"a thinking person would say that the judges looked at the situation"....

More like looked at the situation `around them` and made the wise decision to release the kidnappers.

You can believe in whatever conspiracies that you wish; however, on the face of it, a thinking person would say that the judges looked at the situation and determined that what these people were trying to do was wrong, and broke all kinds of laws, they had good intentions, and therefore decided to be lenient.

*US Suceed in Bribing Haitian Officials...Kidnappers Released* (did US threaten sanctions against the country, I wonder?)

The U.S. and Haitian governments are holding *talks* on the fate of 10 American missionaries accused of illegally trying to take children out of the quake-hit Caribbean country, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday.

Haitian authorities said they would decide today whether to pursue a case against the missionaries, who were arrested on Friday trying to cross into the Dominican Republic with a busload of 33 children they said were orphaned by the quake.

In Washington, Clinton said for the first time the two governments were discussing the case, diplomatically sensitive because the U.S. is heading a massive relief operation after the earthquake wrecked the capital, Port-au-Prince, and killed up to 200,000 people.

The State Department, which has been at pains to avoid any impression it might be interfering in the matter, said Tuesday it had not been involved in any broad discussions about the missionaries' case or any possible prosecution.

The accused missionaries vehemently deny they were engaged in child trafficking.

They said they were just trying to help some of the thousands of orphans left destitute and abandoned by the quake.

"It was unfortunate, whatever the motivation, that this group of Americans took matters into their own hands," Clinton said.

Haitian officials said the detained Americans, most of whom belong to an Idahobased Baptist church, had no documents proving the children were orphans and no official permission to take them out of the country, which meant the group faced possible kidnapping charges.

The missionaries were questioned by a judge Tuesday and Wednesday, the prosecutor in the case, Mazarre Fortil, said. "Tomorrow, my decision will be known. Tomorrow, everybody will know what we decide," Fortil said.

Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said on Wednesday the case was stealing attention from the plight of Haitians.

The kidnappers were released earlier this morning/last night from what I understand....and of course not surprising. It was release them or suffer the consequences from US ie holding back aid, medicine etc.
Bribing by the yanks doesn't surprise me.
Absolutely disgusting.

Exactly right. may not like how they went about doing it, but there really isn't any functioning Haitian goverment at the moment.

Maybe during the Bush years but since Obama came around that has changed quite a bit. That is one good thing he did.

Of course that got you ALL upset.

Back to the OP topic. Didn't I tell you they would get off? I told you so.

I told you they would get off.

No extended jail time, no conviction...nada.
Getting off doesn't mean no crime was committed, admittedly these are previous examples but there was no change in heart.
UNObserver & International Report
""I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers.
"In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in.
"I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints.
"The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents." Major General Smedley Butler.(1881-1940.)"

Back to the 'helping' part, say aid (via Missionaries for example) was brought to the 'tent cities, once the able were fed and watered they would be capable of feeding and watering the ones still on the injured list.
Say a woman who had a few children was given more than enough food and water for 5 more children more than her own (at a moderate wage) With that small amount of money she heads for the docks and gets shoved to the front of the line (because of the children) and now she gets a larger container/home in a more than basic style (foldouts as our present day holiday trailers with basic services, military style function over style and top of the air conditioned and hand woven Persian rugs) Chip in with another few others and they could get the top of the line 50 person room and bored arrangement. Alberta already has companies that add hi-tech utilities to units as small as engineers shacks. A little expensive in the beginning but given the 50 year lifespan it is almost free if you don't ming having lots of plants around. Once she decides on the model it gets moved to the new gated community, stacked container 'neighborhoods' that could hold 50,000 and hold as many containers as any large ship could carry. Make a spiderweb like framework out of 'slightly-bent' deep-hole drill-stem and the surrounding hillsides could become the cornerstone of the stability of the community that would sway but not bend. If the hill that hold all the screw anchors . Adding in 1,000's of 72ft containers would make the structure even stronger once welded in.

That is what aid looks like if you ever have anything more than troops to bring to the party. (ie deliver the containers and the 'loan' of most of the welding equipment, perhaps the power-plants out state of the art sub so they had power until the sea-turbines were online they they could have it back lol

And it makes money rather than costing money. The ones that 'freely design and build that 'neighborhood' will be in demand anyplace 'earth-proof' housing. Oceans rising getting your feet wet, Waterproof the containers inside and out and loosely joint them together in a raft that .
Avalanche, built the resort above such zones, as long as the snow passes harmlessly below it it a tourist attraction rather than a certain death trap.

How much drill-stem do you want, I have a line on enough for several freighters full (on credit if I can get a buyer by the end of the day). I don't agree that the US was the best choice for the job but since you are there why not ........ build something lasting and leave it for some people who will be staying. The same style of cranes that handle logs could handle pipes and containers. The last floor might need jacking into place from below.

To do that sort of framework in the hills of California you would need to drill right through the hills and then pull some cable through and leave and eyelet at each end to be truly stable, Vegetation would have to be roof-top. The natural runoffs could carry the services like water and sewage. People sized traffic would be by low-friction human powered lifts (you load up the lift to less than the kids weight, sent them up the circular-pole-stairs and they stand under the down arrow, they come down the groceries go up, repeat as necessary until everything/everybody is at the top.

Apparently they are being taken back to the point of being 'detained and they are to prove they are legit by going back the entire way they came in on on.
They should be able to do that, as long as it isn't a military pick-up they will be released unharmed.
