Donald Trump says Justin Trudeau is stepping down because he was scared about the U.S. president-elect’s proposed tariffs.

After Trudeau announced Monday that he is resigning as prime minister, the incoming president wasted no time in taking credit for playing a part in the Liberal leader’s decision.

“Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State,” Trump shared in a post to his Truth Social platform.

The remark followed a statement that Trump made to Trudeau in November after the two spoke following his reelection.

Trudeau flew unannounced to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla., after the incoming president threatened to impose tariffs on Canadian products being imported to the United States.

Trump said the new tariffs would remain in place “until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!”

After the two sat down for a hastily arranged dinner in late November in Florida, Trudeau said they “shared a productive wide-ranging discussion.” The day afterwards, Trump wrote in a Truth Social post that they discussed “many important topics that will require both Countries to work together to address.”

But in the days following the dinner, news trickled out that seemed to indicate that the meeting might not have been as smooth as Trudeau was making it seem.

Paraphrasing their discussion over dinner from conversations he had with two people at the table, Fox News senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy said that when Trudeau informed Trump that tariffs would “kill the Canadian economy,” Trump joked that “if the Canadian economy can’t survive without ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion a year then maybe Canada should become the 51st state.”

Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc said that Trump’s comments were a joke and nothing more.

In his year-end interview with comedian Mark Critch, Trudeau maintained that Trump’s remarks were an “offhand, jocular moment” and said he didn’t think the incoming president was being serious.

But in his message Monday, Trump said “the United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat.”

“Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned,” he continued.

Trump also reiterated one of his recent talking points that if Canada merges with the U.S., Canadians would enjoy a better standard of life.

“There would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!” Trump wrote.

Since his reelection, Trump has repeatedly teased Trudeau referring to him as a “governor” and boasting that Canadians would enjoy a tax cut of more than 60% if the country became a U.S. state.

In December, Trump went viral after he shared an AI-generated photo of himself standing beside a Canadian flag on a mountaintop along with the caption, “Oh Canada!”

On Instagram, the post generated over 376,000 likes in its first two hours, with many of Trump’s 29 million followers begging him to “invade Canada.”

“We need you, Donald,” one person pleaded. “Please save my country!!!”

“Please buy Canada,” another asked.

Then, in a Christmas Day message to his followers on Truth Social, Trump suggested Wayne Gretzky, “‘The Great One’ as he is known in ice-hockey circles … run for prime minister of Canada.”

“I said, ’Wayne, why don’t you run for prime minister of Canada, soon to be known as the governor of Canada — you would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.’ He had no interest,’” Trump wrote.

'Girl, you're not the governor of Canada anymore'
'Another masterpiece,' Tesla CEO tweeted, sharing viral 2023 video

With Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing his resignation earlier this week, Elon Musk is throwing his weight behind Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.

Musk, a vocal opponent of Trudeau’s, tweeted his support for Poilievre on Tuesday, sharing a number of tweets heralding the end of the Liberal Leader’s reign and Poilievre’s presumptive victory in Canada’s next election later this year.

In one video he shared, Poilievre is seen chewing on an apple as he confronts a reporter in B.C. “Another masterpiece,” Musk captioned the clip, which went viral around the world.

Back in 2023, Don Urquhart, a local newspaper editor in Oliver and Osoyoos, asked Poilievre about his strategy of taking a “populist pathway” to become Canada’s next leader.

“What does that mean?” Poilievre asked.

The reporter suggested Poilievre was “appealing to people’s more emotional levels, I would guess.”

Poilievre again asked what he meant by that and to give an example.

“Certainly you tap very strong ideological language quite frequently,” the reporter asnwered.

The exchange continued with the reporter unable to back up any of his claims, including a comparison he made between Poilievre and former U.S. president Donald Trump.

A lot of people would say that you’re simply taking a page out of the Donald Trump book, said Urquhart.

“A lot of people? Like which people would say that?” Poilievre fired back as he took a bite. “Give me the page … You must know somebody … I don’t know what you’re question is.”

