That is assuming that the NDP, Lib and Bloq triumvirate seizes control of the Federal Government of Canada.

Whether or not the GG Michelle Jean will approve it has been discussed on other threads.
I believe she will.
And at a stroke Canada will cease to be a Democracy by definition.
It will be legal and it will be constitutionally permitted but make no mistake we will cease to be a Democracy.

The definition of a Democracy is as follows.
Quote: online dictionary
“Democracy is a form of government in which power is held by people under a free electoral system.”
Quote: Webster’s
“1 a: government by the people ; especially : rule of the majority b: a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections”

In the context of this forum I don't think you can go to Webster's dictionary for definitions, as the dictionary is written for the layman (general publc) and just defines words in general terms. Among Harper, Layton, Dion and Duceppe I'd bet you'd find four "definitions" of democracy.

JLM,

No doubt about the definitions, but IMO, something must get the train going again.

Democracy will remain alive and well.

Just an observation.

JLM, a coalition of the majority of those elected in the last election fits your definition perfectly, I don't know what the problem is nor how you could cease to grasp that fact for SO long and after so many repetitions

Yes, I agree, Canada is no longer a democracy. For at least next two months (more if he can help it) we have a dictator, Fidel Harper who does not have the support, confidence of the Parliament.

Canada will cease to be a Democracy by definition???

What are you talking about, just because we have a coalition goverment does not mean we are not a Democracy, it means that we are so screwed up that we cannot make up our minds. We do however whine and cry allot about how bad our goverment is but we all are doing pretty good aren't we. My solution is stop whining and look at what is happening in other countries around us. We are doing just fine.

Malcome, we have a PM who does not have the support of the Parliament. That is the definition of dictatorship. In a dictatorship, nobody has to support the dictator, he rules on his own.

For the next two months, we will have a PM who governs without the confidence of the Parliament. To me, that is same as dictatorship.

Malcome, what the HELL do other countries have to do with our federal political situation??

Should I be GLAD that democracy is suspended cos at least we aren't in Iraq being bombed to the stone age by the US??

That's like telling someone who's house is burning down to not do anything and just be happy for what they had since somewhere there's starving people

"we are doing just fine" RIGHT, sounds like the tune Harper and his crew have been fiddling while Rme burns down around them

Since I had that happen to me, if someone came up to me and told me that, I'd probably black out and beat them from an inch of their life with the closest blunt object I could find.

I think of it along the lines of Bush's "Stay the Course.... we'll find them WMD soon enough."

Mabodon, maybe that is going to be Fidel’s next argument for suspending the democracy. Should we look forward to declaration of emergency so that Fidel can stay in power (PM for life)?
