I don't get what your probelem is? That someone finds his video enlightening in some way? What the hell do you care? Nobody even asked you what your opinion is, so if it doesn't interest you, why did you feel compelled to make a stink?

This is a forum. When you post a thread, you're inherently asking anyone what their opinion is. I figured this should be obvious for a Forum Leader, but apparently it isn't.

BS It indicates the stupidity in misusing gov't funding.

How is this a misuse?

That it is useless is only your opinion. Not a big deal.
But then even something more-or-less useless or irrleevant can have vast ramifications. You seem to forget that. Or maybe you just aren't aware of it.

I'm more than aware of the message this artist is trying to portray- it is much more than a blanket-face statement. I'm just trying to dispel such ridiculous claims because it is ridiculous. In almost every direction we have artists, who frankly have no relationship with reality making some point against humanity. Why we are damaging the earth. Why we are damaging ourselves. Why we are damaging life. It is really sickening at this point.http://forums.canadiancontent.net/members/tonington.html

You voiced your opinion that it is useless. All you've added since is whine.

How is this a misuse?
 Money could be spent on better things than nuclear bombs and testing them. Education and health, for instance.

 Then as long as it is sickening enough to cause people to fight against the stupidity, it isn't useless then, is it?
If some people find it merely interesting, it isn't useless then either, is it?

What exactly is whining? With exception with my last post where I've shown clear distaste for artists trying to be activists, all I've been doing is supporting why this information at face value gives no basis for what the artist is trying to say.

And we already have a plethora of our GDP invested in health/education. IIRC 16% of the American GDP is invested in Health, and trust me with Obama's new reform it's going to be much more than that. But this isn't about health and education, its about Nuclear Testing. Do you agree or not that America should invest in the military (in fact, a larger substantial percentage than other countries since it is a super power?).

You still haven't shown why it is stupid. You've explained that there are alternatives which are already invested in heavily. It does not take away at all the benefits of testing our own nuclear capacities.

AnnaG said:

It useless in the way that it cannot/does not support this artist's ultimate message. That nuclear bombs are going to be the cause of human extinction.

Nope. Why do we constantly need to spend billions upon billions on stuff the only use for is testing?

You still haven't shown why it is stupid. You've explained that there are alternatives which are already invested in heavily. It does not take away at all the benefits of testing our own nuclear capacities.

Are you positive that is the entire message? Are you sure that the bigger message isn't that we may drive ourselves to extinction through our development of destructive technology and pollution in general?

Instead of even bothering with this kind of MAD ideology, I'll just send you back to the 1980's where it was more popular, seeing as your politics are stuck in that time frame.

Which was why I said such information is useless. Its akin to stating the amount of houses sold per annum. Thanks but no thanks.

It is unfortunate that you are so limited in your imagination that you cannot understand an artistic and very clever illustration of the madness of the nuclear arms race. I expect you would probably have the same problem with Picasso's Guernica or Francisco Goya's images of the Peninsular War.

And what the hell do you know about my politics? And what does the 1980s have to do with this? The greatest park of the nuclear arms race occurred before the 1980s. You come across as a complete ignoramus. Find something worthwhile to comment on. If you don't you are going to draw a good deal of fire from those who find stupid comments offensive.

First of all for the past decade America has not conducted a single test on nuclear bombing. Secondly, we tested nuclear bombs because America had no choice against a growing super power who also gained hold of WMDs. You suggest America cut production and risk being out produced by the USSR?

Honestly what is the difference? I'm not trying to be precise in this artist's message, it's the general umbrella of his agenda I'm trying to address. It is a ridiculous notion, furthering why I dismissed his entire video on this basis.

BarSinister, learn to read context for the majority of my posts in this thread. It was Torrington and AnnaG who are pretending to play dumb with this artist's message.

