after almost 400 years after British colonisation

The island was under the UK’s control from 1627 up until independence in 1966 and has remained a constitutional monarchy ever since.

But the Prime Minister has laid down his plans for Barbados to become a republic with a ceremonial President in time for the 50th anniversary of independence next year.

Speaking on Sunday evening, Freundel Stuart told a branch meeting of his Democratic Labour Party (DLP) that the change would happen over the coming year.

George Pilgrim, general secretary of the DLP, said a draft bill proposing the Queen’s removal will be voted on by Parliament but the government does not expect any opposition.

“This will move the country through to the next major step in the process of nationhood,” he added.

“(The Prime Minister) said he found it awkward in the year 2015 to have to stand up and pledge allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen.”

Good on Barbados. Canada is heading the same way. The monarchy is becoming increasingly irrelevant here.

You're clueless of many things, Canadian culture being one of them.

Well prove me wrong then. We all know that the Canadians don't get rid of the monarchy because they'd much rather rpefer that to a republic.

If you can prove otherwise, and show that most Canadians want a republic, do it now.

Even among Conservatives in Canada, 58% want to end ties with the British monarchy (Angus Reid)

Only 12% of Canadians want to see Chuck as king of Canada (National Post).

It is almost unanimous (Spade).

Australian had a republic referendum in 1999, it's still is a constitutional monarchy.

I think it's part of Canadian history and what makes Canada unique from the United States..

I doubt Canadians would vote to ditch the monarchy.

To alter the Constitution to establish the Commonwealth of Australia as a republic with the Queen and Governor-General being replaced by a President appointed by a two-thirds majority of the members of the Commonwealth Parliament.

The weasel words are underlined. The question defined a constitutional format not accepted by many republicans.

Well I'm for keeping the Queen as Head of State. I would vote to keep it as is.. but I'm part of an older generation that still has some sentimentality for the past.

Americans are often royalists.

It's not that they don't have the balls. It's because Canadians don't want a republic and would prefer to keep their monarchy.
Speak for yourself, I certainly don't. Keeping the monarchy in style is an expensive proposition, money that could better be spent elsewhere. I have nothing against the royals as long as they stay in England .

Truth is Canada is not heading in the same direction. I for one used to say
get rid of her. Now in the last few years I am not so sure. Safeguards are a
good thing and I hope we don't disband our history for a republic. Look at
the one south of us for example no way I would want to be part of that
