and keep in mind no-one actually has to partake of marijuana to go through this) to wonder what OTHER "boogeymen" are in fact bogus, as well...

So yes, at this point it becomes similar to the current situation with our involvement in Afghanistan (not trying to start that here, but as reference) if we were to suddenly leave, then ALL of the crap that's been handed out as "reasons" would be exposed to the harsh light of day- even if our position is untenable, it's better to carry on or the whole ruse would have to be exposed

that being said, I am 100% agreed on your "psychological" explanation as well- I know certain things became a LOT less hard and fast for me, and it really made me redefine (and in some cases abandon altogether) the concept of "face value"

it surprises me that old people still do it. it f*cks your head up you know. that explains allot about the older generation and why we have so much problems in canada.youd think getting older would make you more responsible.

Well, I wouldn't blame the problems of the world on dope smokers......they're just too laid back to take over. :)

But you are right, dope smoking can "f*ck up the head".......and you would be better off simply to avoid it.............that is a wise decision.

But people do a lot of things that are not good for them.......smoke, drink, drive fast, jay walk, have lots of sex partners.........and in a free world we all make different choices, and live with different consequences.

As well as people like Dark Beaver who require THC to fight their pain..........I wouldn't deny him.

And exactly WHO is old here? :)

Please don't take this the wrong way, I appreciate your sentiment regarding my medicinal requirements, but your overall support of American forigne policy may be counterproductive in this respect.

Well, before we start the discussion in this direction, let us agree on the terms we use. :) Just what exactly substances do you mean when you say "drugs"? There exists a lot of mind-altering substances, some of which can be beneficial, and some - harmful. I will absolutely agree with every word you have said, when it comes to opiates, dissociatives, stimulants and this kind of substances. These kinds, indeed, are mostly harm, and they do turn people into what you have described.
But I will set psychedelic substances aside from the others, because... well, see the post above :)
By the way, do you, personally, have experience with substances?

There's no room in my profession for substance abuse. I do, however, have friends that I have known for more than 20 years that do have problems with substance abuse and my observations are based on my interactions with those people. Everything from pot to cocaine and worse, from what I've seen, gives people the impression that they are attaining some higher level of consciousness but from the outside looking in, they're babbling fools. When they come out of their drug induced stupor, they are no more enlightened than before they entered it.

If people want to smoke pot, I say go ahead ... medicinal, recreational or whatever the reason ... I'm in no position to tell other people what to do with themselves. Meth is another story ... so are the other hard drugs. They lead to violence, desperation, loss of livlihood and a type of self induced mental illness.

............ Um, I can point to a couple put smokers who aren't exactly what I'd call Mensamaterial; in fact they'd be more like fair-weather "friends" from Flatearth Society.

........But if you approach them in the right way, after the right kind of preparation, they can really help you improve, expand and grow............
You mean like I did in '68 when the big preparation was on to pop acid and go see "2001: A Space Odyssey"? Yeah, that preparation has almost become as a religious rite with me: put on clean jeans, clean t-shirt, brush teefs and hair, maybe add a molecule or two if nice odor and go to see the movie. :D

it's not about making you cleverer. it's about opening your mind to more ideas. It releases the filter in your brain that says "don't think about that, it's not worth it" which is why u do get some pretty funny ideas sometimes, but it can be worth it because u learn how to think outside the box, this lesson can then be applied in everyday life, with amazing results. if you were stupid in the first place, of course, you might not pick up on it, especially if u smoked so much u passed out and woke up with your face stuck to a table

Yup, that's me to a "t". :D

Actually you have a point. However, I think it depends on quantity, quality, and frequency of usage. The whole thing about drugs of any kind is recreational and not habitual. Specifically in my 53 years I've popped acid 4 times, puffed on 3 joints, maybe smoked a gram of hash in toto, puffed on opium 3 times, etc. (What can I say, I am filled with curiosity).

Fairweather indeed. They're too stoned to think that time matters so they show up one and a half hours late for dinner and don't comprehend that it could make a difference. They discuss all sorts of ideas, make big plans and promises but have no recollection of the discussion the following day. Flat earthers ... "do you think the moon landing was all a hoax?"

again, it's possible to be responsible and still smoke weed. I've never showed up late for anything because of weed. I suspect people who do are using it as an excuse. anyway i've known people who arent on drugs to be like that. I hate unpunctuality, i find it incredibly rude

Yeah, I know what you mean, for about a half hour I kept an eye on a fella that was high on pot. Just sat on the couch watching a little ball bounce up and down on the coffee table and giggled once in a while. I can bet that he experienced myriads of remarkable, enlightening revelations about bouncing balls. When he wasn't high later on, I asked him what was so fascinating about the bouncing ball he couldn't remember.

More people die from ice-cream addiction in one year than have died from pot-addiction in all of history. Chocolate cake is a killer, roast beef and gravy should be outlawed, soft drinks are lethal.:laughing7::laughing7::wave:
