NEWTOWN, CT (KTRK) -- At least one person, believed to be the gunman, is dead and another wounded in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, WABC-TV in New York is reporting. Police report that the school is now cleared of shooters, but they are still treating it as an active shooter situation and all schools in the district remain locked down.

The school superintendent's office says the district has locked down schools to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The shooting was reported at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, in western Connecticut. State police say Newtown police called them at about 9:40 a.m. about the reports.

The Newtown Bee newspaper posted a photo of a group of young students -- some crying, others looking visibly frightened -- being escorted by adults through a parking lot in a line, hands on each other's shoulders.

State police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance says they have a number of personnel on the scene to assist.

Not enough info to wade in on a gun debate at this point in my opinion.

Looking at the aerial map, it sure doesn't look like many kids are walking

It wasn’t clear how many people were injured at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said a teacher had been shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital.

Weird numbers for an Elementary school. That implies that 13 of the victims are adults.

Does this mean that the adults came from everywhere to put themselves between the
children and the shooter, or a Christmas (Holiday, Winter, Festivus, whatever) concert
was taking place?

Still not enough info & too much confusion to wade in with an informed opinion yet, In my
opinion. An ugly situation all around though, & the radio is claiming it's 18 children out of the
still current total of 27.

The Gunmen walked into the office to start shooting.. think they targeted the adults first.

Regardles of their race, nationality, religion or politics I think this would qualify as a form of terrorism. If this doesnt instill terror in people I dont know what will.

I liked Steven Pinker's book on the subject. So many people think the world is getting worse and worse but there isnt really any evidence for it. In absolute numbers more people are killed now but as a percentage of the population its declining. This world is a huge improvement over the 20th century.
