Canada's Mounties allow women in uniform to wear hijabs

They have lowered the bar. Letting turbans in was the first mistake. Now hijabs in a lame attempt to let some foreigner feel "included". On our jobsites we require certain attire. Granted it is for safety reasons but if you don't have all the necessary equipment and pass a D&A test you don't get in. Simple. There are no exceptions because of someone's beliefs or traditions.I don't see where government agencies should be any different.
SHould fire departments lower their criteria to make it easier for members of certain groups to join?
So, still not one single performance issue or standard that is in any way affected by hijab or turbans with the uniform? Oh dear, how embarrassing for you.

Still, keep throwing around BS about safety gear and telling yourself you're not a bigot. Here's a hint: calling anybody who is of a different religion or culture than you a "foreigner" don't help. It's pretty much like wearing a sign that says "I'm a bigot!"

I'll admit that I just skimmed through this thread.

My first though as I read the title to this thread is, "Oh great,
now they're combining a gun & a mask."

As I skimmed I see others have posted pic's of masked
SWAT members, etc....These people are not going to be
involved in day to day interactions with the everyday public
being SWAT.

Those wearing the Hijab hiding their face (& their identities) &
carrying a gun are going to be involved in everyday public
interactions from domestic dispute interventions to traffic
stops.

I don't like this, & it has nothing to do with racial and/or ethnic
origins, and everything to do with culture. Not Muslim culture
either, but police culture. I don't think police, in day to day
interactions with the public, should carry a gun while hiding
their faces.

Hijab doesn't hide the face.

Of course not. Perish the thought!

Sigh. OK, primer for the ignorant. . .

Oh, my bad. I mistook the Hijab for one of the other cultural ninja mask
type things. As long as the face isn't hidden, I'm good with it. Once the
face is hidden, I'm not. Thank you for pointing this out.

I believe a badge & a gun & a mask would make a horrible combination.

Northern Ontario,
My question is, when you tell your growing child, If you're lost or in trouble find a policeman/woman to help you

How do you point out a police person as an example if they have several mode of dress?

It actually happened when my son was young....
When I called the police about a lost child, they said "He's riding around in one of our cars trying to find your house, what is your address sir?

Good enough. The face-covering thing is called "niqab," and I agree police shouldn't be allowed to wear it, for the reasons you stated.

Though, mind, I've seen a good few cops whose appearance and professionalism could only be improved by a face covering. Or a burqa. Or a circus tent.

Depends on which criteria. Doesn't matter where the safety and performance of the job isn't affected or if confusion isn't caused.

I think commissioner Paulson is trying to make a difference
I realize this may be my delusions speaking rather then my limited knowledge
I will run with it

The RCMP has always had low misguided criteria

Maybe one conspicuous identifying feature would do the trick. A big picture of a doughnut on the front of his hat?
