Several pedestrians have been injured after a car hit people near the Natural History Museum in London, police say.

The Metropolitan Police said one person had been detained following the incident in Exhibition Road in South Kensington.

A BBC reporter at the scene said she had been told by police the injuries were minor.

Police said inquiries are under way to establish the circumstances and any motive.

A Downing Street spokesman said the prime minister is "being kept up to date on events".

BBC reporter Chloe Hayward was leaving the Natural History Museum as the incident happened.

"I could see a car diagonally across the road, looking like it was going into one of the boulders on the side of the road, and I could see a crowd of people around what was clearly one or two people on the pavement," she said.

She added there were now armed police at the scene.

"We have had lots of police coming onto the scene, helicopters above, and I can see an ambulance which is definitely having someone put in, but it isn't clear how bad that injury is."

An eyewitness who was walking to the Science Museum on the same street, said: "When waiting for the light, we heard what I thought was gunshots and saw a car drive over the pavement.

We just ran. My friend dived on the floor and cut her hands."

The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "When it calmed down we walked back to where we'd been and saw a gentleman on the floor being restrained by police."

Connor Honeyman, from Essex, who was in the queue for the museum, said: "We heard a horrible thudding noise and a car engine. Everyone started running and screaming inside.

"We ran in, everyone was following us, and then all the security guards ran out and they closed the main entrance.

There was much confusion before the police got there."

No surprise since so many of you insist on driving on the wrong side of the road.
Terrorism is nothing to laugh about . Our children and grandchildren will have to learn to live with it like Parisians and Londoners if we don't wake up .

Perhaps if the west stopped bombing the hell out of the muddled east there would be no more "terrorism". But, as the former head of the CIA said, most domestic terrorism is orchestrated by the CIA and the FBI. In England, that would translate as MI5 and MI6. The US and England are the biggest terrorist organizations on the planet. If our children do not want to live with terrorism they will have to topple those governments because their parents don't have the balls.

It’s the new norm for the terrorists, run into a crowd with a vehicle, make sure you leave your isis flag at home, and when you get caught, just say, shucks, I lost control of my driving.

Why don't you go fukk yourself. It is idiots like you that make living here a pain in the ass. You are just a dumb ass sheeple.

Thankfully, the incident was not terrorism and was just a road traffic accident:

Natural History Museum crash: Eyewitnesses sought by police

BBC News
8 October 2017

The crash happened on Exhibition Road, in London's South Kensington (@StefanoSutter)

Police are appealing for witnesses after 11 people were injured in a crash at London's Natural History Museum.

A black Toyota Prius hit people outside the museum, in South Kensington, at about 14:20 BST on Saturday, sparking initial fears it was a terror attack.

But police later said the incident was not "terrorist-related" and is being treated as a road traffic collision.

A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and none of the injuries are life-threatening.

The Metropolitan Police said the man had been arrested at the scene and initially received hospital treatment.

He was later taken to a north London police station for questioning.

London Ambulance Service said the people it treated - including the suspected driver - had mostly sustained head and leg injuries. Nine were taken to hospital.

The Met said none of the injuries were believed to be life changing and the majority of those hurt had been discharged by Saturday night.

Saturday's incident on Exhibition Road - coming so soon after vehicles were used in the Westminster, London Bridge and Finsbury Park terror attacks - initially sparked panic at the museum, an area that is popular with families and tourists.

Armed police were deployed and video footage quickly emerged showing a man, believed to be the driver, being restrained on the ground.

However, the Met later said its inquiry was "entirely a road traffic investigation".

Det Cons Darren Case, from the force's roads and transport team, said he appreciated "the concern and alarm this incident caused".

"Enquiries have established that this incident is not terrorist related and I'd like to thank those who came to assist the injured," he said.

As well as the Natural History Museum, the area is also home to the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Prime Minister Theresa May tweeted her thanks to first responders and members of the public, adding: "My thoughts are with the injured."

London Mayor Sadiq Khan also tweeted his thanks and hopes for a "swift recovery" for those injured.

"For Londoners and visitors planning to visit our excellent museums and attractions in the area, please be assured they will be open as usual tomorrow."

The fiance of singer Pixie Lott, Oliver Cheshire, was one of those who held down the driver of the car involved in the incident.

He later tweeted:

The current terror threat in the UK is at "severe" - the second highest level - meaning an attack is highly likely.

Police say anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 020 8543 5157.