What does the 1980's have to do with this? Are you oblivious as to why nuclear armaments were mass produced in the first place? The 1980's was a critical juncture to STOPPING the production of nuclear arms, because Reagan and Gorbachev signed an agreement to reduce both of their nuclear capacities by 50%. The entire ideology of America and Western society in the 1980's followed the MAD doctrine, which is akin to your philosophy as well. Next time when you go accusing someone of being an ignoramus, have a basic sense of history.

Yup, I said that, alright. If I hadn't you likely would still be fumbling with your initial simplistic POV.

lmao USA 1032 nukes up to 1998. That is more than all the other countries testings put together. After the USSR went kaput in 1991, what was the reason for more testing? The threat from the UK or France? lmao

So the artist's view that destructive technology and pollution is a ridiculous notion in your opinion. Well, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but I think that's a pretty pathetic attitude.

And yours wasn't simplistic? Lol...

Sigh... AnnaG can you not differentiate between a nuclear weapons test and a full blown nuclear bomb? Yes, those stupid Americans rounded 1000+ 15MT nuclear bombs just for the flashy light shows. Obviously technological development or analysis of the blast wave wouldn't warrant testing. No, on a serious note, majority of these tests were done in small quantities which were projected on scale models.

And secondly, America promptly stopped nuclear testing in 1992, so where are you getting your assertions from?

AnnaG said:

What is ridiculous is voicing such an opinion at a time where two super powers were engaged in an arms race. What is ridiculous is grouping free nations like America, with despotic nations like the USSR. What is ridiculous is proposing that this will lead to the extinction of the human race. A lot of things regarding this "art" is ridiculous.

How am I playing dumb with it?

"What is the artist trying to say?"

Sorry, but in the light of the original post your comment makes absolutely no sense. The entire idea of the video was to illustrate the stupidity of the nuclear arms race. This is a point you seem to have completely missed. The treaties signed by Reagan and Gorbachev ended the race between the superpowers to a certain extent, but they really have nothing to do with the message of the video except as a reaction to what it shows.

And where in my posts did I support MAD? You are reading into my posts what you want to see, not what is there. Read them again and you will see that every post I made in this thread is in opposition to the nuclear arms race.

As for knowledge of history I suspect you have a very long way to go to catch up to me, given that you are incapable of correctly interpreting a simple historical video.

I could as well list things that are stupid:

  • We have to breathe.
  • We have to work.
  • We have to eat daily.
  • We have to pay taxes for public facilities.
What I'm ultimately getting at, is that some things are unavoidable. Stupid? Sure, but if you want to run a country and allow a despotic nation to out produce you in WMD's because you think its "stupid", good luck keeping that country.

This is a point you seem to have completely missed. The treaties signed by Reagan and Gorbachev ended the race between the superpowers to a certain extent, but they really have nothing to do with the message of the video except as a reaction to what it shows.
Again the video shows nothing. No actual fact regarding the power within each test. No fact regarding to the money invested in Nuclear testing. No actual fact regarding the potential deaths with the collective nukes each country owned. Just a number. A blank-faced number which ultimately says nothing.

What would be nice, is if the video illustrated the reasons WHY an arms race occured, but that would fly in the face of an agenda. Just show how America had tested more nuclear reactions than any other country, and you're point is made.
And where in my posts did I support MAD? You are reading into my posts what you want to see, not what is there. Read them again and you will see that every post I made in this thread is in opposition to the nuclear arms race.
If you knew history, you'd know MAD doctrines were created in opposition to the arms race as well...

As for knowledge of history I suspect you have a very long way to go to catch up to me, given that you are incapable of correctly interpreting a simple historical video.
Lmao I love this.

I am sorry, but your posts are becoming more and more incoherent. What does the little list at the beginning of your post have to do with the original thread? It appears to me that you have completely missed the point of the thread and are getting farther and farther off-topic all of the time. You are complaining about a lack of detail in a nine minute video. If you read my original post I recommended watching Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie. It is over two hours long and provides lots of detail. It may also help you to understand Mutually Assured Destruction, a concept you have quoted several times but do not seem to understand.
