As the market place sets the price of life, not the government. A basic income is completely useless unless you plan on having government also control and set what companies can charge for rent , food , electricity.

In the USA the government and its sub divisions do have a role in determining prices for utilities and for food with the latter due to Food Stamps. People forget that the primary beneficiaries of the Food Stamp program are farmers with most of the money going to them. The government has a similar role in business through the Investment Tax credit which (in theory) serve to encourage investment in domestically created products thereby stimulating commerce. Too bad the government has not gone further by creating similar credits on personal tax returns for people who buy domestic autos, appliances, and other products used in homes. This would surely go a long way towards stimulating domestic commerce.

This is something that must be implemented. A basic income would be a vaccine for the rampant poverty and crime so entrenched in our society today. We also need to confront the issue high unemployment as jobs become more and more obsolete with every technological advance. Here is a fact - there are not jobs for everyone! How would you remedy an issue of this magnitude? With a basic income.

So you want to pay people for doing nothing? That won't fly, as pretty soon everyone will be fighting over who gets to do nothing! :) :)

I wish I had enough money to buy you a plane ticket to go live there..... Permanently GoreObsessed
I thought a Canadian Pension check could be deposited in a bank in any country. For me it would be for the bar on the beaches of California after it is fully desert like Baja.
I assume salt water evaporated in a 'hot room' can be piped into come cooling coils so it came out as distilled water The salts should contain trace minerals and if that is like rock dust for plants it helps the dirt accept plants and water faster. You see sea salt in every corner store, this is just growing your own. Dry air @ sea level might help with a few breathing issues I have that show up above 1/2km in altitude. If that is a permanent high then even sea level air is at it's max pressure. Now if the water was in doldrum like conditions the coastal water and the bays would be glass smooth except for tides so customize the bottom and you have 20 ft rollers that curl just as the locals would like them to and that would draw in a few tourists that 'like to rough it' to be in a place where the water is too warm for sharks.

So you want to pay people for doing nothing?

it's not paying people to do nothing, it's giving a wage to everyone which ensures people can shelter and feed themselves. this alleviates some poverty, homelessness and crime.
people that assume that this will stop people from working are basically saying everyone only works for money and there's no enjoyment in it for them.

Depends on the degree of gvt regulation for option #2
The amount 'they' take home would be the dividing line. Above that level you start to pay taxes on the extra money available to drive the fastest cars and such. The guy with 20 Steam ships is doing that because that is what he wants to do and the money advantage help finance other ambitions that not all people have. Some are content on becoming experts in a single field with a single employee, themselves.

Most advancements come from [people who are doing 'hobbies' than the ones who show up at 8AM and leave at 4PM for the day. Hobbies also run cheaper in Admin costs so more hardware is available for the actual R&D

Radar and brakes are a dream, as a hobby it would be possible to develop that for an e-bike that lets the rider hold it wide open and the sensors would detect 'solid things' in the 20ft range that would cut the power before a crash. Turn the bars a bit and the path shows clear and power is restored that lets you travel at the set speed. For an e-bike it is 30kph. For a medi-scooter it is 12kph. There is even an acceleration meter that is super cheap so you could 'dial in' how fast it accelerates and how hard the brakes come on when in 'auto' mode.

I had to hire a guy after minimum wage was increased. It really hurt me financially, and if I could have paid him less, I would have done so.
Now I can't afford to trade in my 2015 Mercedes for the 2016 luxury model, and I'll have to settle for one with the standard package. Seriously, **** you guys for raising the minimum wage.

Who sets the price of living GoreObessess? 😉

The consumer sets the price. Once the price is to high , the consumer stops buying;)

If price of living is too high , Start making your own food and shelter. It's that simple.

Northern Ontario,
We already have a basic income for freeloaders in Canada. Called welfare.
Have you noticed that all those, in this forum who b-itch day after day after day about the economy, Harper, banks etc. etc, are those that are too damned lazy to work for a living, and want everything handed to them.................

Lazy people of Canada....unite....and vote for the Shiny Pony.....

Few more sticks and that bow in her back should be gone. Balance the load is the trick to a long and healthy back. Twins you carry like a pair of 6 shooters I imagine.

Without 'us' all you would have left is 'intelligent and reasonable people' and where would that leave you in terms of whose is teacher and who is slow student??
Without it 35,000 jobs nationwide would be lost and
$10 of your taxes go to support the whole welfare system. (admin as well as knuckle draggers)
$20 goes to the bank for interest alone
$50 goes to prop up the military when it hasn't fired a shot in anger in about 70 years. $10 goes to bribes and exotic vacations that the taxpayer should be taking.
Shall I go on?

One more little problem comes to mind. If I'm a widget maker earning $X and my neighbour does nothing earning $Y, then I am going to demand my wage of $X PLUS $Y for the time I spend doing nothing. :) :) :)
