Right time, right place.

How so? If the economy is booming, then now is the time to raise taxes, reduce spending, or a combination of the two to bring inflation under control proactively before it happens.

The borrow and spend has done its work, now let the market take care of itself.

I wouldn't give the government too much credit.

It's more right time, right place.

Exogenous factors such as the lowered American dollar and the bump in oil.

As for inflation, sure why not.

Let's make it a carbon tax so it's also good for the environment.

hmmm... The whole point of borrow and spend was to prime the economy. Are you saying Trudeau was wrong in believing that?

If it has no bearing, then he borrowed and spent for nothing since according to you, the same would have happened under Harper with much lower spending. Though Harper was a xenophobe whereas Trudeau is at least nominally more open. But then we're diverging from economics to human rights.

But on the economic front, you seem to be saying Harper could have achieved the same without raising the debt because the economy does not respond to government spending.

Now, if the economy does not respond to government policies, then how do you explain the differences between West and East Germany at the time, or South and North Korea, or Mainland China and Hong Kong and Singapore? You can't blame it on culture since they belong to the same ethnic groups.

Now that would make sense. It would promote greener development and pay off the debt at the same time.

Oh but wait, you say government policy does not affect the economy. Now I'm confused.

Any money that goes into the gubberments coffers, robs me of my ability to save up for an electric car.

But the government's got a MASSIVE debt to pay off. Now I agree the government needs to reduce spending and make deep expenditure cuts. But even with that, our debt is massive right now.

And that's why we need to get the debt under control. If we don't, then we'll need to raise taxes and that affects people directly. I don't see how you can believe that government policy does not affect people and the economy.

Didn't you say that we can't thank the government for the booming economy? While I acknowledge that many factors play a role and not all falls at the government's feet, common sense dictates that at least in the short term, borrow and spend can grow an economy. The Liberal party might as well take credit for this now because when the party's over, it'll have to take credit for that too.

Carbon taxes are to scare you into thinking AGW is real.

Or you can make hay while the sun is shining invest in doubling your next hay crop and have more product to sell when it's raining.

I'd prefer taxes to debt myself.

We've just come through a 7 year period when debt hasn't been so bad, but it's at an end as interest rates are starting to drift "northward". If the economy is in as great shape as they say, then we should be using every spare dollar to knock down debt. Don't forget 1983 when interest rates were at 20%. We don't know right now how far in the future a recurrence is lurking! :)

If the government invests that debt. Is it? Part of it maybe, but certainly not all of it.

Ob look its a flash in the pan of economic success. Lets hope it doesn't die out with the 30 billion we spend we didn't have.