Fox News described the back-and-forth as Poilievre batting down (a) reporter’s questions, while the Daily Mail described the war of words as the Conservative leader calmly tearing apart a reporter.

After Musk dusted off the viral clip, the video garnered over 22 million views with more than 204,000 likes.

On Wednesday morning, Musk continued to troll Trudeau after the prime minister tried to clap back at President-elect Donald Trump’s rhetoric that Canada would be better off if it became the 51st state.

“You get rid of that artificially drawn line and you take a look at what that looks like, and it would also be much better for national security,” Trump said Tuesday, referring to the border between Canada and the U.S. “And don’t forget, we basically protect Canada.”

“There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States,” Trudeau tweeted. “Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s biggest trading and security partners.”

But Musk mocked Trudeau’s fighting words, firing back: “Girl, you’re not the governor of Canada anymore, so (it) doesn’t matter what you say.”

After Musk’s reply went viral with over 1.1 million views, fans praised his “roasting skills.”

“Elon out here roasting people like a master chef, and he doesn’t even break a sweat,” one person commented. “It’s like watching a flamethrower with a sense of humor!”

Later in the morning, Musk posted a meme featuring an AI-generated Trump playing the violin while Trudeau gave his resignation speech on Monday.

Musk’s latest ribbing of Trudeau came after he also shared an article written by journalist Bari Weiss titled “The Comprehensive Failure of Justin Trudeau” and a video of Poilievre outlining how he would put an end to inflation as he addressed a group of workers.

“Perfectly articulated,” Musk wrote.

Immediately following Trudeau’s announcement on Monday, the Tesla CEO was one of the first notable names to cheer the news as he took to X to celebrate.

“2025 is looking good,” Musk wrote in response to another post that said: “Trump won. Trudeau resigned.”

After Poilievre sat down for an interview with Jordan Peterson, Musk reposted the video entitled “Canada’s Next Prime Minister,” calling it a “great interview.”

He also replied to billionaire Bill Ackman’s message that Poilievre “should be Canada’s next leader” with a 100% emoji.

Last month, after he called himself a “proud feminist” and took a swipe at Americans for not electing Kamala Harris as the country’s 47th president, Musk called Trudeau “an insufferable tool.”

“Won’t be in power for much longer,” Musk wrote about the prime minister on X in response to Trudeau’s comments.

Shortly afterwards, Musk said Poilievre “seems great” after Canadian author and professor Gad Saad tweeted, “I had forgotten what it was like to have a Canadian leader with a brain.”

And you actually think some random poll created by a right wing person, on a majority right wing social media platform, voted on by his right wing followers, is any indication on reality?

The fact that 35% of his right wing followers said No should speak volumes when you account for all the other people who not only DON'T follow him, or all the people who didn't bother to cast a vote in such a poll, but all the other people who don't even use the Social Media Platform.

Do the same thing on BlueSky and I bet you'd get the opposite poll.

So what exactly are you cheering on about here? Is that supposed to be some kind of win for you? Pretty damn low bar you set yourself if that's the case. Thou has fallen mighty far since last I ventured into these forums several years ago.

Do better.

Oh and for the record, and a reminder, I am neither left or right leaning. I don't adhere to such petty small minded crap, nor do I feel like I need to fit into some group to feel like I belong in the world like a teenager seeking approval from mommy and daddy. Figured I'd state this now so we can avoid the predictable "Oh you're a left wing blah blah blah" dismissive quips because you don't like what I have to say. I'm too old for that shit, so let's just cut through it and be done.

And don't worry. Left leaning people will get theirs in due time too.

You sure do seem to love the US and Trump. Wouldn't it be easier for you to, you know, pack your bags and actually move to the US that you love so much, ruled but the geriatric old man who shits his britches you love so much, rather than try and convince others to magically change an entire nation and merge it into another one?

Oh right, that would then make you an immigrant and hated by Americans because
