The Toronto Transit Commission is adopting new drug-testing measures, but it has backed away from the most controversial proposal — random testing.
TTC general manager Gary Webster told the commission on Thursday that the measures, which will go into effect in a year, are necessary to ensure continued safety on buses and subways.
The union representing TTC workers was quick to attack the plan, calling it "a shameless attempt by senior management to deflect attention away from their incompetence when it comes to protecting our members' health and safety."
After a year of reviewing its employee drug and alcohol policies, the TTC concluded there was an unacceptable risk on the system, and it wasn't doing enough to deter drug and alcohol use among employees.

In the transport industry, anyone operating a unit insured over 26,000lbs is drug tested
annually AND is entered into a random pool so they can be retested at any time. I'm
actually surprised that drug testing for transit buses and subway operators isn't already
compulsory. When you think the average class 8 tractor (the size of highway unit you
see most often) is about 16,000lbs and an empty trailer is 8000lbs to 12,000lbs....that
rule pretty much takes in every trucker. The ones entering the USA anyway.

Seems kind of backwards that the guys hauling auto parts have to be in the random drug
testing pool, but the guys hauling people don't.

Ahh,,,,,,sorry, but alcohol is not illegal........

Niether are the thousands of prescription drugs which constitute the real drug problem in the western world. This whole American drug testing programe is completely useless it's not designed to address anything, it's only purpose is to float the appearance of addressing the drug problem when in fact it completely ignors the real drug problem. The war on drugs is phoney and always was. Guess how drugs get to the western markets, I mean the ones that I don't grow.
