Northern Ontario,
Can anyone tell me how changing the words to a song will enhance the legal status of women in this country?

It's just a touchy feely bill that looks good but doesn't do a bloody thing..

Like the P.M. selfies..........

This bill isn't supposed to change the legal status of women. It's supposed to acknowledge and address the fact that women have faced systemic barriers to accessing full public participation in Canadian history, and that some elements of today's Canadian reality are holdovers from a time when equal legal footing did not exist. When the English lyrics were written in 1906, and a conscious choice was made to refer exclusively to men in the anthem's lyrics, remember that a woman was not to be considered a "person" in interpreting the Canadian constitution.

The bill might not do anything except replace two words in a schedule to the National Anthem Act, but let's remember that anthems, like other national symbols, can carry incredible weight in terms of the social and cultural fabric of a country. I, for one, think that said fabric should be an inclusive and forward-thinking one. I hope that this bill receives the support of the House.

What policies?

You think he means all those policies the libs keep talking about while failing to deliver on? Oops - forgot they are delivering on the refugee one - belatedly.

Shame on you, posting 'The Maple Leaf Forever'! All the French Canadians will get stirred up all over again and think up some new ways to harangue us.

It also quickly became outdated when the 'thistle, shamrock and the rose' were cast aside and the Maple Leaf stood alone.

In fact, Mowich, the Liberals have delivered on a good number of campaign promises already:

  • They cut taxes for middle-class Canadians from 22% to 20.5%
  • They introduced a new tax bracket of 33% for Canadians earning more than $200,000 a year
  • They changed compassionate care benefits to provide for six months to care for an ill family member
  • They have already unmuzzled Canadian scientists and researchers
  • They have created the independent advisory board on Senate appointments
  • They have restored the long-form census
  • The Liberals appointed a gender-balanced cabinet
  • They contributed $100 million to the UN High Commission of Refugees
  • They introduced a right of appeal for denied refugee claims from designated countries
  • They have doubled the number of applications allowed for family reunification to 10,000 per year
  • They have ordered a national inquiry into murdered and missing Indigenous women
  • They have followed through on continuing our participation in Operations REASSURANCE and UNIFIER

Patriot isn't nearly inclusive enough. All of those who DON'T believe in Canada need to be included too if we are to have sunnier ways. No one is left out. Everyone is a winner.

All of those who don't believe in Canada can be politely shown the door.

See how COMPLETE and COMPREHENSIVE this shift to the partisan Liberals is, eh Mowich?

 Thank you for that, 5P...................I had heard about some of them now that you remind me. I should have been much more specific.

Great, but it's too bad they haven't done anything for Canadians.

ps - I hope you realize that tax rate changes don't really take effect for a year, and are expected to cost Canadians more money in the long run (not revenue neutral).

Considering he just won in November and the first sitting wasn't until December, how could you expect a tax change to take place any sooner than the 2016 tax year? It is way to late to be able to implement it in the 2015 tax year.

Yes, so it doesn't count for having any impact now.

The implication was and is, that the present Liberal government has not followed through on any of their promises. They have been in for less than three months, have only sat in Parliament a very short time and have accomplished a decent list, so far. To state otherwise is nothing more than sour grapes.

Maybe some things related to the empowerment of women are just for the show,,kinda like patronizing in a sense. I'm not Canadian so it ain't none of my bizwax but sometimes I think politicians do things not for honorable motives but just to look good in the eyes of the general public. The motives really aren't sincere me thinks.

As a woman I see moves like this as 'patronizing'. It's just a 'feel good' thing to strengthen 'Big Brother's' role.
I have never felt that I needed the government to protect my equality. My mother was born in 1900 and she had a successful life without government making her 'equal'. I don't know any women today who are kept down because they are women.
We don't have a special recognition day to praise men for the things they have accomplished. We just take it for granted that all citizens, male OR female do the best we can.

...how?

It isn't a Government bill.

If it passes and is enacted, then boom, the anthem is changed. There is no transition campaign that the Government needs to undertake to do; there is no "Canadian National Anthem transition budget" that needs to be spent; it is a replacement of two words in the schedule to the National Anthem Act.

Opposition to this bill, under the guide of "taxpayers' time and money," is nothing more than a strawman defence. This change would take no effort whatsoever on the part of the Government to enact; to oppose it even in the context of that reality means that you oppose it, in fact, because you think that Canadians should be reminded, every time they sing the national anthem, that you that think that men are, indeed, just a little bit more important than women.
Well to start with it shows that at least some backbench Liberals are more interested in getting their 15 seconds of fame instead of concentrating on the important things. That in itself is an indication of the party's interests.
A while a go there was a move to take god keep our land out, now this. Perhaps we should just write a new PC pablum anthem.

You seem proud of all the bad things they have done so far. How much more do you want to destroy?
