Batman and Superman to team up in new film

Superman and Batman are to appear in the same film for the first time, it has been revealed, to the delight of many fans of the popular characters.

The surprise announcement was made by Zack Snyder, who directed the most recent Superman film Man of Steel.

But speaking at a comic convention in San Diego, California, Mr Snyder said the script was still being written.

Production is expected to begin next year and the film is scheduled for release in the summer of 2015.

Warner Bros confirmed that the two superheroes would team up for the first time.

British actor Henry Cavill - who starred in Man of Steel - will again play Superman.

However, an actor for the new Batman is yet to be cast.

"They're both alpha males," fan Benjamin Ha was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. He added that he expected fireworks in the new film.

For many comic book enthusiasts it is a dream come true in what promises to be the ultimate superhero adventure, the BBC's Peter Bowes in Los Angeles reports.

The enduring popularity of Superman and Batman has seen the latest films featuring the two characters earn revenues of more than $1bn (£655m) between them.

I liked the campy Adam West Batman when I was 3.

I love that stuff too. Ah, nostalgia.

Although the Dark Knight trilogy wasn't bad.

I guess everyone has heard by now that ben affleck will be playing bruce wayne/batman.

Yes. Big mistake. Like when they got Clooney to do it.

Oh and guess who's playing Robin.

Sorry, she does not look like an Amazonian Goddess to me. They don't seem to be casting very well for this movie.

Jesse Eisenberg cast as Lex Luthor in 'Batman vs. Superman'

Huge villain news on the Superman/Batman front.
According to Variety, Warner Bros. has announced that Oscar-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg has been cast as Lex Luthor in Zack Snyder’s untitled Man of Steel sequel. Jeremy Irons will play Alfred in the new film.
“Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940,” Snyder said in a statement. “What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”
Eisenberg and Irons join a cast that includes Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. The film also stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trilogy is complete.
After waiting up to 14 hours in line to catch a glimpse of whatever director Zack Snyder had to offer during the Warner Bros. panel at Comic Con on Saturday, fans were not disappointed.
Surrounding the room with giant screens, Snyder not only presented a small teaser of Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill in action, facing off against each other in the pouring rain (clearly very influenced by Frank Miller’s Dark Knight series), but also gave the world their first look at Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.First thought that comes to mind? Xena. The Israeli actress looks more like an Amazon warrior than a celestial being, but all in all, the costume isn’t too shabby in the slightest.
Gadot tweeted, “I’m ready,” with a high resolution of the photo showed off in Hall H attached.
Like I mentioned in a previous post, Snyder is setting up Dawn of Justice as the anti-Marvel, very Christopher Nolan-like superhero film.
It’s going to be dark, it’s going to be grimy, and it’s going to be violent.
Let’s just hope it’s going to be good. Seriously Snyder, we haven’t forgotten about Man of Steel just yet.

'Batman v Superman:' Is Jena Malone playing female Robin?
Variety Staff,

LOS ANGELES – "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" will reportedly feature a female Robin, with actress Jena Malone rumoured to be playing Carrie Kelly, according to a local news station in Detroit.
WILX-10 News station reporter Kirk Montgomery spoke with one of the extras on the film's ultra-secret set at Michigan State University, where a scene involving Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) was being filmed this week.
"I've also learned that the character of Robin is now female," he said alluding to the film's script.
Warner Bros. declined to comment.
Malone, who recently appeared in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, has been spotted on set and premieres with a new red hairdo.
Casting rumours for Batman v Superman have been in high demand since director Zack Snyder revealed the project at Comic-Con last year.
The anonymous extra who spoke to WILX faces a hefty fine of $5 million after signing a non-disclosure agreement with Warner Bros.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, co-starring Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot, opens March 25, 2016.

LOS ANGELES - Aquaman has officially landed.
Director Zack Snyder tweeted the first photo of Jason Momoa as DC Comics superhero Aquaman on Thursday night.
Momoa, ex-star of "Game of Thrones," will appear in Snyder's upcoming film "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" as well as the future Justice League films.
In the DC comic books, Aquaman is the king of the seven seas, hence the poster slogan.

