"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all."
A very idealistic statement but too bad it is not the reality of the situation. Equality and justice for those who can afford it may be more correct.

Politicians are beholden to those that finance them and are swayed by those that have their ear 365 days per year. Special interest groups hold the power and elections are an illusion of democracy...at least at the national level. Democracy still can exist in local politics.

on the democracy index Canada is 11th the U.S.A 18th Canada is more democractic than the U.S.A

And who derived that index? I think it's full of b.s. In the U.S. if someone harms you he could wind up in the electric chair, in Canada if someone harms you, he might get a stiff curfew.

i was undert the impression in america you can say the most evil things in the world without retaliation from the law, but in canada you have to watch what you say cause some things can land you in jail... is this true?

That may just prove my point- U.S. has freedom of speech, which I agree with as long as no one is being maligned.

Did you know no-where in the U.S. constitution are there the words democracy, republic is used, but not democracy!
We have representation by population where as the U.S. does not!

'A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.'

A more important question is whether Canada is more just than the USA.

Imagine a democracy in which the will of the people is to disregard treaties, to give special status to certain religions without making their intentions explicit, etc., vs. a dictatorship that honours treaties, makes its religious policies explicit for all to see, with no hidden agendas, etc. Which would you prefer to live under?

Certainly we might prefer a democracy in principle. But what happens if it merely degenerates into mob rule. Then it is no better than a dictatorship anyway, and even worse than a just dictatorship.

The operative word is CAN. And that's the way it should be if you make public unsubstantiated statements about a person maligning them. This would only apply to private citizens, not politicians (who are scumbags anyway:lol::lol::lol::lol:)

Basketball .....? an idea was given by a Canadian to Americans in America .The game was developed by the Americans in America .Now the big question is why the Canadian did not give the idea of the game to the Canadians .....in Canada.
Rest my case.
Hockey .......?
The game of hockey was played in Holland on the canals before there was Canada .
Canada invented the NHL and the brutal part of the game .
But there is something truly Canadian ...........The Maple Syrup .

That's "thoughtful", and it requires a brain......which means you are obviously unqualified.

1. The United States House of Representatives is elected every TWO years.......as opposed to the House of Commons, which is elected every 5 years or earlier, usually at the whim of the PM.

2. A representative in the US House is not bound by Party discipline, he votes as his conscience and/or his constituents dictate, often against his party's wishes. In Canada, party discipline in the House accounts for all, MPs that vote against the party are severely punished.....a good majority gov't is, in effect, a five-year dictatorship by the PM

3. In Canada, much of our law is passed through Order in Council, which never sees Parliament......although it is supposed to....all US legislation is voted upon.

4. In Canada, senators are appointed solely on the whim of the PM, and sit until age 75, no matter how long that is.

5. US Senators are elected for six year terms.

6. In the USA, the Head of State (the President) is elected.

7. In Canada, the Head of State is a hereditary monarch, as represented by the GG.

Unavoidable conclusion? The USA is MUCH more democratic thann Canada.

You forgot elections for Sheriffs, Judges, District Attorney's, etc.

True, but irrelevant to an index for democracy.

"Equality and justice for those who can afford it may be more correct."

Cliffy, can you honestly say that it is any different in Canada?

I think the real acid test would be to compare countries as far as what percentage of prisoners are rich in each country. "Democracy" and "Equality" may not be quite the same things as things stand, although I would think in a TRUE democracy there would have to be equality.

Without question if you have money you can afford a better legal team. A poor person gets appointed lawyers who work for the state for a reason. A middle class person can get a good lawyer but he is not going to be able to afford an OJ Simpson Dream Team. The rich... well they CAN afford a legal team that can kick butt.

The only group of people that cannot get away with it are the big drug dealers. They have all of their finances seized as well as their "stuff" like cars, boats etc.

that's the way it should be. When the cops find these guys in a hotel room with suitcases full of crack and $3 million cash sitting on the table, even if they are not technically guilty (and that would take quite a stretch of the imagination) they are stupid enough to deserve what they get. (And who cares why the cops entered the room, what they found is proof they knew what they were doing) Criminals in Canada have absolutely too many rights (thanks to that ASSH*LE named Trudeau), while the rest of us pay for it.

Re #31.

I don't know invented apple pie and I don't care.

Canadians may have invented both hockey and basketball, but both of these sports desperately need an overhaul.

BASKETBALL is a game of genetic freaks. Put the baskets up, 30 feet from the floor and give the average guy a chance.

HOCKEY became a game of goons, by goons for goons. Wanna see fights? Tune into the fight channel.

Anyways, what does all this have to do with democracy?

Why would you think that? A true democracy could be mob rule, depending on how the constitutional framework is set up in that country.

Democracy just means you get a vote. You can get a vote on many things, or you can get a vote on few things. Equality can be stripped by voting. Case in point is what is happening in Afghanistan. That's democracy, and it's removing rights, because their consitution affirms the supreme power of Islam before all other laws. We may not like it, but it's not our country to vote in now is it?
