He's supposed to be this blue collar outsider that was going to take on the political elites in Toronto politics.

The only problem is he's even more of an elite than most of his opponents.

A guarded Jim Flaherty has revealed he has had conversations of a “personal” manner with Rob Ford following the controversy over a video allegedly showing the Toronto mayor smoking crack cocaine.

“I’ve spoken with the mayor and I’ve spoken with members of his family. I’m very close to the family, and I won’t comment further on that,” the finance minister told the CBC’s Evan Soloman on “Power & Politics.”

“The family are very good friends of mine,” Flaherty said curtly, looking uncomfortable with the topic.

Pushed further to comment on the subject by Soloman, Flaherty finally relented enough to say:“My discussions with him have been personal, they haven’t been about infrastructure or anything like that.”

You don't get much more inside than Rob Ford when it comes to wealth and power in Canada, but he's this little guy that everybody is attacking without cause? With so much myth right from the start, much of it created by Ford himself and his supporters is there any wonder there's so much confusion around him.

It has nothing to do with ideology, it's about honesty and accountability, without which open and honest government is impossible.

I don't know where this left wing ideologue stuff comes from, my only real political belief is that democracy is a really good thing.

This man was my godfather as child, I grew up hearing stories about the evils of communism so I'm hardly a supporter of far left ideology. I guess being in the middle of the road politically makes me a lefty to people who are way over on the right.

To me the greatest Canadian I know is the man who led the student brigade that held the Hungarian border open so that over 200,000 people could escape from communist tyranny, so please don't claim that I support the kind of ideology that he and they fought against. We don't know yet whether they were malicious and unfounded accusations, Ford makes that claim whenever he gets negative press and often is forced to backtrack.

The police were investigating this before the media got involved and prominent members of his staff quit over inside information they had access to.
