Ahhh Canuck... My friend, my poor, misguided union friend.

I take no pleasure or solace in articulating these realities to you... I am doing this such that you can fully prepare for the drastic changes that will be affecting you and your union brethren in the immediate future.

It's obvious that you are going through the 5 stages of grief here... Denial, anger, bargaining with depression and acceptance only a short time away.

You will be able to get on with your life much faster provided that you don't dote on the initial stages... Time to move on my friend..... Time to move on

I doubt it. When it comes to public finances, the Tories seem to be quite befuddled.

Actually, it hasn't. Politician flap their gums all the time.

Sure they could. I'm sure it would make crybabies like you happy.

Why would the union do that when the em[ployer is quite willing to do it.

Do you think STDI or sick leave is only given to union people or public servants?

From the Globe- A Liberal Paper. Not always but usually.

The change will come for me soon enough as I plan on a career change in the not so distant future. As for the union I belong to, not likely. The employer is quite happy with the status quo. It saves them a bundle every year.

You seem to think these benefits only help the worker and only come to public servants and union people. That's funny considering the best benefit package I ever had was with Suntory. Why do you think a successful private company would offer a generous benefit package given how bad you think it is. Maybe you can call up Suntory and give them your point of view. They may give you a position in their HR department.

LOL..did you read the story? One paragraph they are saying how lavish it is and the next says the workers are getting screwed. Never did have much use for the Globe.

I don't recall Clement stating that most private sector employers have short term disability for their employees

From Minister Clement to Modernize Disability Management in the Public Service
The Government is looking forward to working with stakeholders and bargaining
agents to introduce, for the first time, a short-term disability program to
support employees through illness. Approximately 87% of Canadian employers
provide short-term disability insurance, making the federal government one of
the few large employers that does not offer coverage for short-term illness

The Toronto Star reported a story about the federal Tories crackdown on government employees abusing their sick days. One might think that there would widespread support for this initiative. Not amongst readers of the Star:
Trying to deflect the focus from the messes & corruption that the Conservatives can't seem to make go away these days by going after the workers won't work this time. It will have a direct effect on the morale of those workers and that might effect how well services we tax payers need get done. Clean up your own house first.

This is nothing more than using a wedge issue to deflect from the senate scandal. ooooh people hate unions, let's make them the enemy. Please people, don't let this idiocy allow the senate scandal to take a back seat. Don't allow them to manipulate you and prove them right in thinking we're so stupid.
The Leftists in our country will stop at nothing to support their public sector comrades. Is there not one thing a government employee could do that would offend these folks?

The star is still mad about losing the whole Rob Ford 'scandal' thing I suppose.
Yeah, huh? No rightie scandals have ever been heard of, so righties have good cause to scoff at lefties.

Im fine with the government reducing sick days and cutting benefits to public sector workers so long as they put the same restrictions on themselves as well as all MPs and Senators.

There may be too many big words in that link for CM and that is what is causing his confusion on this issue.

I'd bet real money that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

The federal conservatives are in bed with the last communist super power on the planet.

CNOOC-Nexen deal: Chinese firm closes $15.1-billion acquistion | Energy | News | Financial Post

The contentious $15.1-billion takeover of Canadian oil and gas company Nexen Inc. by Chinese state-owned entity CNOOC Ltd closed on Monday, more than seven months after China’s largest-ever foreign takeover was announced.

Nexen, based in Calgary, Alberta, said in a statement on Monday that the deal had closed and its shareholders would receive $27.50 in cash for each Nexen share.

Nexen said its common and preferred shares would be delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange in a few days, while its common shares were expected to cease trading on the New York Stock Exchange prior to the market opening on Feb. 26.

The company said Kevin Reinhart would remain chief executive of Nexen, which will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of CNOOC.

But you're telling us the big threat is people standing up for workers rights here?

We probably won't have to worry much longer, those of us who aren't told where to go work, can lose our jobs to cheaper foreign workers being brought in.

The problem for the Conservatives is the mess is sweeping ever closer to the PMs door.
they have to find a wade to stop the tide from rising. On the other hand the media in
general is against Harper now for the slights and insults of the past. Face it the media
knows there is more to this saga and they smell blood. Happened to Paul Martin and it
has happened in the past.
there is an eighteen month window in which all that is done must be made right before
an election if not there can be all kinds of problems. This government is going to see more
and more come out before the window closes. I still believe Harper will be part of history
by the time the election comes round.

It's a leftie newspaper whose readers are all gvt employees and unions.... Of course they will be supporting some mythical right for 60 or 70 paid sick days and assume that they are simply paid holidays

Seriously, you can do better then that.

A simpleton in my opinion is a person who only reads one paper and takes what is says as fact. Every Toronto paper has a bias, take each with a grain of salt and you can come to an informed decision instead of just labeling information as right/left.

So do I. They have given themselves a few pay cuts over the last couple years. Not enough to make some sort of difference though.

I don't think Harper has the right to crack down on anyone for corruption except those in his own party. He is buried so deep in scandals I think he has lost the moral authority to govern.

Yeah, lol, pay cuts....then a quick shhhh quiet pay raise right before adjourning for summer. Isn't it shocking how there is never a partisan issue when it comes to their monetary compensation? When it's time to vote on a 3% pay hike, they're all symbiotic all of a sudden.
