The island was under the UK’s control from 1627 up until independence in 1966 and has remained a constitutional monarchy ever since.


But the Prime Minister has laid down his plans for Barbados to become a republic with a ceremonial President in time for the 50th anniversary of independence next year.


Speaking on Sunday evening, Freundel Stuart told a branch meeting of his Democratic Labour Party (DLP) that the change would happen over the coming year.




George Pilgrim, general secretary of the DLP, said a draft bill proposing the Queen’s removal will be voted on by Parliament but the government does not expect any opposition.


“This will move the country through to the next major step in the process of nationhood,” he added.


“(The Prime Minister) said he found it awkward in the year 2015 to have to stand up and pledge allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen.”

I live here and know what Canadians think. The only reason we still have the royals is because of the cost associated with getting rid of them.

Well I'm for keeping the Queen as Head of State. I would vote to keep it as is.. but I'm part of an older generation that still has some sentimentality for the past.

To alter the Constitution to establish the Commonwealth of Australia as a republic with the Queen and Governor-General being replaced by a President appointed by a two-thirds majority of the members of the Commonwealth Parliament.

The weasel words are underlined. The question defined a constitutional format not accepted by many republicans.

Speak for yourself, I certainly don't. Keeping the monarchy in style is an expensive proposition, money that could better be spent elsewhere. I have nothing against the royals as long as they stay in England .

Yes we can. That is one of many reasons we want to get rid of them.

Truth is Canada is not heading in the same direction. I for one used to say
get rid of her. Now in the last few years I am not so sure. Safeguards are a
good thing and I hope we don't disband our history for a republic. Look at
the one south of us for example no way I would want to be part of that
