Does Interest Relate to Caring?

In relation to the previous thread of "Why Care?" I figured I would delve into a paticular aspect of that topic.

Many have said that one must care about something, such as visiting these forums and replying to certain topics, or arguing one side of an argument, or they wouldn't be here in the first place.

But that doesn't necessarily mean someone cares about something, that only expresses interest. Just because someone is interested in something, doesn't actually mean that they care one way or another what happens to that something in the end..... Does it?

Well, that all depends on how you use the word interest. English is so highly semantical. Since you said : "..that only expresses interest...". The use of the word 'only' implies that your take on that word, in that particular sentence, is of some pastime. Something that probably 'only' occupies your time when you have nothing better to do. While other posters here probably are interested in another meaning of the word interest. Like showing concern and curiosity.

If you want to discuss the relation between interest and caring, then you have to define the parameters a little better ;)

I'm not a linguistics expert, I just understand how there can be confusion over words meanings.

No I don't, you just have to stop trying to look too deep into what is being said.... sometimes it's as simple as it is seen:

In relation to the previous thread of "Why Care?" I figured I would delve into a paticular aspect of that topic.

^ I wish to focus on a paticular part of what validates "Caring."

Many have said that one must care about something, such as visiting these forums and replying to certain topics, or arguing one side of an argument, or they wouldn't be here in the first place.

^ As an example of what was previously expressed in one or two opinions on what it means to be caring of something. You can feel free to make up your own examples of if this is true or not. This was a generic example to get the ball and minds rolling.

But that doesn't necessarily mean someone cares about something, that only expresses interest. Just because someone is interested in something, doesn't actually mean that they care one way or another what happens to that something in the end..... Does it?

^ The main objective of the topic and what I would wish to focus on besides just why care... is whether or not what you are interested in, brings you through the same paths in life as if you would care for it's well being.

I just figured I would reduce the amount of words I used to explain the situation being presented, as I kinda figured it was already explained itself and the parameters of the discussion for most people.

Yes I am aware there is such a thing as being interested in a girl in a bar..... because you care about getting laid that night.... but that's not what I am talking about.

I'm talking about absolute. Present your opinion on whether or not you agree that Interest can or can not bring you to the same outcomes in life then caring for that thing you are interested in...... and after that, perhaps present an example to back up your opinion.

And then we can go from there.

Hopefully that explains things better for you.

Well, in that case, given the definitions of the word interest, I would say that, yes, interest can bring you to the same outcomes in life that caring for something does. Because, like I mentioned in not so few words, caring is synonymous with interest.

So as an example. I am interested in atmospheric physics for example (one of many other disciplines), in that it is of importance and consequence to me. It's the same thing as my caring for of the environment. They both lead me towards the same places, towards the same contextual situations.

The more interesting question is an age old question.

Chicken, or the egg?

Fair enough.

Oh, and the Egg.
