This wouldn't be possible without the Paris Agreement.

Canada aligning with U.K. to end coal-fired electricity

OTTAWA — Canada is joining forces with the United Kingdom to push for a global crackdown on unabated coal-fired electricity.

Eliminating, or at least reducing, the world's reliance on coal is a critical step in the Paris climate change accord's efforts to prevent the planet from warming more than two degrees Celsius over with pre-industrial times.

Environment Minister Catherine McKenna is on a two-day trip to the U.K. and Ireland this week, pushing Canada as a global leader on climate change action.

Today she will be in Ireland to be a panellist at a climate risk conference in Dublin and tour Ireland's Marine Institute in Galway.

During Wednesday's stop in London she and Claire Perry, British minister of state for climate change and industry, announced plans to use their own national commitments to phase out coal power plants as a means to convince others to do the same.

In a statement, the two said Canada and the U.K. are both committed to phasing out unabated coal use at home — Canada by 2030 and the U.K. by 2025 — and they are inviting others to jump on board during the next United Nations climate talks in Bonn, Germany in November.

Unabated coal plants are those built without carbon capture or storage, which reduces their emissions significantly.

About 40 per cent of the world's power is generated from burning coal and in Canada one-tenth of electricity comes from coal plants.

Coal won't be part of energy's future - The Morning Call

The term "war on coal" is a modern political euphemism analogous to the advent of motorized transportation as being a "war on the horse and buggy" — it is pure hyperbole.

Statistically there are about 89,000 jobs in the coal industry (over half of those are in Kentucky and West Virginia) when a century ago there were over 700,000.

Re: Canada and UK Align to End Global Coal-fired Electricity

I'm fed up of all this global warning nonsense. The burning of coal is causing no harm to Earth. Earth is fine. Britain is a country which lies on trillions of tons of coal and our mines should be reopening for the coal to be dug up and used. We should be doing what the Germans and Chinese are doing in building more coal-fired power stations. Using "green" technology that's expensive and doesn't work, like windmills, will just leave us in the dark in the coming years. Our cities will be dark, cold and dangerous because we haven't been able to produce enough leccy, all thanks to the enviroMentalists.

Yes, coal is so incredibly clean.

The 1952 Great Smog of London, which killed around 12,000 people, arose at a time when not only trains and industries were using coal but so did almost every household. London and other British cities would have been full of millions of homes pumping out smoke through their chimneys from the coal fires in people's living rooms. People don't have coal fires nowadays and there aren't that many steam trains left. So the chances of a deadly smog arising in Britain from just some coal-fired power stations would be almost non-existent.

So you agree that coal is not clean.

It's not whether I think coal is clean or not (and some countries are developing clean coal technology) but whether I think coal should be used to generate power: and I think it should.

Have you had a palaver with Mrs. May about it yet?

What's the point? Most politicians now are so far up the backsides of the Swampies that it'll take miracles for them to overturn the "green" policies which are giving us extortionate energy bills and which will cause our cities to lose power by 2030.

It's just a case of waiting for the inevitable to happen then tell the ecomaniacs "See, we told you so" before commonsense finally prevails and we dig up lots of that lovely coal to get the power back on.

Too bad Canada's leadership is too blinded by dogma to do the same thing.

Only you could come up with some totally irrelevant number and think you were contributing something intelligent to the conversation. The important number is the tons produced.

Coal can burn as clean as NG. Just requires the proper scrubbers.

Yeah of course the government (as did Volkswagen also ) turned down DYSON exhaust particle cleaning technology ( among others) so they could screw the peeps.
;)

Franky I would prefer to cut down on the amount of mercury vapor and other coal emission poisons that I inhale each day.

From where? Canadian coal fired power plants were all fitted with scrubbers back in 80's during the acid rain era. Evil Corporations made a killing off of SO2 cap and trade.

That's great. There is NG out the yin yang and coal has better uses like steel, nanotechnology, graphite etc.

Air circulates and gases and particles in the air circulate with it. If there is even one coal-fired plant in the world I am breathing its emissions and so are you. As for Canada, unless the scrubbers on coal-fired plants are 100%, which I am betting they are not, then they are still releasing poisons.

Well you know how it is when your information comes from lefty rags showing 1920 era coal plants. Notice all these anti fossil fuel types never complain about fossil fuel consumption outside the first world? Or about all the nuke plants spewing radioactive material into the environment all over other world?

4 signs that Trump’s furious efforts to save coal are futile

Yes that must be te reason coal mines in BC are reopening.
