Am I missing something here? Is this 2012 or is it 1950? All over America we
have people starving, homeless, unemployed, and sick without universal health
insurance. At the same time we have a group of small minded people who are
totally consumed with the issue of gay marriage. Now I'm an old grandpa with
twenty four grandchildren so I don't know much about the gay lifestyle.
I do know this however, its none of my bloody business as to who loves who.
If we have an open society, that entitles freedom for all in a democracy why
would these people not have the same rights as everyone else? It was less
than a hundred years ago when we had the same nonsense as to whether women
should have equal rights and even the right to vote. Come to think of it the same
group of right wing over zealous religious people fought that change too.
That is not to say all conservatives or all religious people are opposed to equal
rights in this case, just the uncompromising people. These are people who believe
in a democracy they can control. They in fact want to dictate everyone Else's
concept of democracy. This shouldn't even be a back burner issue, it should not
be an issue at all.
Why is it that some people want to go about hating people who want to love each
other? Was not Christ himself about compassion and understanding? I am willing
to bet that some of these zealots given the chance could straighten out Ole Jesus
on some of his positions they don't like. This whole issue is nonsense.

No way!! I don't believe it! Those videos were made by the same people that faked 9/11!!

Cheney is pure evil, a sociopath, maybe even a psychopath!! He couldn't support gay marriage, his head would explode.

It's all about deflecting the voters' attention from the real issues. As long as the Republicans can get Americans focused on complete non-issues like gay marriage then they will be less inclined to notice the terrible inequities in their society and less likely to demand meaningful change, such as improved health care, better schools, and a reward system that actually pays a decent living wage.

Interestingly, this is one of the major areas of contrast between Americans and Canadians. Gay marriage in Canada is a complete non-issue. In the USA it determines the way millions of Americans vote.

Bar Sinister, well put. We have a population that is more or less informed
in Canada and all too often a lot of people fail to go and vote. In the USA
all kinds of uninformed, people or people who are not being given all the
facts do go and vote, without really knowing what they are voting for.

I think one major difference between the U.S. and Canada is the fact that many Americans live their lives as laid down in the Bible taken literally. As long as it's what they believe, I'm not sure there is much wrong with it. Questioning others' beliefs may be just one short step away from denying them their beliefs.

You're right. If the focus stays on the Bamster's record there's no way he can win re-election.

Good thing we didn't question those who believed the Earth was flat.

Every person in the world has a perfect right to believe the world is flat. You have to watch you don't take things too literally, for all intents and purposes the "world" centuries ago was flat, as the world for most folks comprised a few square miles in the vicinity of where they lived. After all, we say Saskatchewan is flat.

You're right. If the focus stays on the Bamster's record there's no way he can win re-election.

.

How much do you want to wager about Obama getting re-elected?

lol... People "starving" in America! Too funny. I know it is off topic but this always makes me laugh considering our "poor" are the most overweight of all classes.

Americans "today" do not know what starvation is. It seems you don't either. Google "famine" and see what "starving" really is.

Carry on...

I'm not sure that "finally" is quite correct. It's more of an issue of he not wanting it to be an election issue.

Which he is entitled to. I think he chose his words carefully when he specified that it is his personal opinion and not some kind of social policy he would impose.

Well played politically speaking. Obama didn't want to make an election issue of it directly (but he knew, given the current political environment in the US, this is his ticket to re-election), so he needed to have his hand 'forced' in some way. Enter Biden with a 'slip', and now, this election will essentially be the US's referendum on gay marriage. Very well played.

But you know his opponents will use his choice out of context and use it as a diversion. And they will be able to because Biden couldn't keep his mouth shut. If they had wanted to make this an election issue they would have made a more prominent announcement earlier.

You assume a majority of Americans are in favour. If it were Canada, it would be a good move. But if this becomes "the" issue, it diminishes his re-election ability. I think it was a mistake.

If gay marriages were made legal without anyone knowing, I doubt there would be a big stink post realization that it was legal.

One thing we know his opposing gay marriage up till yesterday to him now supporting it was a flip flop or dishonesty.
