Jail time? I can't really see it.

If hunting that close to houses is legal, then it will likely be looked at as unsafe use of a firearm and there's not much way to prove it wasn't. Plus the guy turned himself in.

He might see a few weekends in jail, seizure of his guns if there's a legal ground for that, and some community service.

It wasn't the puppy that was stupid. Mistaking a little white puppy for a deer or a quail? I've never seen any little white deer or little white quail...........At least not at this latitude.......

Everyone knows law abiding gun owners would never shoot at something unless they had a good line of sight and knew what they were shooting at.

Oh yeah, this guy is some two bit criminal now and not a typical representative of those gun nuts that claim to be law abiding.

Police are seeking charges for careless use of a firearm and endangering an animal.

Not to mention his name is now public, and tell me that someone won't kick his ass if given an opportunity.

On Gabriola, another one of the Gulf Islands, about seven years ago, my neighbor was walking his dog. The dog ran on ahead, and my neighbor heard a shot and he never saw his dog again. One might wonder if this other event was related

I doubt it. I'm betting shooting a dog running at you on a trail is fairly common (as in one or two a year). Not everyone's dogs are well behaved, and some come across as aggressive.

This was obviously a "hit"
The puppy was known to police.
An Informer.
A small time player.
He cut the dope on the last deal.
Then he went too far by having an affair with the police Chief's babe.
Everybody wanted him dead.

I thought you said the problem was the act of hunting, not the quality of meat?

Even still, We can each have our own tastes. I prefer to eat hunted meat, or failing that I try and get it from one of my families farms.

But Im not a saint and I still get the cheap sanitized meat as often as not, logistics over animal empathy.

Zzarchov , there's some pretty good bear hunting down here, saw a video of a bear kill last night, shot from a perch with a twelve gauge slug, dropped like a bag of wet kittens.

Why is this dearly departed puppys life being disected here, I think we should give the family the courtesy of a little distance, this must be very trying to discover your puppys dead because of bad drug deals.

Jack Russells especially! They go right for the jugular and will travel in packs too.

I don't think so. We're talking about a little white puppy being aggressive? My friend on Gabriola had a young Cocker Spaniel. Hardly dogs to warrant shooting. The shooter was an idiot.

Poor kid. I hope someone gets him a new pup. Preferably a purebred wolf who hides in the bush waiting for those two a-holes.

Ok people, reality check here.

These aren't two guys who hunted the dog down and tortured it.

These are two guys out hunting who had a hunting accident and shot a dog. And we really don't know what happened, its entirely possible the animal was running through tall grass or bushes in the same spot their target was moving too.

Its entirely possible they are just incompetant and didn't see the dog when they fired shots at a bottle on a fencepost.

We don't have any evidence of any malice. Yes its tragic, it was tragic when my dog (albeit not a puppy) got run over as a child.

It doesn't mean the driver should have been murdered, it doesn't mean he should have gotten life in prison, or we needed tougher anti-cruelty laws or that we should ban all cars.

It means an accident happened and my dog died. Maybe someone was being an idiot, maybe they weren't as careful as they should have been. Im not saying no penalty or punishment,

but lets keep it in perspective. The guy turned himself in, Im sure he isn't feeling too great about the situation himself, shooting a lil puppy.

Incompetent to say the least. There is no possible excuse if the guy is a legit hunter. If you don't have a clear sight on what you are shooting and know what it is, instead of thinking what it might be, then you don't take the shot. That he fled the scene and later turned himself in makes me think he or they were drinking/intoxicated when it happened.

No matter how you slice it, it's a clear case of the so called responsible gun owner acting irresponsibly. I don't think he should go to jail for ever either. But this twit should not be allowed near another gun. There could have been a kid with that little dog.

As well three more shootings in Toronto yesterday. Time to get rid of hand guns nation wide and put a lock down on the boarder to prevent hand guns from entering the country. I don't consider someones hobby to be of more importance than someones life.
