It IS about your preferences, because you are the one with the issue. As pointed out, gays, bis, Trans people and so on have existed since pre-history. Your problem is you are confusing "common" with "normal".
Why is it offensive? Because you are saying gay people (and others) aren't normal.
You are saying gay people shouldn't have a right to exist.
By not being 'normal', gays et al are "other" and thus not worth as much.
And by this stupidity, you not only endanger adults, but children as well.
And THAT I have issue with.

We should stick the mentally ill into homes and lock them up because they're not 'normal'.
We should stop teaching history, because the history of X people isn't "normal" (depending on your heritage).
You CANNOT dictate normal when normal does not exist.
