It's only a popular alternative among the poor and college students thinking that it will propel them into an equal equivalence to the middle class and knocking the rich down to the same level to pay for it. Cradle to grave politics will bankrupt any country, you need creativity and drive to succeed in this world to pay for the policy, by making everyone equal will stifle the initiative to succeed making more people dependent on Gov. handouts.

I find that humorous because socialism came about in the 1800's and certainly there were government functions and programs prior to the 1800s.

What is it down to now? I think it's 45% of the population paying all the bills on services in our countries I'd love to see a flat rate across the board tax so everyone pay their fair share of Gov. social services, that is only fair and not stifle the dream to succeed.
