Actually I didn't read Chris Sligh's advice. I don't really know him. My knowledge of music has some big gaps, not to mention my knowledge of Idol.
I read your friend's article, and the one she was responding to (though I didn't read her original article). Interesting stuff. Which point of view do you agree with more, SleepinIn?
Unrelated question: When do the Emmys come on, anyway? (I hate awards shows.)
ETA: About Kara. None of the people on the panel are good judges, in my opinion.
At least not in the Top 12 episodes. They're more like critics. I suppose this is because once the Top 12 is chosen the judges are really no longer of any importance. So instead of being able to decide who will move on, they try to influence our vote with their critiques, and manipulate the competition to reflect their agenda(s). Rather than actually offer expert professional judgements of performances based on technique, etc.
I don't know why, but somehow I thought they were adding a fourth judge in order to represent a kind of departure from this formula. That Kara would be the judge who would be kind of the "articulate music industry expert" -- and maybe have no agenda, and be neutral and sort of above the fray. I based that assumption on this: having seen the other three operate, occasionally, over the years, I just figured TPTB would add someone who would be really different from them. Else, why bother adding anyone?
The fact was that she was like a slightly less ditzy Paula, and a slightly less shallow Randy. And she didn't seem any brighter or more insightful than them because she wasn't too articulate, herself. So you had a panel of three useless judges and Simon. I don't happen to think he's all that great, either. But I think he tries hard to surround himself with people who come across like those three, so that he'll look like some kind of genius in comparison. How else can you explain that in the whole music industry they can't find better judges than Randy, Paula, and Kara?
But I was never against her and I did think she deserved a chance. She actually seems like a nice person, so I didn't like to see her get bashed. And I'm willing to give her another chance.
