[rant, personal bias] Well done Brent Haydon for reaching the Finals in the 100M Free. Along with Ryan Cochrane in the 1500M, they might be the only Swimming Finals we reach in these Olympics (although there are some other possibilities). Canada was never been a top swimming nation but we used to be solidly into the second rank.. and expect medals and the occasional Gold at big meets.. now we're having trouble making Finals.

What's more we are getting shut out of the Relays as well, IM and Free Style.. which are a real measure of the depth of your program. Canadian Swimming has to be re-thought.. we should be able to compete with GBR, France, South Africa, Italy.. if not the USA, Russia and China.. In fact we should be able to compete with Australia.. even with their swimming tradition.

I mean if the Canadian Women's Gymnastic team (kudos to them) can place 5th behind perennial powerhouses Russia, USA, China, Romania.. then we should be able to float a competitive Swimming team.. from the land of a million lakes.. we seem to do fine in Rowing (especially the 8s) as well. even though it was generous to give up his spot for his friend/teammate in the last Olympics, I still think it was a mistake to have given up a possible world record of 9 gold medals.

When I think of the Olympics I think of Beach Volleyball. NOT.
Kreskin - why not?

As for me, today I watched synchro diving - at least the girls were wearing something unlike the mens divers who were practically naked.

Also enjoyed watching the Fabulous Five win in gymnastics. Belgium-Korea tied at 0-0 in field hockey (in England it is called hockey whereas NHL is referred to as ice hockey). And watched a little weight lifting & foil fencing - this is probably my favorite form of fencing as it is very aggressive.

... and watched just a bit of swimming as well.

The US has golds in men's and women's shooting. What are the chances? ;)

they shouldn't be able to compete in that sport, unfair advantage. lol

congtats on another bronze, also a silver.

GO CANADA GO
The events are a little suspect. How many other countries can practice shooting AK47's out of a Dodge Dart?

Well done to the Canadian Men's 8s.8 Oars seems to be the one event that Canada almost always out performs its expectations. The Men are the defending Gold Medalists, one of several Gold's over the last few Olympics, and little was expected from this team as virtually the entire Crew retired after 2008.

I think success in Olympic Sports has something to do with the national temperament.. and this one seems to fit us to a tee.. a bit below the radar.. but one of the oldest and most prestigious and demanding in the Olympics. That final charge was one of the best moments in the Olympics.. pure pain in motion.

Tomorrow... the Women go head to head against the U.S. Crew.. a team that hasn't lost in 6 years.. and Canada is aiming to exceed expectations there as well. Go Girls!!

As for Michael Phelps.. well. congrats. I actually like the guy.. he's personable and accessible.. and quite down to earth, all this hasn't gone to head. But 19 medals.. 15 golds at this posting.. is SO AMERICAN. I can't imagine a Canadian would even conceive of that as an ambition.. even if it was in any way attainable. I'm sure a lot might like an individual AND relay gold medal.. but 19.. i mean that's so out there into American Lala-Land.

I'm so happy i've got an alternative to NBC, the SCRIPT.. loaded with hyperbole.. and pathos.. and drenched in sentiment and American style self absorbed, over the top chauvinism.. especially when dealing with Michael Phelps or Women's Gymnastics Team.. is beyond suffocating. Plus i actually get to watch things live.

Congrats to Brent Haydon on Bronze in the 100M Free.

I can't wait to see Simon Whitfield one last time, he has been spectacular over the past two Olympics in the triathlon.
