Environmental issues are taking up a lot more space in people‘s minds and the Cons’ promise to scrap the carbon tax with nothing but vagueness to replace it with was interpreted as being soft on environmental reform, something they have a reputation for. Add to that the rest of their platform consisted only of “Let’s get Trudeau” and there wasn’t much left to vote for. The party faithful brought them close, but right wing politics took a beating with the Trump presidency. O’Toole sees the distinction in getting people to vote
for the Conservatives as well as
against the Liberals, and sees taking the party closer to centre as the ticket to power.