'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' review: Ben Affleck's Dark Knight one of the worst things about new superhero film
Despite some brilliant casting decisions, Batman v Superman weighed down by convulted plot, excessive running time and slobbering villain
By Bruce Kirkland, Postmedia Network
First posted: Tuesday, March 22, 2016 06:00 PM EDT | Updated: Tuesday, March 22, 2016 06:22 PM EDT
This is frustrating: Half of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is brilliant. Unfortunately, the other half of Zack Snyder’s epic-length superhero movie is so bloated that it blunts the effect of the good stuff.
This live-action comic book movie, with an overwrought running time of two hours and 31 minutes, gets bogged down in too much existential angst, too much deadly soul-searching and too much post-9/11 fear-mongering. Not that those elements should be eliminated — because they are part of enriching the DC Extended Universe — but director Snyder and screenwriters Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer layer it on too thick. This dreary darkness overwhelms us, even during the excessive action scenes.
So my three-star rating out of five is generous. Yet that brilliant stuff goes a long way. Including towards opening up the Universe to come in Snyder’s two Justice League instalments, the Wonder Woman standalone movie now in post-production and a total of 11 movies by the end of 2020.
There may even be a 12th if rumours of a new standalone Batman — starring and directed by Ben Affleck — come to fruition. Snyder nearly confirmed as much to me in a recent interview.
In addition to establishing a new Bruce Wayne/Batman in Affleck, Dawn of Justice gives us our first big-screen Wonder Woman in Gal Gadot. Hurrah! It also briefly gives us “found-footage” glimpses of Barry Allen/The Flash (Ezra Miller), Victor Stone/Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Jason Momoa). All for future movies.
The new movie also merges the worlds of Batman and Superman into one sprawling physical space. So this is a DC geography lesson, not a spoiler: Gotham City, where the Batman serves nightly as an angry vigilante, is a twin city with Metropolis, where Superman’s alter ego Clark Kent still works as a mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet. The two cities are separated by a large bay (like San Francisco and Oakland).
This is critical for the plot. The death and devastation we saw in Man of Steel (2013), when Superman saved Planet Earth from the ravages of his fellow aliens from Krypton, left parts of Gotham City in ruins as well as swaths of Metropolis. Bruce Wayne suffered personally, and his resentment has powered up enough for him to consider killing Superman, thus eliminating what he perceives as a future threat of total annihilation. Hence the title, Batman v Superman.
Anything more about the story would invite spoilers. Instead, here are the three things I like the most … and the three things I hate the most:
Love-it #1: The casting: Gal Gadot is great as the 5,000-year-old Amazon princess Wonder Woman, a.k.a. Diana Prince when disguised as a mere mortal. This augers well for the standalone Wonder Woman. When Godot finally shows up as Wonder Woman in the climax, she saves us from some of the murky mess surrounding the death-battle —welcome relief from the macho bullying of the boys. Likewise, casting Jesse Eisenberg as psychotic Lex Luthor is as devastatingly clever as it was unlikely. When Eisenberg’s face is twitching with madness, when his character is plotting Machiavellian twists, Eisenberg’s Luthor becomes a classic uber-villain. Also kudos go to Holly Hunter and Jeremy Irons in support roles.
Love-it #2: Affleck’s Bruce Wayne: Bringing depth and new complexity, Affleck’s version of the Gotham City playboy takes him into middle-aged ennui. It is fascinating and sometimes moving.
Love-it #3: As you would expect from a project reportedly costing $250 million, the special effects are first-rate and the twin worlds of Metropolis and Gotham City make visual sense. On the large scale, production designer Patrick Tatopoulos and cinematographer Larry Fong both work at the top of their game.
Hate-it #1: Affleck’s Batman: There is nothing really wrong with his performance. But, when he dons the armoured version of the Batsuit to battle Superman, Affleck looks like a big, bad, clunky RoboCop. He become impersonal. Therefore, no emotional impact.
Hate-it #2: Doomsday: When superheroes have to fight a common foe, it would be more interesting if it did not look a slobbering, mutated version of King Kong.
Hate-it #3: The endless repetition of convoluted plot points about B & S — all leading to the obvious climax — is tiresome.
