I wonder what happened to the Brits? They used to be about midway on the intelligence ladder. They worked well under supervision and could be trusted with simple tasks. They were also loyal like a Labrador. Something happened to them after WWII.

Outside the UK, their departure from the EU is nothing special. Certainly, the vote hasn't caused any economic meltdowns or even bumps in the rest of the world. Stock markets are fine. Just when did the Brits become so full of themselves? Sadly, their isolationist stance will hurt them in the long run, but the rest of the world doesn't care.

They are the 'also rans' of the modern age.

And they are getting lots of Muslims as their future taskmasters.

It's just sad.

There's a growing sense, not only in Great Britain, but in the US as well, that the elites, or the political class, or whatever you'd like to call them, are incompetent and have been leading us astray. And the response from elites is to call those criticisms illegitimate. Those doing the carping are assumed to be racists or nationalists, both of which, of course, are unpleasant, dirty types of people. Both the UK's Leavers and the US's Trumpers share some commonalities. Among them are skepticism over free trade and free immigration; concerns that elites dismiss as foolish and uneducated. And, of course racist.
It's not working nearly as well as it used to.

Does the fact that London stock market now higher than it was pre-Brexit mean everyone has to STFU abt economic destructiveness of populism?

So are you in favor of an economic union with America ?

No. They should be allowed to expire on their own. Corporate senilicide, if you will.

They won't though. They will send ambassadors to various parts of the world to work trade deals, treaties and agreements. The EU will not crumble because they are gone. Nor will the rest of the world. Their time in the sun has gone. To employ an overworked line; the sun has set on England. It's evolution. Empires rise and fall. Watch them tumble. They have been falling for years.

Of course, the Brits will vehemently deny it. Unfortunately, these people are living in the past. It's a global economy, controlled by corporate entities, not kings. Technology trumps titles.

They'll come around. The best analogy I can give is that of sending a child to his room to think things over. The Brits have got to learn to live in the modern age.

I wish the world was the same as when I was a boy, but nothing stands still. The sooner they realize that, the better.

It's a two edged sword! Chain saws (if you had one) could weigh 50 - 60 lbs, plowing a small field with a team of horses could take all day and if you were setting chokers on a high lead logging show you earned your keep. I remember my Mother washing clothes on a scrub board and to keep food cool in summer we used to drop it down the well in a bucket tied to a length of rope. Those were definitely the days. On the plus side there wasn't as much killing. :)

We had servants. :)

It would be more precise to say that I wish for the simple times of my youth. No cares, bills or tech screaming in my ears. Carefree summer days fishing, exploring the banks of the river. Riding my bike to wherever curiosity took me. Three or four television channels. Your schedule was easily memorized.

Rock music on my transistor radio. Cars whose appearance changed every year and could be easily distinguished. Strato Chiefs, Laurentians and Parisiennes. Biscaynes, Bel Airs and Impalas. Laughing at a young Jerry Lewis at the movies. Chocolate Soldiers. Tube radios.

It's the memories. The feeling in prayers, not the prayers themselves. Everything was new, but not rushed.

We'll be back with more Reminiscences of My Youth after several minutes of commercial touting high tech, computers and Cialis.

yeah, there was a lot of fun in that stuff too. We probably had more fun with an old inner tube at the beach than all the racket making gadgets today that cause water, air and noise pollution!
